In response to this post about Dick Clark, here are some ways to make better current events posts (more inside).
Wow! 5 snarks in 10 minutes!

I shall now sit up, light a cigarette and utter a sigh soaked in ennui

Kirk it is a great suggestion, I hope all who are tempted to post newsfilter read it.

No, you're right, Kirk--it was just too tempting...

But, dude, if I don't hurry up and post this Yahoo News story right this second somebody will beat me to it!

This formal Post-->snarksnarksnark structure is so played. What say we all just start posting free-floating snarks all over the MeTa front page. People can just kind of insert their actual issues inside wherever the mood strikes, or not at all, doesn't really matter.

I think the adage to remember is, "You can't polish a turd."

Thanks chaz. I do think that this is something about which there has got to be good commentary on the web. I just realized that Clark has been doing this for every New Year I've been alive (and probably has had Barry Manilow on for at least half of them.)
My favorite posts are the ones that provide multiple angles on something of interest. There is an interesting subject here, but a link to an AP blurb on yahoo just doesn't really get at it. We are talking about a person who used to be the face of American popular music on television but has transformed over the years into an unintentional parody of boomer narcisism.

And yet, other people criticize for overlinking an FPP.
You just can't please everybody.

And don't try to please everyone. Excellent suggestions Kirk.

I don't get it. This is a MeTa thread, but it's useful and has reasonable, well-thought out suggestions for making metafilter a better place. WTF??
People seem to attach some kind of self-assigned kudos to posting newsfilter first, not seeming to realise they are reducing any cred they had.

Kirk: I think those are all good, perhaps common-sense, hints to think about before getting all newfiltery. For instance...I heard a pretty interesting story on NPR yesterday about Afghan and Iraqi refuges on the remote island of Nauru...now, I wouldn't post a link to some article about that specific news event...but it got me thinking to research Nauru more...and maybe i'd find something best-of-the-web about it.
But that's just me.
This formal Post-->snarksnarksnark structure is so played.
It's like when a baby is born. If the baby is ugly, the first thing that slips from your mouth is something about the ugliness of the baby. Or something.

Nice one, Kirk. I heartily agree. As one who has perused these pages for years, I am saddened to see the rapid infux of sub-par posting talent. NooB's be damned (ahem). Take heed all who enter here.

2) Provide multiple points of view: seek out editorials or reviews you agree with, then seek out editorials or views you disagree with, compare and contrast. What are the mainstream and the alternative press saying about this?
3) Find a novel connection: Is this similar to something else in history? Are there imitators in another culture? Is their a weird coincidence involved, a semiotic link worth following?
