My plan is to board with, "Good luck, we're all counting on you." If Hillary has it sewed up when I land I will demand to be taken to the nearest taco truck where I will order some carne asada tacos. If the senate goes blue I will demand extra guacamole. Also the Cubs just won so...maybe a deep dish pizza somewhere in there? Lol like I wasn't gonna get tacos and pizza anyways, I love you America.

I posted an Ask last summer about finding more local women-only groups to join, and one of the suggestions was to checkout Meetup (dot com), where I pretty much immediately found the group of my dreams.

Now I'm a co-organizer, so we are having our election night gathering at the pizza place up the block from my apartment, to be followed by either champagne bottle popping in the streets of my overwhelmingly blue neighborhood or ululating impotently in the general direction of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. But I know that in reality I'll be sitting on the couch eating fistfuls of chex mix with the metafilter thread open in front of me.

Incidentally, last election day I found out why chex mix has peanuts and other junk in it - because I made it with just the carby chex part, and it turns out you can eat nervously chex indefinitely for hours until the entire giant bowl is gone without getting full. But then the next day you've gained 3 pounds of water weight from all the salt.

I'm having a couple friends over. I only have broadcast TV, so is PBS my best bet for not-terrible coverage? Should I wait until the CA polls close (10 pm central)? Do they call states before the last polls close? (I seem to remember some trouble around that with a previous election - calling states early makes people less likely to go vote or something.)

Update from an overseas voter:

Here in Hong Kong I will be teaching on Wednesday morning. My lesson runs from 10 am to 1:15 pm, which is 10 pm-1:15 am Tuesday night Eastern time. Theoretically - THEORETICALLY - if Florida, Pennsylvania and North Carolina have been called for HRC by the time I start class (the polls there having closed one or two hours earlier) I will not bother to turn on a livestream on the interactive whiteboard - she could lose all the other swing states and still have won! I will still be sweating about the Senate but will be able to, probably, teach. Or teach and cry at the same time.

But if we are still waiting, I will throw out my lesson plan and just improvise some sort of discussion group activity as we watch PBS and freak out.

At 11:30 Eastern time I have a 15-minute break and will run into the corridor and probably post something exciting on Facebook. And maybe FaceTime my mom. And then cry again.

My home state of California will be called as polls close there at 8:00 Pacific time, which is noon Wednesday our time. I will freeze the IWB while the students do a reading passage and use the class computer to see if my favourite propositions have passed, and then when class finishes, run back to our main office, high-five/fistbump all my American colleagues, rush through some paperwork, pour a huge glass of whiskey, and order in a pizza or two and read our hopefully-celebratory threads (which have been GIVING ME LIFE - thank you mefites!) that evening.

(I also will be wearing my Hillary shirt all day, in contravention of the dress code, because I'm teaching at a satellite location and no one will know. And because my colleagues who are not American need to know I didn't vote for the fascist, just in case.)

I'm with Carol Anne -- fed up with the media circus, so I'm going to avoid it altogether until there is actual news to report, which I don't think will really be available until the next day. The race to call states as early as possible rankles me, and especially where the results are likely to be close and there are gangs of angry people at the ready I hope that responsibility will prevail -- but recognize that the race for ratings will "Trump" good journalism as it has this entire election cycle. So I'll vote, then tune out until election officials have had the time to make the counts and release some accurate information.
posted by cubby at 8:39 AM on November 3, 2016 [1 favorite]

I'm voting at 6 am sharp, then have a full day of non-election obligations. After that, I'm working the late shift on the voter hotline, so I'll be among fellow Hillary supporters as results roll in even if we don't have time to talk much. (If you're in line when the polls close, you CAN vote! Operators are standing by!)

If mountain states (CO, AZ, and UT in particular) turn out to be key, I'll feel pretty good about Doing Something, and hopefully that will counteract my nerves.

asperity, your plan has a lot of merit. I'm going to the opera with a friend on the 5th (Aida at the Met, noon matinee), and if we had bought tickets on the 8th instead, I would be insulated from the media hubbub during the most nerve-wracking hours.

I usually take off work to do GOTV, but I couldn't this year. I'm working 8-5, and then I have class until 6. I might try to make it over to the staging location to do the last door-knocking shift, but I'm not sure it's worth it, since polls close here at 9. I might just go home and collapse. There's a results watch party near my apartment, but I generally skip it out of sheer exhaustion. I am also running for election as I mentioned but you can vote for 12 out of 12 people so I am a shoo-in. Since I decided on that, I've scheduled a blood donation, we're moving the toddler to a new daycare so I'll be available for comfort visits, and I'll probably get my oil changed. Mr. Machine and I are voting first thing, and I've called dibs on wearing Baby Machine into the poll, because by God, I am going to relish pulling the photo out on the hologram-a-phone in a decade's time and then embarrassing my son by explaining for the 9237840298374th time that not only did Mama specifically hang a picture of Brienne of Tarth in his nursery the week before he was born, but she wore him into the voting booth on the day Mama fulfilled her dream as a contrarian 12 year old, and voted for Hillary Clinton as the first madame president of the United States.

Then, because I took a couple days off, we're taking Baby Machine to his six month check-up, where I expect lots of nice things to be said what a cute, healthy, developmentally progressing baby he is. I know everybody thinks the doctor likes their baby, but I assure you: the doctor likes our smiley baby.

Then, there will be vaccine shots, and the baby will be a little less smiley, but hopefully all will be well home in the afternoon.

So, probably CNN on TV for the cameras, which I don't particularly want to watch, but we have Sling and don't get any other election-results channels. Washington Post and Metafilter on the laptop for sanity. We haven't planned a menu but tacos sound really good to me now. And then in January I plan to use a vacation day to watch history being made as the first female US President is sworn into office.

Monday night my son is having his FIRST EVER SLEEPOVER PARTY! so we will have 3-5 8 year old boys (depending on how many decide to stay vs chickening out because it is the FIRST EVER SLEEPOVER PARTY for all of them, so its awesomeness seems to be equal parts excitement and terror). Our plan involves the Giving of the Goodie Bags at 9ish so that anyone who goes home will get one, but people who stay won't feel left out. Each goodie bag will include (among other items) candy and a whoopie cushion. I have no idea how much sleep I will get, if any.

In other words, I am not anticipating being able to keep my eyes open on Tuesday night to follow the election results past a certain hour. Or at least I am hoping said tiredness will keep me from staying up all night stewing.

I am going to vote in the morning and then go to work, hopefully at noon if I can talk anyone into switching with me. Otherwise at 1:30 which means I will be there unable to follow any election news until 9:30 and I don't think my heart can take it. Plus some of our, ahem, "wackier" customers are almost certain to show up and be loud about the election which is not easy to take when all you can do is smile and murmur soothingly. But work will end and then a friend is having a party, so as soon as I leave the bookstore I will be there to either celebrate or crunch down on the ole cyanide tooth. Either way there will be wine.

Man, I am seriously freaking out about this whole thing, and am not sure what I'll be doing on Election Night/Day, other than voting. I wish someone could tell me it's going to work out okay - I don't even know how you all are stomaching the thought of watching the results! I tentatively took the day off of work and might go make phone calls or knock on doors if I feel I can harness my anxiety for good, but on the other hand I might decide I just want to keep things as routine as possible and just work after all.

Or maybe I'll go to the local Aviary and spend all day in my happy place until they kick me out.

I'm meeting some friends to order tacos and drink the following themed cocktails:

Stronger Together: a modified Manhattan with bourbon and mezcal
Make America Great Again: I originally wanted this to be Goldschlager and the cheapest, shittiest champagne I could find, but I couldn't find Goldschlager so instead it's just gonna be White Russians
The Stien: a few drops of gin diluted in to a big glass of water to increase their potency. Potentially the strongest drink of the night
The Johnson: blunts

Otherwise I'll just head home, picking up an Egg McMuffin on the way [real]. Since my neighborhood has lots of bars and restaurants there may be some festivities overflowing into the streets so maybe I'll walk around a bit. Also on the menu, either Chocolate Diesel (S) if I'm out or Abbot Kinney OG (I) if I'm home.

We actually have a lot of local city stuff going on - a four-way race for a new Mayor, a school expansion referendum, and several contested city council seats. I'm also up for election for my second term on the School Committee but I am running unopposed so that's one less thing to worry about.

There's an official gathering of local team D at a pub that I should drop in on at some point, but I'll probably be at home until 8ish and see how things are shaking out on the east coast first.

I'll be at work during the day, where one of my duties will be serving as stage manager to an orientation of new employees. We have a guest speaker who has already said that he will open his remarks by asking who has gone out to vote yet, and he has joked that if anyone responds that they have not yet done so, he will bring them out to vote that instant.

I will most likely vote while on my way home from work myself, at the little grade school two blocks from me, and then I'm assuming that Best Bar In The World will be having election results on the TV there (since they had the debates) so I'll be going there. Conveniently it is on my block and I have been used to making my way home in an alcohol-induced fog in the past (and once I did so with a broken foot that I didn't yet know was broken).

Am hoping for a repeat of 2008, during which I had a similar schedule (different bar up the block). There was literal dancing in the streets following Obama's election, including two women who had each somehow acquired American flags and ran into the middle of the street and did this sort of spontaneous majorette routine with them. I was hugged by total strangers and ended up dancing to Earth, Wind and Fire at 12:30 am.

My plan is to go to the Seattle Stranger's election night party, and possibly party-hop to the big party the state Dems have at a downtown hotel as well, with some friends. And then a bar in my neighborhood is having an election night party, so I may end the night there depending on how festive or apocalyptic things are.

I originally, of course, planned to get a bit off my face, as seemed appropriate given the high stakes. But I work for an international organization, and it was decided someone had to be available to deal with questions at the beginning of the day in Europe (i.e., midnight in Seattle) and for some reason I volunteered for that. So I'll only be a bit tipsy. Unless she (oh please gods) pulls ahead early in which case all bets are off.

But basically: I know I will not be able to tune it out and there is no way in hell I am going through this alone.

(I asked my boss if, should the worst happen, I could take tomorrow off to grieve and/or plan the revolution. She replied that unfortunately, she had not the authority to sanction that, but we could certainly hold a two-minute silence.

I had a lovely birthday with family on November 8th. My mother and I went to vote together, feeling hopeful, then we went to a movie that was more enjoyable than I expected (Doctor Strange), then other family met us for a really nice dinner at a restaurant where I indulged myself. Then the requisite, very embarrassing gift opening in front of people (which I hate, but it's not about me, right?).

But then, later, we made the mistake of turning on the television. An unusually gratifying and warm birthday turned into a sort of once-in-a-lifetime horror movie in real life. Numb and fatalistic that night, yesterday I was just sad and despairing.

And then today I made this half-assed but poignant video: I'm Not Here, This Election Did not Happen...

Thanks to those who sent me memail birthday wishes, especially wonton endangerment, who is a low-key but very giving and kind member of our community.
