I'm not surprised that few folks were still following the thread about the 2016 World Chess Championship a few weeks and 16 games after it started. But I liked that Exceptional_Hubris capped it off with an anecdote about encountering the victorious Magnus Carlsen after the final game.

Late in a long, dystopian, narrative-crushing election year, during a goofy flotation-centric derail in the nervous calm before a literal storm, ricochet biscuit strolled right up and perfectly lanced an understated West Wing reference with
Hurricanes, buoy, I don't know.
Also this is slightly offbrand but I still love every single comment in this stupid pun thread.

Most of my favorites from 2016 are not particularly happy but I stumbled across this little anecdote from usonian, which I can't help but imagine acted by early Michael Cera.

This one is depressing but worth a read: Pizzagate spills over into Austin, TX restaurant East Side Pies (from spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints, who incidentally has a wonderful username).

As a palate cleanser here's psoas doing the Silicon Valley Friends theme song.

Here are some I'm still smiling/thinking about:

Bob Dylan described as a typical Nobel Laureate (Kattullus)

"just Wagon Train in space" (JoeZydeco)

a very concerned commenter on Playmobil BMX stunts (Jane the Brown)

Crossing the Nullarbor (The Notorious SRD)

Depression is the Dread Pirate Roberts (plinth)

Vote Mexit (EndsOfInvention)

Night of the Hunter was a documentary about my childhood (pxe2000)

Metatalk is the Seattle process in text form (fireoyster)

Denial and addiction (Maias)

It exceeds the numerical criteria slightly, but the latin mouse's comment deserves to be seen and favorited by everyone who has ever worked in the arts

I wanted to link everything in this thread individually, all the answers are so good

cortex: Also this is slightly offbrand but I still love every single comment in this stupid pun thread.

For those who missed that thread, note that cortex himself was an absolute monster in there, his 300+ comments including such gems as How I Met Your Mothra; Sherlock Holmes Alone; The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Interrupted; and Immanuel Kant Hardly Wait -- pop culture mashups that not only made us laugh but made us think.

I'm struggling here to put a sincere spin on phrases like "touched something primal," "reached another plane of existence," and "missed his true calling." It was an impressive thread.

Yes!

I thought of Devonian two nights ago when I was lying in bed - wait a second, I'm going somewhere with this - I was about to shut off the light when I looked up and saw a teeny house spider making its way back up the the ceiling via a strand of web. I wished it good night and turned off the light.

Oh the cheese heist mention reminds me; I can answer one of the remaining questions now due to a recent conversation with a somewhat indiscreet doctor's surgery receptionist. Namely:

Why did "Andy" have eighteen pounds of Red Leicester cheese?

So. Back some time before the cheese AskMe, Andy bought a regular block of cheese from the supermarket. He got home, ate some of it, and was ill afterwards.

Andy took the cheese back to the supermarket, confronted the manager, and threatened all manner of things e.g. legal damages. The manager - ex-army type - stood his ground and dared him to try any of the things he threatened. Andy backed off.

Andy, with his anger issues, seeked retribution and visited the supermarket over a period of time, stealing blocks of cheese as he went. When he returned to his base, adding to whatever, his "cheese vengeance trophy collection" or whatever his angry mind thought it was.

The odd thing was; Andy kept trying to eat some of the cheese but it kept making him ill. After a visit to the doctor it turned out he had milk or cheese allergy or intolerance or something. The cheese was perfectly fine. But he kept stealing it because ... I don't know why. It's the kind of thing angry/vengeful people do?

Eventually he was suspected of the continuing anomalies in the stock levels of cheese at the supermarket and banned from the store on sight. Why was he suspected? Because the doctor's receptionist and the store manager are a couple (in small isolated English communities and valleys, everyone eventually mates with everyone else*) and they had a conversation and joined the dots.

And, like Rogue One to A New Hope (but with cheese instead of death star data files), that's the prequel for how we arrived at the start of the cheese heist rural English village farce. Andy has now moved far away thankfully so my concern about having an axe embedded in my front door has abated. He apparently now spends much of his day, in his place in the north of England, being very angry on Reddit as he is under some kind of curfew.

tl;dr - the cheese was originally stolen by someone with an allergy/intolerance to cheese.

* This is an exaggeration, but to a degree that varies greatly from village to village. Everyone has needs. I come from one and we observed that the farm next to ours had not so much a family tree, but a family graph. Several of us in my year at village primary school also bore an uncanny resemblance to the then-retired village milkman, but that's another thing.

- In thread "Detained German physicists hear about atomic bomb (transcript)", lollusc had a comment that managed to turn the whole premise of the article on its head for me, making it less Ken Follett and more Christopher Priest.

- This is from July 2015, but I kept returning to this languagehat comment as the year went on, for obvious election related reasons.

- Comment about punk and fashion from Frowner

- In Ask, a mikeh answer to the question "Did my carpet cleaner just tell me he was on drugs" that made me laugh a lot (and still does).

Finally, every answer in the (still unresolved!) Ask question "Who here likes puzzles?", especially the bespoke Turbo Heaven Android app that quinndexter made.

This got some favs, but it was in MetaTalk over Christmas week, so many people may have missed Eyebrows McGee's holiday mod nightmare, Edgar Allen Poe style.

I also liked Atom Eyes' summation of the life of a snowman in the C&H inspired thread last month. And from the thread on The Quidnunc Kid's amazing LOTR limerick summary, plinth's youthful summary of Oedipus Rex and Antigone.

While we're on the subject of Tolkien, I'm mostly avoiding my politics favorites, but let's just all agree that Grangousier warned us way back in May. Fly, you fools!

codacorolla described a card game I would play in the tail end of that thread on magical healing, and made me almost snort a beverage with this summary of what they think the musical Cats is probably about, having never actually seen Cats. (Spoiler alert: invented plot summary has at least an order of magnitude more plot than the actual musical.)

AskMeFi, the world's finest crowdsourced agony aunt, continued to tell it like it is in 2016. ldthomps: This isn't a dress rehearsal life. You don't get to stick around in limbo never getting your needs met just because you want to keep your parents, or your wife, or WHOEVER happy, and then do it over again later. bilabial, on how to decide what kind of houseplants are compatible with your lifestyle. And fullerine's answer to this post on jokes to make middle schoolers laugh still makes me laugh. No comment on what that says about my sense of humor.

Thanks for being clever and making my friends, family and coworkers ask what I'm laughing at for another year, everyone.
