Sorry, but after playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I've got fistfulls of Septims to spare, yet SL only accepts Linden dollars. If you had suggested an EVE Online shindig which took advantage of preview accounts and worked in an ISK scheme worthy of the EIB scandal, I'd be a bit more interested.

I would. Really.
But I've tried to enjoy Second Life on three different occasions now. About once a year at this rate. And every single time, I find the whole thing terribly tedious and clunky. I've friends that love it, a co-worker that thinks it is something revolutionary, but I'm just not seeing it.
Maybe I'm not visiting the right virtual places.

Second Life is lame, it would be retarded even if it weren't for all the furries and doctorows.

ah, keswick is a really busy guy. keswick has a thrilling and engaging life, full of adventure and excitement! that explains why almost all of keswick's 3000-odd comments on an internet discussion site are shitty three-word throwaway garbage.
i don't really like second life either, but fuck, am i ever sick of cooler-than-thou misanthropy. don't be that dick who pisses on every campfire you come across.

this post inspired me to go check out download and play SL. I guess I've spent too much of my life playing first person shooters - it was killing me to not have a rocket launcher and a health bar.

I don't log on there much anymore, but I could make it this weekend if you pick a time.

I have nothing to add except this wonderful little snippet I noticed:
"Second Life" currently runs on 2,579 servers that use the dual-core Opteron chip produced by AMD. Each server is responsible for an individual "sim," or 16 acres of virtual "Second Life" land. At peak usage that means that each server is handling about three users.
Yes, 2nd Life pulls in revenue from "land" sales. However, eventually much land becomes clustered and valuable land is re-sold on a secondary market with no revenue going to Linden Labs. I predict property taxes. Or abandoning what is basically a 2D topology and going 3D - that will geometrically increase the revenue frontier. For a while.

I played about 10 hours (and still have it installed)...while the item creation tools were kinda interesting, as someone who doesn't like to chat online it rapidly lost me. What else is there really to do in SL?

Isn't a monthly tier fee equivalent to a property tax? If it's progressive, than it could scale to pay server costs. If it's non-progressive capitation, then it shrinks subscribers and balancing revenue/cost is trickier.
