Two decades in the blue May 19, 2020 6:23 PM Subscribe
May 22nd is my metafilter 20 year anniversary. I can remember signing up from my little cinder block office in graduate school at the University of Louisville. I thought I'd post now so I don't forget. It's kind of amazing that this community still exists, and wanted to thank everyone for their contributions. Since joining Metafilter I've finished grad school, had three more kids, gotten a full time job and of course gotten older. Thanks all for your many links, comments and useful solutions over the years.

Wow, that is awesome! Happy anniversary! You’ve posted some of my favorite things on the Blue this year...so if you notice someone favoriting older stuff, it’s just me, hopefully not creepily checking out what you’ve posted over the past two decades! (And with no judgment about older stuff, if any of it isn’t what you’d post these days. I had to get a brand new day account for stuff I said ten years ago here that was too stupid to live down, or at least it felt like that at the time.)

That's incredible. I suppose my 20th is not until next year so I am a relative newb too. I was going through some rough times when I first signed up here. Congrats! Good to see so many still here.

Happy anniversary! My 20th is next year too and Metafilter is still my home on the web, after all these years. I’m also glad to see so many others have stuck around.

This post is making me lonely for @ realjanetkagan who introduced a sleep-exhausted not-so-young mother to much that was cool online at the time, including and especially metafilter. I lurked for years before joining for Reasons, but yeah, I’ve been around here for a long time. Because I didn’t register right away, I don’t know when I started my very quiet presence here under a different user name. Now I’m here with my irl name, and our Janet’s been gone for years. But I think of her every time I log on. (And if you need something escapist and smart and funny to read just now, her Mama Jason stories were collected as Mirabile; available via ebook.)

I'll have been here 16 years in November on the anniversary of $5 Newb Day. The disconcerting thing about that time-span when you're already middle-aged is how little of my life has changed since then. Once you hit 40, you just sort of travel along a plateau and do your damnedest to not fall off.
