Redact My Spoiler January 26, 2005 11:57 PM Subscribe
My plot spoiler in skallas' AskMe thread wouldn't have been so bad if it were in ROT-13. It was just my luck that I didn't stop to consider it at the time. I'd like to plea Mea culpa, and request my comment be pbeerpgrq jvgu nyy gung hygen-frperg, rapelcgvpny glcr ubbqbb, if possible.
Do you mean this comment? And if so, which part? the short answer and last sentence?

Just the "Long Answer". The last sentence is fine.

So wipe out three paragraphs to replace with the single sentence of gibberish code?

Like I said before, some sort of hidden tag (where text is the same color as the background) would be a preferred solution, but Rot13 is a good workaround.

Doesn't the thread ask for spoilers? What's the problem?

Is there something you're using to make rot13 not a pain in the ass?

I thought the trouble with that thread was the issues of including spoilers in the post, not in the comments?

The Mnenhy Extension for Firefox also has it covered.
It even does BASE64, Morse signal, and Unicode.
nthdegx & redfoxtail - it's a matter of wether people viewing the initial question think the heavy spoilers are decoded or not. It's common nettiquette within USENET and bulletin board threads to scramble the text, so that anyone else with a related question can post within the thread, without fear of acquiring too many juicy details. Since MeFi/MeTa never had any incident involving spoilers, I neglected to think about it. But the popularity of AskMe is likely to encourage more discretion.

Smart Dalek: Redfoxtail is right, you didn't do anything wrong. The post asked for an answer which would naturally include spoilers, so anyone reading the thread should have expected them. The problem was the spoilers in the post itself.
ROT-13 would have been courteous, but wasn't necessarily expected.
