schyler, I'm only sub-1000 because I was unemployed for 8 months in the Sunshine State (I guess "Unemployed guy with a gold chain named Raul State" wouldn't fit on a liscence plate) and I decided to do a Netsape "What's Related" search on Memepool, so it all boils down to serendipity ultimately, like much of life.

Synchronicity probably influenced more memberships than most would think. I know that I finally decided to join (after months of lurking) because I didn't have any friends other than my girlfriend in LA. Metafilter helped fill that gap...

Wow, jonmc, your #58 is even more impressive given that most numbers under 38 are for deleted members and most of the users under your number are very low or non-existent contributors (except for #1).

I feel lonely among my account peers, the "high four-figure crew". We joined before 9/11, just in time to see MeFi, however fleetingly, before it took a sharp turn toward NewsFilter. It's strange, I don't see a lot anymore around my user#.
The 14k'ers were the first in after the first big MeFi close, right? I do think, statistically, that the 14k range has pumped out a ratio of devotees on par with the sub-1k crowd, if you're just measuring contribution. Speaking of- can't the Contribution Index figure this out? Anyway, my point is that there were a lot of people waiting to get in, at that point.

If I recall correctly, OneBallJay was also known as accountingboy, who had a higher user number. Accountingboy "won" the #8 username when mathowie auctioned it off on eBay a few years ago, more or less as a joke. I think he paid around 80.00 - 100.00 for it, and then pretty much disappeared from the face of the earth.
Or am I dreaming this up? My facts may not be 100% accurate...

Actually, a significant portion of the 14kers joined during the first big MeFi close, which I think is related to the level of devotion shown by these magnificent specimens - when you have tosneak fight your way in, only those who really want it go all the way and the chaff drops off along the journey.

Also, as the uncredited source of the comment that sgt is quoting up above (re: 14Kers, awesomeness of), I'd like to point out that evinrude perfectly sums it up. sub 1K may have the occasional quonsar, or jonmc, or even that mathowie guy, but what are 3 luminaries when compared the ongoing contributions of a legion of active, intelligent, strikingly attractive metaheroes like we find in the 14K? Bring it on, jonmc, with your everyman bluster & your irish/italian/ny streetcred, you'll find these colors don't run! From the social libertarian fiscal conservatism of a yhbc, to the erudition & rational discourse of a languagehat, to the homoerotic come ons of an amberglow to the midwestern bush loving tomfoolery of a Steve_At, the 14K has all the bases covered. In fact, as much as I love iconomy & shane (13K & 15K respectively), I don't even think we need them (sure, don't get me wrong, we'd TAKE 'em in a hearbeat), the 14K has it all. Say it loud, I'm 14K & I'm proud. no other group of 1000 has as many vocal, disparate voices of contribution to this site, for so many years. Myself, I wanted an account very, very badly, since I'd been reading MeFi for at least a year when account signups were halted and had just never gotten around to signing up. But it wasn't until a few threads dripping with anti-gun hysteria and a complete dearth of actual facts about .50cal sniper rifles started driving me nuts that I actually got up and did something about my lack of an account.

Yeah--I remember thinking, "If signups are closed, why is the number of total members on the front page upticking by one or two each day?" When signups were visibly open, I didn't even bother with signing up, but once they were closed, signing up became a challenge.

HOW did you get accounts when accounts were closed!?
I was a heavy lurker, constantly refreshing the front page, etc. Saw a Meta thread reminding people about the donation link and bandwidth costs, felt guilty, sent Matt a $20. I got an unexpected signup link in return. Which was nice.
My story is very boring. Timeistight has a more interesting one, I think, featuring sneakin' in and such.

I was reading a metatalk thread in which someone mentioned that even though signups were closed, you could try and sneak in the supersecret razzamatazzy way, which was to go sign up at 5K.org, which would magically also register you here at metafilter. Right after that, the hole was plugged.

HOW did you get accounts when accounts were closed!
I have no idea about the 5k way, but for months all you had to do was put the correct address in manually (ex. go from signup1 to signup2) which bipassed the signups are closed screen.
It was easy, logical, and no doubt many used it. Matt eventually closed it, but it was open a very long time.

Stupid thread. I'm probably not the only one who stopped my heavy lurking and signed up in the months after 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan. As a 12k-er who finally joined in 12/01, I can't help wondering what took the 14k folks so long to see the value of participating here.

i wish i'd arrived here a few numbers earlier. still, i have a 4 digit /. number (not that i ever go there) and suspect i have a low k5 number too, but can't remember the name/pwd combo (and i think i was #2 at lambda, until they moved sites).
didn't realise the 14ks had to sneak in (or at least, some of them). in retrospect that seems like a good way of controlling membership. kind of like an aptitude test. and the "underground" aspect gives a sense of community. hmmm.

We few April 1st and 2nd folks should be a club. We didn't donate $5. We did, however, try very, very hard to fill out the registration page at exactly noon, mathowie time.
