Agregation sites as FPPs August 7, 2017 6:15 PM   Subscribe

These seem to be a lot of FPPs that are links to aggregation sites that pretty much take content other people have done, put a bunch of it together, and add ads. For instance, since the beginning of May this year, there have been 20 FPPs that include links to BoredPanda. (link is to a search of metafilter for instances of boredpanda) There are fewer links to similar sites like Viral Nova

Our basic line on this is, it's fine to link to reasonably reputable aggregation sites, but also it's good practice to link to originals when you can.

Would you prefer that someone go through and link each individual source image? Honest question.

Also, isn't Metafilter kinda a place that aggregates stuff from around the web and adds ads?
posted by cyphill at 6:41 PM on August 7, 2017 [4 favorites]

No, because we aggregate links. We don't rehost the content thereby eliminating both the hits to the original and the tracking information that goes along with it.

BoredPanda is a pretty lazy link.
posted by 41swans at 7:12 PM on August 7, 2017 [13 favorites]

Even though sometimes I do laugh at the content, I'm almost always put off by BoredPanda in particular because on top of aggregation plus ads, it is completely awful when it comes to splitting content across 10-20 pages for no reason other than impressions. I'd probably not miss them if we stopped posting links to it.

Nearly every Bored Panda link (mine and others) has at least one comment akin to "Thank you, I really needed this today." I'll stop if that's the consensus, but those kinds of comments are my favorites, regardless of the post.

The thing about those aggregator posts is that they generally serve as a pretty solid application of low-stress brain brillo. It's a million pictures of good doggos! It's a million kittens in buckets!

It's a rough old world out there, and if the schtick of a few users here is to smooth it out with 234132+ pictures of otters who just can't even, I'm in favour.

They're good posts, Bront.

IDC if BoredPanda is a lazy link. Life is fucking hard right now. Anyone who takes the time to share a BoredPanda link with some cute cats or whatever in it and posts it on the Blue where I can see it = my hero. They are absolutely good posts, Bront.

An otters resting place is called a couch, while otter poop is called spraint. That can have a wide variety of smells, including mown grass, tea or (less surprisingly) fish. Baby otters can be called kittens. People who edit Wikipedia argue a lot about otters.

There's a growing perception that one use of Metafilter is something akin to therapy or self-care, and people think these links "help them cope" or whatever, so I'm sure they're fine.

I don't like them and think they're lazy links to somewhat sketchy aggregators, but I don't begrudge them, really, and if they help some folks, then hey, cool.

From that wikipedia talk page:

"Otters are curious creatures and in zoos, often build ladders out of their enclosures at night to explore the zoo. They then climb back into the enclosure and hide the remnants of the ladder. They know they will be fed and looked after in the enclosure but they have an undying curiosity about the rest of the zoo."

This question isn't about if it's okay for anyone to enjoy the odd five minutes free of misery, fear, hate, and disgust, or your opinion about fellow members, it's about sourcing of posts.

Regarding aggregation, I have more problems with sites that yank an entire piece from elsewhere and repost (and imgur posts, for one, are often terrible offenders in this respect) than something like bored panda's usual MO with the cute pics from various places (no one image would be a good post, and the collection is not just grabbed wholesale from a post or article on another site), especially with the added user content. But let's say a site just posts a bunch of pics from Site X, it's almost always going to be better to link directly to Site X. Sometimes it's not obvious that this is what is happening, so it's good to keep in mind and check when possible.

Wow, some users are apparently repeatedly going to Bored Panda and making Metafilter posts out of that kind of content, over and over... can you please not? Thanks

This reflects my sentiment. I'd love to see slightly fewer Endless Outrage posts and slightly fewer cuties, aggregated posts even though i think they're both fine in moderation. I feel a similar way about Atlas Obscura. They have great content, but it's very frequently HuffPo'ed from one or two other sources. I try, when I can, to link to those other sources instead.

Personally (I'm just one MeFiFi and an outlier in many respects here) would like to see 80%+ less Endless Outrage posts. More than a few times I've come to MetaFilter with some curiosity or enthusiasm, started to read the main page, and seen the first three or four posts as being Outrage - at which point with enthusiasm quickly draining away I switch off the computer and go out for a walk.

Am okay with the cute posts, though I rarely visit sites that are "click through to the next picture" as it feels a bit like work, clicking for every new picture. A nice gallery index where all are available for selection in one go is preferred.

Wow, some users are apparently repeatedly going to Bored Panda and making Metafilter posts out of that kind of content, over and over.

It looks like people are posting once or twice a month; most people who make posts have a few regular go-to sites. I made 23 posts in July and three (two animals, one food) were Bored Panda. I'm okay with the signal-to-BoredPanda ratio here. Honestly, this seems like one of the easiest kinds of posts to just skip since you don't even have to click through.

The last Bored Panda link I circulated with my friend-group largely consisted of images that were scraped from one artist's Instagram feed.

In these cases, I'd almost always prefer to link to the feed directly, except that this person evidently used their Instagram account for both personal stuff and art stuff. The Bored Panda article ended up being the preferable link to share, because it aggregated all of the art (and filtered out the other 80% of brunch photos, etc).

I broadly agree that it's preferable to link to original sources, but just wanted to drop a reminder that those aren't always available, and I'll gladly make a few sacrifices in the name of getting happier content on the Blue.

To clarify - sometimes attention needs to be brought to an issue, e.g. sexism in tech - but at least on twitter, it turns into a circle jerk in which everyone's posting the same thoughts (today it's some flavor of "men, do better" - as if misogynists care). Metafilter is better at nuanced discussion but it's still 90% This Person Is Bad and Wrong* and I don't know what the point is of hundreds of comments echoing that when surely he's not reading it (and I'm sure he doesn't care).

Yes, I can skip the posts. I already said I'm doing that. Metafilter becomes less useful as a whole if I'm skipping lots of posts, though.

When I looked in on the politics thread this morning, it was like the entire thread had moved past the other stages of grief and had settled into bleak despair. They were talking about civil and global wars and predicting an upcoming worldwide financial collapse. I closed the window and probably won't go back until they're off the subject.

I disagree that the post about the Google Dude was only "Look at this asshole." That seems needlessly reductive. (I posted it, so I'm obviously biased, but) Personally, I think it's okay to have posts about the state of the world, and the negative and hopefully positive effects various events are having on it. On us. We learn to help and support one another by talking about things that affect us, and sometimes, by coming together in solidarity. YMMV, of course.

Sometimes, what one person avoids for their good mental health can help someone else's.

As one of the prime offenders here, I do use the least-skeevy source and do use the original where possible. For example, I don't post Sad And Useless links unless they acknowledge the source; I track down the original or I skip it. Pleated Jeans, on the other hand, is often cleaner than the (always-cited) source. Atlas Obscura links are sometimes part of a post, but I try to add related links, too.

Regarding ads: I guess I assume that everyone here uses an ad blocker like I do, so that doesn't factor into my choices, sorry.

Bored Panda does decent listicles, and they put 5 or 6 items on a page, far from the worst offenders. Much of the time, my response is Huh, meh and move on. Not likely to have great discussion, but not actually a problem.

I say this pretty often. Make a great post. 1 link, or 6, interesting links. Content I maybe wouldn't have stumbled across, or a topic that generates lively discussion. There are occasionally terrific posts with great content that don't really generate discussion, and I'll try to drop a Thanks for posting in there, because those folks should be encouraged. There's a lot of cool stuff I wouldn't have discovered without MeFi. And there are SLNYT (and other) posts that generate discussion that I really want to participate in.

One of my favorite professors used to ask Is it worth saying?, Has it been said before?, Is it said well? about books and short stories. Please make posts that meet this criteria and reward the posters with thoughtful, funny, pithy, excellent comments, and favorite the post and the comment, and generally put effort in to making MeFi fantastic. That's what we're here for, that's what generates page views, ad revenue, connections, etc.

Regarding "best of the web," isn't that highly subjective to the point that it's not good as moderator-side filtering mechanism so much as it is a poster-applied criteria? In other words, the mods aren't supposed to review every post and ask themselves "is this really the Best of the Web?" but posters are supposed to think "is this something I really want to share on MetaFilter as a sufficiently interesting and/or amusing bit of the internet?"

And I'll co-sign onto the appreciation of cute, fun things in the mix of interesting, unique, and generally depressing. MetaFilter isn't turning into Fark or UpWorthy or whatnot because of a few BoredPanda cute/ silly/ fun animal aggregation posts. For sake of comparison, there were 20 posts on July 30 alone, so 20 BoredPanda posts in 3 months doesn't seem too much. Yes, it's a lot of one site, but we have a lot of posts from major news networks, some "MetaFilter aligned" sites (for instance, Atlas Obsura and The Nib are often linked on the front page), and a few other categories.

And I'll co-sign the sentiment "if you don't like a post, try the next one. Or take an internet break."

Yes, and we all used to wear onions tied to our belts then, too.

Aggregator sites suck, no argument. But the Internet as a whole sucks a lot more now than it did when we were young and pretty. Sometimes you have to make do with what you have.

At different times over the last 10,000 years that MetaFilter has existed, we have frowned upon The New York Times ("It's an obvious link and EVERYBODY has already seen it"), YouTube ("Single-Link YouTube posts SUCK!!"), The Onion ("Really? LAME!"), The Toast ("Too much Mallory Ortberg!"), and many other sites that didn't pass the sniff-test-du-jour.

Stop frowning, ignore the kitties and puppies if you don't like them, embrace the Schmoopy Age of MetaFilter (this took me a long time to reconcile with, but I am all for SchmoopFi now), and get on with it.

As long as the nature of the post is clear above the fold, I have no objections to anything anybody offers up. We can all skip over any post we don't want to engage with, including link-filled "regurgitations," at any time.

I do agree with the idea of linking to originals, or at least aggregators that properly credit and link to their sources whenever possible, though.

It seems to me that long ago, when Metafilter was cool, these kind of posts were frowned upon. They are ad-heavy and not so difficult to find for those who are inclined.

So, my feelings are complicated. Because I'm right there with you, and also have been making an effort to get past it at the same time.

Discussing this in passing with the team the other day (it was my mid-week weekend, didn't want to dig in at the time) I mentioned that I personally still have a reasonably strong allergy in principle to especially the more aggressively monetized aggregator sites, where they're really transparently just in the scooping-up-content-to-slather-with-ads-on-a-schedule biz rather than chasing down delight on the web for its own sake and on its own terms. The weirder, wilder, blogging-just-to-blog nature of the early 2000s has withered hugely in the last decade as the web's changed shape, and I think that in particular is a bummer both as a general reality of the web and for the effect it has on what's out there to comprise a post on MeFi.

But there were eh, questionable-motivation aggregators back then too, and generally speaking it feels like some of the stuff like Bored Panda has at least converged toward a more reasonable middle-ground compromise compared to the worst of those—I don't worry about super sketchy malware stuff showing up in a post so much these days, routine clear attribution seems to be pretty common among the more well-established aggregators, etc. They're still not chasing the dream of the web I hold in my heart, and I'm a big proponent of (as folks have already discussed above) chasing down the original material instead when it is workable. But a couple folks who like to make this sort of post have already acknowledged in here that they think about that too; it may just not always work out. I've had that problem myself a couple times, where the non-middleman sourcing for a cool artist or work is...actually just shit. Actually just very poor web content, and someone's roundup and writeup of it is the more readable place to land.

So I've been getting past my allergy and e.g. letting Bored Panda links stand in general, because there's What Josh Personally Prefers and then there's as a pretty separate question What's Good For The Mix Of The Front Page. And I care more about the latter than the former; I can express my preferences in the posts I want to make, but I'm resisting my natural years-baked-in inclination to kill some aggregator stuff because, look: I'd rather people make, and people enjoy, posts about stuff on the front page than to have the front page be self-satisfiedly quiet in pursuit of a static "best of the web" standard in a changing webscape.

I like that people like posts about fun or cute or nice things. I like that that's part of the mix. I find that valuable enough to say, eh, Bored Panda's not my model of an ideal web but they're collecting some good doggo pics and for fuck's sake bring on the pics of good doggos if that's working for folks.

It is precisely the opposite of a Trump thing, which is why I think people like it. A doggo is just a dog. Just a good boy. Just a pup, a pupper. They're good dogs, flerm.

Instead of crappy links to BoredPanda et al, people could just post their own series of very cute photos with proper attribution given here on MetaFilter, without the shame

You do realize that Bored Panda is nearly all crowdsourced? That why 10+ Doggos turns into 200+. Sometimes they start a list, but it's mostly all original content, like "I'm an artist and I draw butterflies on matchsticks."

I feel like both modern iOS and Android systems support first class content blockers in their WebKit-based browsers. What platform can't do this?

You've half answered your own question.

Just chiming in to say that I really enjoy the cute animal posts. They always brighten my day, and it's nice to have them in the mix on the front page. Obviously if every other post were a cute animal FPP that would be a problem, but we're very, very far from that.

people could just post their own series of very cute photos with proper attribution given here on MetaFilter, without the shame.

Well, one of the fun things about cute animal posts is that sometimes it leads into mefites linking to their own adorable animal pictures, so it's the best of both worlds. No tags required.

I did not know that. Explains the shaky quality of the posts from there.

I greatly dislike those posts.
That's why I don't click on them. Turns out not doing a thing takes literally no effort.

Only winning move is not to play etc.

As one who doesn't normally go to Bored Panda or Atlas, I appreciate an occasional link to a catse or doggo post.

And Johnny Wallflower rocks, so get over it.

…catse?

No. Please no.

Kitteh. Or kitty. Or wuzza-wuzza-kitten. Or…

Not "catse".

I've already seen entirely too much cat ass. Don't need to go there.…

they are pandas that have had holes drilled through them.

This is just to say ...

...that the machinist in me is deeply agitated that you've conflated boring with drilling. They're not the same thing! Drills wander! What about reaming to fit? Aaaaaagh!

What if I--ahem--I mean a person I'm unaffiliated with rips all the images out of a BoredPanda collection, posts them to Imgur, then links to that Imgur album in a FPP? Asking for an unaffiliated friend.

That's basically self-linking, don't do that.

That doesn't fix the problem of when a site swipes all the content from another site without adding anything original.
