NY Meet-Ups

Hello!

I'm new to NYC (4 month anniversary coming up) and now that the whole mess of moving and settling is finally done with, I am starting to realize that I don't know very many people here and I would like that to change. Things are starting to get pretty lonely.

I see postings for meet-ups that have already happened, but where do I look to find meet-ups that are being planned?

What are other ways that have proved successful for you all to meet new people? I'm relatively shy at first and I work long hours and often 6 or 7 days a week so it's very hard to get outside of my work environment. I work with great people, but I don't always want to hang out with them after being together all day.

Help!

Happy New Year! :)

Over in the metatalk sidebar under "Upcoming Meetups:". They're always up for meet-ups so that shouldn't be a problem.

well, when are you free?

if you want to meetup, it's good to just pick a time and a place. or else mention that there is free booze/food some place. that always works for me.

If you're looking for a meetup to be planned, you should go ahead and plan one! Make a post announcing a date, time, and location. If you need help with planning, you could MeMail me, or another NYC Mefite you'd like to meet up with. When you are the one who wants a meetup, it's best to do all the planning before announcing it- "Whaddyawannado?" threads don't tend to go very well.

I'm a freelancer, so my free time is inconsistent. I'll work a bazillion hours with a company for two or three weeks and then I'll have anywhere from a few days to a few weeks without work.

How far in advance do you know when you'll be free? Meetups with at least 1 and preferably 2-3 weeks notice are best, but people have thrown things together with less time, especially if there's a big event going on people want to go to (a concert or something).

Well, if you have any used books to get rid of, come to 12th & Broadway between 9:30 am and 6:00pm, tuesday through saturday. unless I'm on lunch break (2:30 to 3:30), I'll be the guy unpacking. I'm kind of unique looking and hard to miss.

True. jonmc is seven and a half feet tall, weighs 113 pounds, has green hair down to his waist and a long pink handlebar mustache.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 8:17 PM on January 1, 2008

That's absurd. The mustache is magenta, not pink.

Puce, dammit. and you forgot the pierced forehead and impish grin.

Oh heavens yes, speaking from experience, you do not want to wander in there and start talking to the guy with the pink moustache. Srsly.

I'm a big fan of the 2:30 lunch too! I'd come to an NYC meetup, but I'm scared of getting NYC beat up.

What are you, Tex, a Godzilla magnet? Or are you one of those Texas hayriders who're afraid of the subways?

Yes... and yes.

I'm available for coffee on short notice. I'll meet anyone at least once.

"people have thrown things together with less time"

Impromptu meetup, tonight. In my pants.

Unfortunately, my pants are not in NYC tonight. It is rumored my pants will be in NYC sometime in the next 2 weeks, and I will almost certainly be in them, partying. You're welcome to join me; just follow the oontz oontz until you reach the fly. Knock twice, sharply, for admittance. If you knock too many or too few times, I can't guarantee the bouncer will let you in. They're kinda strict about passcodes. In my pants.

No way. That's a bad neighborhood. Full of nuts and assholes.

I'm not new to NYC, but I'm new to MeFi.

So if I have to share this site with allayouz, I damn sure want to meet you all so I know which ones I can take in a fight.

This is the thread that I will show to everyone when I explain why I don't live in New York.

Let's go to Clinton Street Baking Company. And then a bar.

Clinton St. Baking Co. makes excellent food.

i've seen a guy matching this description barrelling down 5th ave on a bike. I fervently hope he's on metafilter.

Is it actually possible to get a bunch of New Yorkers with dissimilar schedules to meet in one place, then to pick up and go to another place?

I mean, there's herding cats, and then there's teaching 'em line dancing.
posted by The Pluto Gangsta at 11:12 AM on January 4, 2008

... have you been to one of our meetups? We do this every time.
posted by spec80 at 11:34 AM on January 4, 2008

Hey I should scroll up. Yes. It is possible. And if I had a cat, it could herd and be herded. And it would be able to line dance. And then I'd shoot it full of coke and it would write the Next Great American Novel. My cat is Michael Chabon. Who is not a New Yorker. But you weren't talking about New York cats. Just cats. So my argument is still solid.

My cat is a new york cat.

She wakes me up at 6 am to be fed. She eats two bites and is then full. She then goes and cuddles up with my roommate in another room.

When I finally leave for work, she's sleeping on a couch in the room with the bunny and looks slightly hurt when I wake her up to say goodbye.

le sigh.
