policy on FPPs hosted on own site - self-links? August 25, 2006 2:03 PM   Subscribe

What is the proper way to FPP a fantastic audio link which is no longer available on the original site, but can be hosted on my own server? Does that make a self link even if it just an MP3 file download? Is there a third party service I should use?

It makes it a self-link. In fact, a very similar question (video content) was posted earlier this week to MeTa.

You should not do this at all. If it's not on the web it's not a good FPP. People will probably disagree in which case you can probably find someone else to host it for you, but the whole deal with the no-self-linking rule is twofold

1. self-linking can be spammy and lame, you should not materially benefit from your own FPP
2. you are not the best judge of whether your own content is interesting, even if, as in this case, the content is something that is not yours but would be hosted by you.

If it's not on the web, then it's not a good MeFi link.

Please see this MeTa thread from last week for more explication of this idea.
