147: We Forgot What We Were Gonna Call This One November 30, 2018 3:15 PM   Subscribe

November isn't even quite over yet but Jessamyn and I are entirely done with it, and document a bunch of the good bits and some of the not so great ones in this episode of the MeFi monthly podcast. Also there is a very clever bird and some nude cats. Also I make a pretty solid joke about clouds. It's actually not very solid. The joke I mean. Also obviously not the clouds, they're made of vapor, c'mon. Yes. Okay. Hello.

It has just turned December here in rural England. Just in from doing pagan ... things ... in the woods, so now I've washed the worst of the ash off (I did not check the wind direction in time), this podcast, a nice slice of coffee cake and a mug of heated chocolate milk are most welcome.

{listens to the introduction}

Stiricide, a 17th century word, means "the falling of icicles from a house". (From late Latin stīricidium, from stīria (icicle) + cid-, cadĕre to fall)

Wait ... what ... the MetaFilter gopher server is back up?! (downloads plugin, clicks on link). By the power of moist buttered scones, it is and it works!

My very, very good friend Justin passed way early this year. I introduced him to The Good Place, and haven't wanted to continue watching without him, but I think I'm ready.

Thanks for that word, Wordshore. Good stuff, that.

You heard it hear folks, Cortex liked my mouth-sounds post. No banning me from MetaFilter. Yay. <3

I got so angry that I had to pause the podcast and run in from walking the dog so I could post this: "imagine" does not rhyme with "dragons"!

Also I was already thinking "11001" before cortex suggested that some nerd should probably figure out a better superpermutation than 147. Oops!

The real question is what would be a good swaggery slant-rhyming band name that works with my, the correct, pronunciation of "dragons". Engaging Dragons? The Cajun Dragons? Some Sage 'n Dragons?

I haven't listened to the podcast for a while, and the opportunity arose to listen, and thanks, people- it was nice hanging out with you. I just needed the background burble of good friends chatting to motivate me to get started on the worst thing ever (OK just at this time of year- end of year reports. (I'm a teacher.))

The moment I clicked "play," a mama deer and two young deer walked into view in my yard. Your intro song is apparently a deer call.

Flaggin’ Dragons

This is very good but suffers from the problem that the same people who could argue I say "dragons" wrong could still say it as a slantrhyme with "flaggin'" using the same vowel. I feel like the first half of the band name ideally has a word or words about which people have broad consensus agreement on the long-a pronunciation, so that it there's no room for ambiguity in the phonetic intentions. ("But Josh, people have broad consensus agreement on the pronunciation of dragon, too, so—" THAT'S IT, CHRIS, YOU'RE OUT OF THE BAND)

Fine.

I'm going to name my next bar band the Flagon Dragons, though.

For it to be a perfect rhyme I think we'd need to go with "Reagan Dragons," which sound like a Republican bar band.

That was an awesome episode.

Cortex, have you ever measured your vowels and done a vowel chart? (Weirdest question I’ve asked in a while)

I’d love to see where /æ/ and /e/ are in particular. I notice the shift to [ei] in lots of other words too and curious if it’s a more general thing or word-specific, eg, pagination dragons

I never have! But informally I am quite sure my dragon aberration definitely extends to a whole bunch of other words with the same vowels. You should see Greg flag the dragon's eggs, etc. I've never really interrogated similar vowel choices by my family members but I probably ought to at some point.

We Forgot What We Were Gonna Call This One

That would be the name of my second child: Weforgotwhatweweregonnacallthisone Peacock. Yet another reason I'm not allowed children.

Not having heard it yet, I worry that that's the joke. Yet I post anyway.

Yes please on a podcast archive! I sometimes want to look up old episodes by month/year and it would be so much easier than clicking and clicking or guessing the page number.

Back when there were open submissions for the Joke Show episode, I actually wrote a running joke for jessamyn and cortex to read aloud as themselves. It was meant to be a(n) homage to (1) cortex's pronunciation of "dragon" and (2) the rapport between him and jessamyn. Alas, I was too nervous to submit it at the time but WELL after listening to this last episode, I think it would have been okay? I ran across the file the other day and it made me laugh, but who knows if it's just funny to me. Jessamyn and cortex, if I find it again I'll send it to you.

Alternate episode titles:

- "It Sort of Helped"
- "Friend Rhymes with Bend"
- "CATpitalism"

Actually, come to think of it, those offspring in order of appearance:

Thebaby
Theotherone
Weforgotwhatweweregonnacallthisone
Thingy

No, no natural parenting skills here, though it does kind of fit with what I learned about four child families from the books I read when I was a child (Narnia, Swallows and Amazons, possibly also The Fantastic Four).

147! Divisible by 3! How do I know just by quick looks? Well 1+4+7 = 12 and 12 is divisible by 3.
And to tie it into the Permutation thing, all of it's permutations are also divisible by three.
