I love it when the web eats itself. Congrats, "zabuni" and "localroger".

Whoa, I missed the original post. Hilarious that he chose a commercial-friendly CC license and then didn't want anyone to profit off it. I thought the "non-commercial" option was pretty obvious if that's what you wanted to prevent.

monju_bosatsu, how does
Still, the incident points to the perils of self-publishing and free distribution. There is a Creative Commons license that allows anyone to make use of a published work, as long as it is not for profit, but that is not the license Mr. Godin used. [from the linked article]
miss your central point?

ericb, Sulzberger went on to "clarify" his comments a couple of days later:
"We are continuing to invest in our newspapers, for we believe that they will be around for a very long time...And yes, I remember what I said here last year and what I was supposed to have said last month at Davos about not having a printed product in five years time.
So let me clear the air on this issue. It is my heartfelt view that newspapers will be around--in print--for a long time. But I also believe that we must be prepared for that judgment to be wrong. My five-year timeframe is about being ready to support our news, advertising and other critical operations on digital revenue alone ...whenever that time comes."
Don't you just love that "what I was supposed to have said" thing? He doesn't deny it, just worms around, even while acknowledging the "five-year timeframe" he used in the comment. Hilariously untrustworthy.

Of course, the NYTimes misses the central point, which was that Godin picked the wrong CC license to begin with.
Uh, maybe you missed this sentence: "There is a Creative Commons license that allows anyone to make use of a published work, as long as it is not for profit, but that is not the license Mr. Godin used."

I figure if they don't print the article, it doesn't really count as the NY Times.

To answer smackfu's question (and comment), the article is in the print edition. I noticed it this morning and thought of coming here to post it, but since I haven't been around here much in a long while, I figured by now a NYTimes reference to metafilter might be too old-hat to mention? It looks like Dan Mitchell's "What's Online" business-section column has mentioned metafilter threads at least a couple of other times in the past year:
(I'd link to the articles themselves, but they're behind the Premium Archive wall.)

(I'd link to the articles themselves, but they're behind the Premium Archive wall.)
October 28th:
THE COMING OF THE IPOD -- Five years ago this week on Metafilter, there was a discussion of what Apple's forthcoming big 'breakthrough product' could possibly be. 'Perhaps a device for breaking through things. A drill or something,' joked one participant. 'A Reality Distortion Field generator that runs on AA batteries,' wrote another, perhaps a Windows fan (metafilter.com).August 26th (regarding BP's introduction of a green energy initiative called Target Neutral:
Others were a bit closer, like the person who guessed it would be 'an integrated off-the-shelf home audio (even video) solution that you can control with your home computer (i.e. your Mac) that would get more people hooked on the Apple brand. It's a concept that would work well with the new Apple stores that have been opening up.'
Indeed.
'What a coincidence that this should come amid allegations of 'chronic neglect',' wrote a commenter at Metafilter.com. Another critic was not impressed with the projects the BP program will help finance. 'Color me skeptical,' the Metafilter poster wrote. 'They list four active projects, none of which strike me as particularly massive in scale.'

So, did localroger words have a compensation mechanism for his quote, or was the for-profit New York Times just smart enough to rip him off?

I apologize for my earlier outburst and accusal of hackery.
My howl into the Metatalk wilderness was not unsuccessful, though. I have had already half a dozen requests for pithy epigrams from webhip finger-on-the-pulse NYT journalists, and have been offered a permanent position as an inhouse Cranky Autodidactic Bullshit Artist. I'm flying out tomorrow.

Oh, and for Dave Faris: The quotes of me and zabuni used by NYT were definitely fair use.
