Not including some random comments on the megathreads, everyone seemed to really like my quote from Noel Paul Stookey.

As for other favorites, to this day I still laugh at Pastabagel's boring men comment, though I get why it may annoy people. And I still love the story of Nattie's parrot. The classics never go away.

Comments - uh, checks - Edith: Horse fucking (705 favorites) and Fred: Payment was in cheese. A lot of cheese! Come take a look (walks off) (488).

Posts: Ignoring the political (US and UK) posts leaves:
- One sandwich to rule them all (208 favorites)
- Psithurism is the best ism (131)
- A legal alternative to academic publishing paywalls (109)
- Edible uses of cheese (107)
- Let's talk about pies (104)

Favorites are nice as they indicate that, hey, that person has probably read the post (dissipating my constant fear that no-one at all has read something launched into the MetaFilter ecosphere). But over the years I've kind of leant towards preferring comments as a kind of vague metric; "it's all in the debate" and "a post sparking a conversation" and things like that. An example being the Penis Beaker one from 2013; coming in at 231 oft-brilliant comments from MeFites, that was the post that made me feel "Heck, this is a superb, smart and intelligently funny community of people. I should write more posts." I still read that entire thread of comments every now and then. I'm not sure what my favorite comment ever is from another MeFite (will think on this) but several in that thread could be it.

My personal favorite of all the posts I've done is the How to use a modem one for a combination of nostalgia and aesthetic reasons; that's got a reasonable number of favorites and comments, and the comments were (as they often are) hugely enjoyable to read and made constructing the post worthwhile.

Gone through the Penis Beaker thread again; my favorite comments just in the first quarter of it are from:

Kabanos:
I would be frightfully afraid I might wake up thirsty in the middle of the night.
Enjoy Bunsen's HoneydewTM!

Billiebee:
Apparently our penis beaker is strange and not the done thing.
At what point, exactly, does that come up in conversation?
"Those are lovely beakers, Joan. They're just like the ones we use to dunk Peter's hooha."

kmz:
This is what I don't get. Can the husband not get up out of bed to wash himself after the bathroom is free?
It's like one of those Bioware dialogue options that leaves out the neutral choice. Either slaughter all the orphans or buy them all ice creams. Clean your dick immediately or lie in bed the rest of the night.

phunniemee:
Maybe she sleeps there? [in the bathroom]
This is an excellent point. If I had a beaker full of ween drippings next to my bed, I can pretty much guarantee that that's the one place I'm not gonna voluntarily be.

MCMikeNamara:
There are so many unanswered questions. It's weird that a story about how this couple has special stemware for cleaning off the husband's cum-soaked junk actually seems to suffer from not enough information.

I can't answer the bonus question because we are only allowed to award a single favorite per comment, so how can I go back and tell which ones I liked best? I know I've flagged a few comments as fantastic, but apparently those are secret prayers to the mods, not a ledger to which I can refer.

My #1 favorited thing is an anti-Trump comment that involves a joke aimed at the middle-aged nerd demographic, pandering works folks

The one I wish was still the most-favorited: My girlfriend and I have a shed. I mean, not an actual shed, since we don't even live in the same state yet, much less the same house. It's more of a rhetorical device at the moment.

We are now married and cohabiting and still get a lot of mileage out of the rhetorical shed.

But I've told the story about how I finally snapped at my racist family a few times, and it's racked up a bunch of faves each time.

Someone has reminded me that I might not have told the follow-up: A couple of years ago, I was telling my brother-in-law this story. I glanced over at my daughter as I got to the punchline ("I taught my daughter how to say something in Kalderash that was very different from 'Merry Christmas', and I kept laughing as she said it, over and over again, to everyone in the house... I'll remember a three-year-old telling him to go fuck his least favorite pig with a big innocent smile on her face..."), and she went absolutely chalk white and moaned, "I. Have. Taught. That. To. Everyone. In. My. Class. Every. Year. And. Told. Them. It. Meant. Merry. Christmas."

My top five are all either MeTa stuff or other-people's-stuff

- me saying I'd still be around after no longer working here (and I am, hi!)
- me saying I married GregNog and bravelittletoaster (to each other!)
- post about taking a job at Open Library (and you all warned me!)
- follow-up in a thread by someone who has an ugly wife, very poignant
- follow-up about Taters Mystery

Oddly the first heavily faved thing I did that wasn't mod business was just telling an anon poster that the name she picked for her daughter was lovely. Also in the top ten was this joke which I still like.

I. Have. Taught. That. To. Everyone. In. My. Class. Every. Year. And. Told. Them. It. Meant. Merry. Christmas.

I can't even think about other favorite comments because this one is now holding all the favorite space in my brain.

Two of my top five most favorited comments are random comments about Lemmy from Motörhead (rest in peace). From this I draw the conclusion that the path to true popularity is to tell stories about Lemmy.

I love so many comments here by others that I don't know where the hell to begin. I think that I want to shout out to all the people who write long, thoughtful comments deep in threads with little activity. That feels like such a gift, that people are willing to put the effort for little reward, even the prospects of favorites. I always appreciate when people are willing to go that far to share their thoughts with strangers.

I got a lot of favorites out of turning people's comments into political cartoons in the Megathread, which was fun and scratched an itch because I'm better at drawing than I am talking politics, but I'm trying to respect the signal to noise a ratio.

My most popular actual comment was my Wheel of Fortune Story, followed closely by the wisdom of my father, each representing a formative memory, in its own way.

I love, love, love this comment by elizardbits, but also this AskMe advice, which I thought was really thoughtful: "Parental guilt is almost bottomless. Be wary of adding to the latter without being mindful of the former." from Clyde Mnestra.

It was a few fairly interesting articles that were very very dismissive of people with chronic pain as actually needing pain medication sometimes, and a fair few of us on metafilter have chronic conditions and have faced doctors either refusing to prescribe needed medication or lecturing us for needing it to you know- live. The reaction was pretty predictable. Especially when you note, as I did, that a lot of people with said ignored conditions are female or AFAB, which adds a whole layer of sexism to it. (To say nothing of the racism behind a lot of doctors refusing to prescribe needed pain relief to patients.) Someone later commented that if the FPP had been framed better and included a few more articles from the perspective of people with chronic conditions the reaction wouldn't have been so... GRAR.

My most favorited post is easily Where's My Cut? by two orders of magnitude.

Re: comments, it's... er, one of the worst nights of my life, in which many MeFites reached out to offer me tangible support and help in a really rough time. For reasons that confuse me, the second is a long discussion of theological disputes in Satanism and a field guide to Satanists in the news. An emphatic cheer for a man who engaged in a deeply feminist act by refusing to ignore a little girl--that one, in particular, I'm glad it resonated, so I would like to remember it again here.

Not one of these, on its own, is precisely the thing for which I would want to be known but I have to admit that taken as a group they paint an uncomfortably accurate portrayal of who I am.

And you just don't see that happening." and me replying that you elected this nitwit, this is on you (but with more anger and details about how the GOP supported him.

“Large earthquake off coast of Japan” from March 2011, with the resulting tsunami and nuclear disasters. Also my most commented-on, with over 3,200 comments — pretty huge in those pre political megathread days.

My most-underrated post, or rather the most poorly timed one (which I’ve mentioned before), was “Come with me into the tormented, haunted, half-lit night of the insane.” Also from 2011, it had the distinction of going live approximately 14 minutes after the post titled, simply, “Bin Laden”.

My most favorited comment is basically from the thread a week after the inauguration (Jesus, it was only two years ago?!) about my reaction towards Bannon, Miller, and the rest of the Nazis in republican clothing taking up positions of power and influence in the White House. It's me, talking about attending a Holocaust Memorial Day service at my synagogue where I found out a man I'd known most of my then young life had escaped a camp, and another man I'd never met showed me the numbers tattooed on his arm.

Most of my high favorite comments are angry, or despairing. On the other hand, and it's pretty different, is my comment letting everyone know I'd gotten home safely after the Tohoku earthquake. I spent most of that day cut off from Mrs. Ghidorah, only finding out she was safe hours after the quake, and that she'd be staying at work overnight, and the people here were a great source of information, support, and comfort, and I'll always be grateful for that.

My most favourited is in a political megathread. It just quotes Rebecca Solnit's 11/03/16 comment on Facebook, describing the horrible consequences in Kansas after incumbent Republican Sam Brownback won the governorship over a milquetoast, problematic Democrat.

My most favourited that is actually MY words, not somebody else's, is, "it would be nice if more white people learned the skills of compartmentalizing righteous anger, not letting it show, and de-centering yourselves by (at first, before saying your piece) listening to / soothing the anger and anguish of people who don't listen to or respect you," leading into my ask for normative White Mefites to consider joining a FB group to help me Trojan Horse the White-centric, White-fragile membership with woke White people.

(I've written more about this FB group in links in this comment. Currently, the leadership is making progress. They axed "civility" from their official description, yay! There's been some progress regarding awareness of & caring about trans issues (which I am happy enough with so far, because it was zero before). They were focused on GOTV until 11/06/18, so I didn't need to send out many bat signals. But there will likely be more flare-ups about race, trans issues, etc, after the holidays. Come check out the group, leave if it's not for you, or stay and ignore it until I bat signal you that your emoticons would help me push back for vulnerable people.)

And a comment by Marisa Stole The Precious Thing is one of my particular favourites because it made me laugh really hard. I quote it to people an an example of descriptive writing I can only dream of aspiring to. It's from a 2008 MeTa, about the AskMe question, "Is it appropriate to give dietary suggestions to the person in the next stall or not?"

A good friend of mine was a party once and some dude from central Europe whipped out an old, authentic Nazi tank flag, showing it around and talking about how it was passed down from his great uncle or whatever. The guy was an asshole, had been a problem at the party, and was of the fascist persuasion.

When he got to my pal, my pal calmly reached into his pocket and proceeded to light it on fire, with a stars and stripes BIC lighter. It burned right up and the guy was like "THAT WAS A FAMILY HEIRLOOM I WILL FIGHT YOU RIGHT NOW!"

My friend fought him and kicked his ass. The moral? Sometimes you have to kick a Nazi's ass.

However, I got my wish, from the comment, in two ways: 1) Soon after I posted that comment, I was offered a new job and had the surgery using my new health insurance, and 2) my new job is directly involved in increasing the transparency of healthcare pricing for patients before they (we) have treatment.

I'm happy to be preparing that bowl of dicks for the for-profit health insurance company to eventually eat.

So far 34 of you have favorited the story of when I changed the channel in the breakfast room of a hotel.

For 39 favorites, someone's friend in a 2015 ask me was talking to someone online who claimed to be a voluntary quadruple amputee. I suggested that they couldn't possibly be typing, and that they look for typos that wouldn't happen in text to speech as a clear red flag.

My most popular comment is a font joke.

The most popular comment I have ever marked as a favorite is a flag.

My most popular (that isn't politics or a quote) is this Byronic limerick from the "great poems rewritten as limericks" thread.)

Favourites by others: I do love and admire the quidnunc kid's entire opus list. Scrolling back through my favourites, I found The Whelk's handy guide to Solar System colonies, Shakespeare in BASIC by The White Hat, and herrdoktor's childhood memory of pizza and kindness.

Mine was my woeful comment on the 'you were doing it wrong' thread. As I've said before, I've never known whether people were favouriting the comment or the typo...

Mine was when I was trying to give some hope to someone who was having troble dating at 30. I told them how old *I* was and how I met my wife. I hope it worked.

I wasn’t aiming for this, but it appears over a hundred people share my enthusiasm over the cute bunny movie. This eclipses my previous most popular comment, a Clippy joke.

In terms of other people's, I really miss You Can't Tip a Buick. Anyone know what happened to them? One Second Before Awakening asked the same thing a while back but I don't think it was ever answered.

Wait really? That would explain the familiar style of said user's writing . . .

I will never for the life of me understand why the fuck anyone wants an Alexa.

This morning, I desperately wanted a few extra minutes of sleep before waking up, but I'd set my alarm on the Amazon Echo. In my sleepy stupor, I could remember neither the name "Alexa" nor the word "snooze." She did not respond to, "Alexis, give me five goddam minutes" or "Jeez robot, would you fucking knock it off?"

My most favorited comment was a long description of surgery using circulatory arrest in the context of an FPP about a near death experience. It was even sidebarred! My most favorited post was a link to David Neiwert’s excellent takedown of lost-cause mythology in honor of Confederate Heritage Month.

Me boasting that I had registered angryoldwhitemen.gop. Alas, I no longer have that domain. For a while it was redirecting to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

As myself, my most popular comment is one about the Times acting as a propaganda outlet for Nazis.

As Bunny Ultramod, it's me recalling an American Life segment in which a foreign person called the police on a homeless person in America -- to help them.

As Astro Zombie, it was the story of my girlfriend getting invited to Pixar to see Wall-E because she cried at the trailer.

My most popular comment is when I explained QAnon. Excluding political threads, I raged against the dying of the light.

"Sound financial advice or a bad porn joke. Tied with 80 favs each.

So the choice is yours!"

The masses have decided, and the bad porn joke wins the day, now with a total of 87 vs 82 for the sound financial advice. Thanks for your votes!
