There's really no need to be rude. I wasn't rude in either of my posts. If it's bad form to post about these things on both the blue and the grey, then I apologize. It certainly wouldn't be the first first time.

So while we're here, this one is a double as well. And just like brevator I just called that twice, but it seems putting dp's here may get them off the blue more successfully than just calling them in the blue. Oh I don't know. Conversation that thread got pretty funny though.

Matt needs to set up a mailbox/form, or encourage people to use [e-mail], for posts like this, and bugs, and other one-way stuff that really doesn't work as a thread on a community discussion forum. I mean, what's to discuss? Other than the ritual mocking of the poster. It just pushes all the horrible pissfests down off the front page. [bug, not feature]

Yeah a form would be good, or some sort of tagging of a post so that it could be reviewed by #1 and #1a when they stop by. Don't think it's something we'd wanna fill up his personal email box with.

The main problem I see with emailing Matt is that he'll prolly get many emails about the same post. But, whatever, if Matt would rather us email him stuff like this I'm down.

I pulled the original one. Email [or better yet, IM] works fine for reporting these, as does MetaTalk. You'd be suprised how few people email. I did leave the second post up because, as dabitch says, people somehow missed it the first time and had new stuff to say, maybe #1 will feel otherwise.

I've always been impressed by Matt's response time when I email (about bugs, issue at hand). I think people just want instant gratification on things (I know I do, that's why I'd be willing to pay more in a store just so I can get my goodie NOW instead of having to wait 5-7 biz days for it to be delivered).

MeTa is a horrible place to call out double posts. Considering how many double have been posted as of late, although it does seem to be dying down a bit, the MeTa front page would quickly become nothing but a mass of "double" call outs.

Someone started a thread specifically for people to add posts that were broken by the tagging feature. Perhaps a similar post could be created for reporting double posts? If it were listed on the side of metatalk, then people could just add their double post reports to it as needed. If an old thread could artificially be kept open past the usual close date, it could remain open until it go too large to be useful, otherwise, a new one could be opened once a month.

The email solution is probably working just fine, but having a thread would give other people something to look at, so they'd know if a given double had already been reported.

I tried emailed Matt twice the other day. His spam filter took 2 hours to reply to the first, and it never replied to the second.

You'd be suprised how few people email.

I'm surprised any do. There's nothing in the interface to suggest that emailing this kind of stuff is the way to go, as opposed to posting it.

And grateful, I think the way his spam filter works is that it stops replying after your address has responded to the first email it sends; you're whitelisted after that and the mail just goes through.

This is a good idea, as long as a) it's off to the side but b) people still see it.

In the ideal world you'd have a page featuring a running, searchable list of bug/doublepost reports, with Matt or jessamyn keeping a "status" column updated. Stuff could go there that just needs to be reported, but doesn't need to be talked about.

I'm totally defeated, completely apathetic, and duly curdled at the ubiquitousness of double-posting. Regarding the Etiquette Hell double post specifically, the query parameters "etiquette hell" entered into the Mefi search box yields an exact match of the original post from 2002. It's clear that a large faction of lazy users don't even entertain the notion of searching the site before posting.
