How to say "thanks Ask MetaFilter"
I recently asked a question and and amazed with the help I recieved. Should I just smile, post in the thread (but who would see it?) or email individual posters? Or just shut up?

Thank them in the thread. They'll appreciate your appreciation, and your consideration will be noted by the community as an indication of your personality.

I check back in the threads if it's a question that interested me. So they might read it.
Anyway, your "thank you" is an endorsement of some answer(s), so it's a good reference for future users.

A poster sent out an e-mail thanking everyone who helped him answer his problem, and giving us a link to a blog which would keep us up to date on his situation. Pretty neat if you ask me(fi).

Oh, never say thank you. We don't do that round here.
Just kidding. I'd say, post a brief comment in the thread (that way readers get an idea of what kind of answers are helpful and what makes a good thread) and e-mail them personally if you want to send a more detailed thank you.

A thank you in the thread also lets people know you no longer need help. I often browse the 2-4 week old questions so don't dispair that no one will see a reply just because the post has fallen off the front page.

I think you should e-mail the most helpful of dudes (or dudettes as the case may be). they may get a kick out of it!

I've always appreciated a "thank you" in the original question, in fact, I think it's rather rude to say nothing after a bunch of people have typed their little hearts out just for you.

Oh goodnewsfortheinsane, I'd finally forgotten your unforgivable faux pas when you have to dredge it back up again! Keep quiet. Organisational memory is a strange thing, and if you pretend like it never happened, people will forget.
So long as a 'nevar forget 11/12/2004' meme isn't added to the long list of dates I already have to remember and mark with a '.' on my calendar.

Oh right cosmonik, because you have been a member for what - oh yeah, a day longer than me?
