Just curious why yet another Ask Metafilter answer was immediately deleted with no email explanation. Thanks.
Well, for one thing, I suspect that the fact that you don't have an email address in your profile presented a bit of an obstacle for the mods.

I've never been emailed when a comment was deleted. Is that something we should expect? On the other hand - while I understand the impulse to delete answers that are off topic, it seems like a bad idea to me to delete answers simply because someone (or even everyone) thinks they're wrong. Seems against the spirit of the site, somehow.

I'd say most deleted comments in AskMe don't get an email; by the same token, most deleted comments are usually either jokes or out of line for the site. If something's really tricky or contentious, we might send an email, and I'll sometimes write to a very new user on the assumption that they might not know what's up. I don't know what Jess's comment-deletion notification practices are like by comparison.
Nuking this exchange gave me a little pause specifically because of what IRFH just said—being wrong isn't precisely against the rules, and can be instructive. But being apparently dead wrong on a fairly specific issue in a way that leads to a cascade of one-note responses in lieu of actual useful answers is genuinely damaging to the thread, and it seemed better to just cull it and avoid a pile-on.

I thought it was only after exhibiting a pattern of jerkiness, generally precipitated by little to no outside positive social interaction, that you get an email that says something like, "Knock it off, jerkface, or be banned."
I mean, that's what I've heard. From people.

It was just the wrong store. If you can read offense in that, you're the fattist, obviously.
As a matter of fact, tops at Lane Bryant would totally be worth a shot for some size 10/12s with big racks in the market for modest workwear. I've always swam in all their tops, even at a pants size 16. Very chesty cuts.

As the OP, I didn't take it as snark so much as someone who thought genuinely that a tall girl who wore double digits must be fat, so he rattled off the "fat girls" store name he knew. Now granted, I thought I might be wrong and they had clothes that might fit, so I went and real big on the top of the web page it says "14w" which of course is much bigger than a 14 everywhere else.

Yeah, I've taken to doing that sometimes as well; I didn't in this case because it wasn't so much a case of a fundamental issue of the question that was likely to keep popping up (unlike, say, a comparative religion flamefest springing up in a biblical interpretation question). With four panel's comment and the immediate rebuttals gone, it didn't seem likely that Lane Bryant was going to recur as a hot-button issue in the thread.

I'm those specs (well, depends on the store) and I'm not a fat ass. So, uh, maybe you should keep your downers to yourself.

I don't think that there *is* a greasemonkey thing that shows deleted comments, is there?
As far as I'm aware, no. I don't even know how that would work.

I have a greasemonkey script that reads deleted foo before you write it, filters out any bitter or unsavory references, then posts it to my iFood. It's yummo! (But highly fattening!)

yo dame, I'm not exactly known around these parts for hating on ladies of any size... How you could interpret my comments as downers somewhat eludes me. Body issues are done. Either get a good fit or be more fit, face facts, and be awesome.
I'll try to be clearer: I don't think there should be stigma attached to Lane Bryant, (or "tents" which was just a little black humor) such that there would be an outcry against someone being incorrectly described as a potential customer. Maybe I'm just spoiled, coming from a family of 16s... Not used to that stigma.
Or are you calling me a fat ass? Great, now I'm going to emotionally eat. And I was winning my biggest loser competition too. (Suck it, CEO)

I stand corrected with regards to the greasemonkey thingy.

You fatties sure are irritable. Shouldn't y'all be shopping at Dress Barn anyway?

You wouldn't be such fatasses if you ate more bock choy instead of big ol' stakes.

Bae chu is Korean for bok choy. Also, I hereby suggest that cortex change his name to cortext!

I guess it's just weak that the very mention of Lane Bryant gets that "Heavens NO, darling, you're not plus-size!
Except that the poster in question actually isn't plus sized which makes the tent shit look really lame.
I know our culture has totally fucked up ideas of body size and what's healthy, but seriously. There's this whole range between size two and being overweight which is called 'average' and 'normal'. The original poster sits right in there (as do I). We're not all supermodels or fatties.

Ug. Meant to add: I don't think there was an outcry because four panels assumed she was fat, or at least that's not how I read it. His comment was just totally wrong and silly and had no place in there. Might as well tell a 5'8 guy to go shop at Big 'n Tall.

Four or five responses derailing to call out the comment as "just so very wrong" seemed clear evidence to me that some offended "you're not that fat, he's just being mean, only 'big girls' 'need' Lane Bryant" sentiment was going on... more so than I suppose would happen than if someone had recommended Petite Sophisticate. And now we're being divided into supermodels/normals/fatties and the boundry is still drawn at Lane Bryant? How is that better? Maybe I'm just defensive. Maybe I'm confused that there could even be a MeTa post about why an unapologetically and now seemingly deliberate dig at an OP was deleted. I give up.
I've already done my time in Lane Bryant, Torrid and God Bless Old Navy. So anyone else who wants to give me lessons in self deprecating weight humor is welcome to post a memo to my (I will reiterate) 5'9" size16-18 12-14, 228 209 pound, ass.

There's a "the core texts of MetaFilter" joke to be had here somewhere, if I could be arsed to think about it.

Yeah, see, you can be 5'9" and a 12 and weigh like 165. So just cause you think you are a fat ass doesn't mean we all are. Or that being a 12 means we aren't fit. So your "humor" is off base, just like the response that was deleted. Which was my point.

I don't think I'm a "fat ass." But thanks for inferring I am, just the same. Thankfully, I believe a woman can be overweight, underweight or a purple spotted leper prostitute without suffering from value judgments. Which was my point.

Oh man, this thread would've been much better if Four Panels had said he "felt like he was disappeared like a Jew in Auschwitz". Why are genocide references almost always WWII era Jews anyway? Couldn't someone say something original like "I was disappeared like a Tangut in Xia!"
Could we get temporary or permanent Metafilter badges of shame in our profile when we piss off the admins? It'd be a good intermediate step between warning and banning, and I think it'd be hilarious.
