Finding it sad that the best answer to this AskMe is the OP's vitriolic 'karma is going to get you' retort to another poster.

He reminds me of a bidder I once got on eBay. I listed an item. In the last 12 hours before the auction's end - when it's too late to end a listing early - said item suffered an accident, so I had to start canceling bids. But this one bidder kept re-bidding, even after I had messaged him and explained what was up. So, he wins the auction and asks me for payment information. I tell him - again - as nicely as possible that the item is broken.
Bidder responds by telling me karma is going to get me if he doesn't first.
Dude seriously wanted that sewing machine.

To me the problem (and why I didn't comment in the thread), was that in my experience, ebay doesn't cancel your account for one unpaid item (I've paid all of mine, but I've seen plenty of bidders with unpaid item claims in their feedback that were still bidding or selling).
Since it didn't wash with many members experience of how ebay works, it was hard not to think there's more to the situation that we don't know about.
It sort of sounds like the poster can't access ebay at all, which might be more that the poster is currently in an area known for ebay scamming, and ebay has blocked that IP block or something, or Hotmail is fucking with 'em.

I agree, watercarrier probably just needs to cool out a little bit. Some people go into "Berserk Customer Freakout Mode" when something bad like this happens. That's one of the reasons why working customer service lines sucks so much.

This isn't really true. He actually has a history of asking questions where he understands the subject so poorly that he can't formulate a good question, and then getting snippy when people try to help him clarify his intentions. See his "herbs" question, and his "mind energy DNA" question. The latter reads like a troll it's so loony. Since he's only asked 7 questions, including the deleted one from today, he doesn't have a very good batting average. Yeah, he's been thankful, or at least not commented, in several of his questions, but it's actually just as likely that the behavior he exhibited today is his normal behavior.

I didn't want to call the first one out because I'd feel like a grinch: aww, the sweet newlyweds want nice stories, how cute, who am I to piss on their honeymoon. Entirely irrelevant, but there's way too much chatfilter on AskMe these days: 1, 2, 3. I didn't want to call the first one out because I'd feel like a grinch: aww, the sweet newlyweds want nice stories, how cute, who am I to piss on their honeymoon. But "what have you read or seen lately that has changed your mind?" "If you could move to any place in the world where would you go to and why?" IF YOU WERE A TREE WHAT KIND OF TREE WOULD YOU BE AMIRITE? Bah humbug.
Just flag 'em, that's what I do. There's also an old MetaTalk post about it.

Wow - to me this is an example of how this site gets all out of control sometimes. I felt his exasperation and understood it - he was getting answers he specifically asked not to get - once I can understand, but it was a total pile-on. Now, of course he didn't help his situation by being snippy but I'm a little taken aback at how gleeful people are here about how poorly he handled things. And I thought AskMe was about a bit more kindness than that.
Here's hoping he gets his (potentially scary, if it involves ID theft) problem resolved.

Well, to be fair: in the AskMe thread, I saw more shock and skepticism and frustration at his stubbornness/defensiveness than anything like gleeful mockery. Metatalk is its own wild land, and that (and the sense of distance -- commentary thread vs. askme thread) has a lot to do with the snarkiness in here, I think.

Didn't he ask how to contact someone at eBay and explain to them what happened, for which he was given phone numbers and e-mail addresses, in response to which he flailed like a muppet? I don't think there was a response to his question that would have satisfied him short of eBay itself rising up from the abyss and prostrating itself before him.

The answers given where legit answers, and the asking after additional info was also legit, his hyper-defensiveness and willful ignoring of assistance being offered resulted in a predictable fashion. Kindness is default position, not an absolute. If you act pissy your going to get pissed on. And the reason it doesn't stop with just ONE person responding is he is reacting to a community, which reacts back.

Easy - someone on ebay advertised twin mefi accounts to ask and answer your own question with. Then the seller said they actually only had 1 account to get rowdy with. Well the poster already had that. But out of respect for the site, offered to pay.
The confusion happened when the seller advertised it as "duel metafilter account". Pretty simple, really.

I feel party responsible for the AskMe screw up. Usually we make a point to not delete follow-ups from the OP even if they veer off-topic or are jokey and/or otherwise violate rules of AskMe.
The general guideline is that even though the question is open to everyone, it's still the OP's prerogative to try to explain themselves and/or their issue. In this case, even when the OP was clearly getting a little heated and/or inappropriately pissy with people (to my read) I felt like it was a better idea to try to let him work it out and figure it out and not go in and remove some of the insulting or confusing things that he said. I think closing the thread was probably the right idea, but it would have been nice if one of us could have stepped in and maybe calmed things down some to figure out what the hell the guy was even talking about.

For the sake of beating a dead horse and general pointlessness, here is my blow-by-blow summarization of this debacle:
OP asks "My account was canceled for a non-payment. How do I contact someone at ebay and explain my situation?".
Someone posts phone numbers.
Someone posts an email address.
Someone posts a way to chat with eBay.
OP says he can't call because he's out of the country.
Someone says that eBay doesn't cancel accounts for this kind of thing, so there must be something else going on.
OP says there is absolutely nothing else going on.
Two people say that calling really is the best option, even if it has to be long distance.
Someone says that the OPs actions could easily be misinterpreted as a scam.
Someone else re-iterates that eBay does not cancel accounts for one non-payment, and that he should contact eBay to get it straightened out.
OP re-iterates that "nothing else is going on" and that he only wants ways to contact eBay via email.
OP says that eBay did indeed cancel his account after one non-payment.
OP says that he can't contact customer support because he only has email access.
OP says that could not in fact be misinterpreted as a scam.
Someone suggests calling customer service.
Someone offers email addresses for eBay and PayPal and suggests that the OP open a new account.
Someone suggests that there could be some sort of misunderstanding, and that not being able to login doesn't necessarily mean that an account has been suspended.
Someone suggests that the OP is not being very receptive to the answers being given.
Someone says that calling customer service is the best option even if it's expensive.
Someone says that even if your account is suspended for non-payment the OP should be able to log in.
OP says that he can't login, and that he tried to set up a new account but that one was suspended too. He also tells people to stop responding if they don't have a way to resolve the issue via email.
OP posts some negative comments from another forum saying that eBay support sucks.
Someone suggests that the thread will soon be closed.
Someone says that resolving the issue via email is impossible, and the only way to get support is via phone.
OP says that the people answering don't know what they are talking about and that they are giving misinformation.
Someone says that the OP is jumping to conclusions and is being abrasive and hostile.
Someone posts several corporate eBay email addresses.
OP says that the phone numbers given do not go to a human, and are therefore useless. He thanks everyone for their help.
*OP tells one of the answerers that his gloating and judging will be answered with retribution.*

From the "Matter Changing DNA thread"
While the study that Targ was working on when she died, about "distance healing" (sic) and brain cancer has finished, there don't seem to be any results published. However, on this page, almost at the very bottom, there is a listing for a talk from Andrew Freinkel who took over as PI, called, "No Effect of Anonymous Distant Healing on Survival Time for Patients With Glioblastoma Multiforme". So I guess it matters a lot more whether or not the study is manipulated than it does whether or not you're prayed for.
This is so funny. I actually work in a lab with Dr. Freinkel and ran into him in the elevator this morning and told him I saw his name on the internet. He confirmed that the good studies on distance healing show no statistical significance between the two groups, and the ones that do show statistical significance make use of "bullshit cherry-picking" (I believe that's a scientific term.). He also said that not only do the wacko distance healers truly believe they are healing people from a distance, but they actually (in his opinion) meet criteria for a new non-DSM-documented disorder that he called "delusional altruism."
He's also probably the only person in America who received a vial of salvia divinorum from his Secret Santa. (It wasn't me.)

Congratulations: you're the guy selling remaindered UFO books at Burning Man.
Congratulations, you're the guy who uses Burning Man as a cliche without knowing thing 1 about it.
You can't sell anything there.

This is in response to what went down here yesterday when I made the huge mistake in bringing this problem to Meta. But there was one person who provided me with an actual email - to whom I sent the letter - thank you
and a fast flurry of emails were then sent to me by ebay - and this is the explanation I received from them:
Dear xxx,
Thank you for writing eBay in regard to accessing your account.
Your account is not suspended. I reviewed your account and found that it
was accessed by an unauthorized person. Your eBay password was no longer
secure. As a result, we reset your password to prevent unauthorized
activity on your account.
This process assures us that you will have sole control of the account
once again. While we can't disclose the details of our research that led
us to take this action, we hope you feel confident that we acted in your
best interest.
You should have received a separate email with your temporary password
and instructions on how to choose a new password.
***Note***
If you didn't get the email, the spam filters on your email account
might be preventing it from getting to your Inbox. Your email service
provider will be able to help you bypass the filters.
To change your password yourself, please follow these steps:
1. Click the "site map" link located at the top of most eBay pages. You
may be asked to sign in.
2. Click the "Forgot Your Password" link located under the "My Account"
heading.
3. Enter your User ID, and click the "Continue" button.
4. Answer at least one of the questions, and click the "Continue"
button.
We will send you an email with instructions for completing your password
change. This e-mail will be entitled "Forgotten Password" and will
contain a link for you to create a new password.
5. Copy and paste, or type, the link into your browser's address bar.
***Do not click this link.***
6. Enter your User ID, and click the "Continue" button.
7. Enter your new password twice, and click the "Submit Changes" button.
After you complete the password change process, you'll see the following
message on your My eBay page: "Your changes have been saved." We'll also
send you a confirmation email.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
xxxx

I then sent them a letter telling them that I NEVER received any kind of notification from them about this - and the potential threat to my account - and most importantly how to ACCESS the account - meanwhile I was thinking it all had to do with the $10.00 auction and being suspended - which it turns out I was not - and they sent me this:
Dear xx,
Thank you for writing eBay in regard to the difficulty you have had in
accessing your account.
I can assure you we have sent you an email regarding the action we had
taken on your account. When a person isn't receiving email, it's often
because a spam filter prevents the messages from reaching the inbox.
Spam filters are designed to keep spam (unwanted, junk email) out of
your inbox. Unfortunately, in its attempt to protect you from spam, the
spam filter may also delete email that you consider important.
It's possible that these messages are being redirected to another folder
with a name like "bulk." The spam filter could also delete the messages
or block them completely.
Usually there's a way to adjust the settings on your spam filter to
prevent unwanted mail from getting to you while still allowing emails
that you *want* to reach you. To learn how to adjust your spam settings,
please consult the Help files of your email program.
I have reviewed your account and it appears that you were able to change
your password and regain access to your account after you sent this
email.
If you are still having difficulties accessing your account, here are
the steps to change your password again:
1. Click the "Sign in" link located at the top of most eBay pages.
2. Click the "Forgot your password?" link located under the Password
box.
3. Enter your User ID, and click the "Continue" button.
4. Answer at least one of the questions, and click the "Continue"
button.
We will send you an email with instructions for completing your password
change. This e-mail will be entitled "Forgotten Password" and will
contain a link for you to create a new password. Once you receive this
email:
1. Copy and paste, or type, the link in the email into your Web
browser's address bar. ***Do not click this link.***
2. Enter your User ID, and click the "Continue" button.
3. Enter your new password twice, and click the "Submit Changes" button.
If you still continue to have any further difficulties, please contact
our Account Theft Live Help team. By contacting the Live Help team, we
will be able to quickly resolve any remaining issues related to your
account and discuss any additional questions or concerns that you may

Which is utter BS - never received anything from them and my email doesn't have any filters - I keep getting ebay spam fine. It was their screw up on all levels.
Now as for those who judged me on this - yes, it's your karma for not giving me the benefit of the doubt when I told you what went down. I don't need people's judgments on do I have money to make calls, *there's more to this* - or whatever. That's all. You have and had no way of knowing what transpired yet you ASSUMED that this was some kind of scam. Whatever. I made a huge error in judgment myself in approaching total strangers with a matter of this importance. It won't happen again. If I ever need a question answered I'll make sure it only entails minutia and trivia stuff that don't deal with my livlihood.
Thanks to those who DID respond humanely and accurately.
End.

watercarrier, people were assuming that there was something—neutral, inclusive meaning here—additional to the situation that would explain why this thing that shouldn't happen did happen. Folks talked about how your behavior could be perceived by ebay to be a scam, regardless of your innocence of same.
As it turned out, according to ebay, something else was up. You reacted really, really negatively to people trying to help you explore what was, on the surface, not a self-consistent occurance.
Bringing a question to the table when you're really, really emotionally invested in it is something you need to do with care, so that you don't badly muck up the dynamic of the thread. Your frustration at not getting precisely the answers you wanted to get doesn't really excuse your lousy reaction to the answerers, as understandable as your distress about the ebay situation may be.

I'm glad to hear that the Ebay situation was resolved. There were three people who provided email addresses -- it would be nice to know which was the right one.

Do you want to discuss any of this further? If not, it's probably best that we close this thread.
