Ditto on the two X'd boxes, which then render as four open boxes in the title bar (current browser: Chrome running on Windows Vista). They're cute at times, but I think it's safest to assume not everyone will be able to see them.

I only see the boxes with an X in them, too, Chrome on a Macbook. I installed Chromoji back when we had some emoji post, and that was fine for a while, and then I was suddenly seeing weird tracking stuff (via Ghostery, on Mefi, where I knew we had not been doing any kind of tracking like that internally), which disappeared after disabling, so I got rid of the extension and I'm mostly emojiless now. I see them in gmail, and as wintersweet says, in the Chrome tabs-not-pages, but nowhere else that I can remember.

Do the emojis display the same way to everyone?
There are different sets for different platforms but they are basically the same though I think the "disco man" is actually a tango lady? Wikipedia is helpful for this. I still see some random boxes in some of the Wikipedia chart. They are different from unicode stuff, for example, sort of.
My SO finally got a smartphone this month so I've been suddenly emoji-immersed finding stuff to send to him. It's weird how much stuff there is in the emoji set and also how much stuff is NOT there.

It seems like less of an issue for comments than for posts. The biggest problem would seem to be emojis in post titles for search results. The emojis don't display in my browser but, technical problems aside, I can't imagine typing a special character from memory to find a post from three weeks ago. And even if we didn't care about members being able to search properly or view the contents of a post reliably, it seems like not a great idea for a site as SEO-dependant as MetaFilter. Sort of in the same vein as ROT13 or foreign language posting.
For what it's worth, copying and pasting the emoji in this post title breaks MetaFilter search with some sort of internal error message under the "tags" section of the search results. (And maybe the "users" section too, unless we have 65k users with an emoji in their username). Though it does turn up this MetaTalk thread in the "posts" section.

Also, this particular post breaks the RSS feed. Feedburner strips out the emojis in the title resulting in two blank spaces. That means RSS users have nothing to click on to read the thread. The MetaFilter thread RSS also strips out the special characters, resulting in "Comments on: " with no emoji thread title.

Thanks for the heads up. Some emoji characters break RSS parsers out in the world in interesting ways, so we just strip them for feeds. It is a problem for this post which should be an outlier. It's also an interesting problem for newsreaders. The blank title is valid RSS even though it's not good practice. So should newsreaders turn that into something like [no title] on their end so you have something to click on?

That's how web-based e-mail clients sometimes handle blank subject lines. For desktop it varies. Apple Mail for example just shows a blank subject line if the subject is missing. I double-checked the MetaTalk RSS feed with a desktop client and it rewrites the title as either "Untitled" or "No title" in a couple different places. Viewing the feed directly in Safari or Chrome or with an online RSS service is where the problem shows up. Could the RSS title for this thread be edited?

Not without editing the Web title as well. I agree it's not a great situation, but we're discussing the ramifications of emoji and this is something that can happen. I don't think we'd allow an emoji-only title under normal circumstances, but MetaTalk isn't always normal.

This is the honest truth: I went into character viewer on my mac, searched for "box", chose the boxiest looking glyph ("ballot box") and pasted it into my comment. Then I decided to install "Emoji Input" into Chrome so I could see the silly emojis, especially if they are going to stick around. So I didn't intend to paste a bunch of poop into my comment, though that is a lot funnier than a bunch of boxes.

I've opened this post in Chrome on a new Android phone, Chrome on an old Android tablet, and Chrome on my desktop. The emojis were different on every single one. On my phone, the dancing man is actually some shapeless yellow blob.
I opened it on my desktop last, and I see twice as many emojis as I did on the other devices. There weren't boxes on the devices or anything; those emoji just didn't appear. Snowflake BS makes a ton more sense now.
On my desktop, Chrome shows all the emoji EXCEPT for in the tab header. Isn't that the opposite of what everyone else experienced?

Basically we (human culture) are trying to replace written language with a series of cute hieroglyphics, which I am ok with, but I hate hate hate that they are different on different platforms. It goes far beyond typeface differences. A picture is worth a thousand words, but if I send you a picture and it looks one way to me (A disco guy) and you get it and see something else (a tango lady) how the hell are we ever going to get anything done?
But maybe that is already where we are with written, textual language, and we are all just used to it and we'll GROW that used to it with emoji.
William Gibson retweeted someone's screenshot of a tweet (I include the provenance because the Gibsonian convolution resonates for me) about emoji the other day, and, well, so there's that, too.
Finally, and even less relatedly, but still related: I forgot my laptop at home, so I am using a desktop PC that I very rarely use, last logged into in September, and when I came to MetaFilter today I was appalled because it was still the OLD MetaFilter. I had gotten so used to the new look (modern) that I forgot the old one even existed, and the venerable old design that I felt protective of (even though I welcomed the change, when it was offered) looked shoddy and weak. Go figure.
So, I guess bottom line: I for one welcome our 💩 overlords.

I suspect banning emojis because not everyone's browsers render them properly would be a decision that would look hilariously quaint pretty rapidly. I think it's one of those things that self-regulates reasonably well. People by and large don't use them except in jokey-stunty discussions like this one. I don't think they'll get widely adopted in more serious discussions (if ever) until they're pretty much universally accessible.

That said, it's good for everyone to remember that not all browsers display them (I, for example, see nothing but boxes with x's in them above) and therefore they should be used judiciously.
Clearly, the thing to do is to treat this as an opportunity, and introduce reasonably priced, cross-browser supported, MeFi specific MetaStickers. What could possibly go wrong? 🍔

For example
billiebee: I was at work today so I could only see [square box] on my [computer] and I was all like [sad cat face] but now I'm back home on my [smart phone/device] I can see them properly and I'm way [happy cat face]. In conclusion [thumbs up] [party popper] [ghost]

Ah, thanks. Another fun fact: You can find out what they are supposed to be by entering them as a Wikipedia URL. For example, I didn't know what 🎉 was, so I copied it in the URL bar as a Wikipedia page, like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/🎉, which gets rendered as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%F0%9F%8E%89, and it then loads en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_popper. But some emoji just dump you in the general Emoji or Emoticon pages, like 😸/Black Cat Face

Animated emoji would only be a problem if you were somehow accessing MeFi via GMail, or Japanese text messages. If you are, kudos to you! Otherwise, relax- that site indicates that no actual OS has animated emoji.

In Japan, 💩 is known as unchikun, or just unchi, and sometimes is considered lucky. So for those of us who are fans of Japan, 💩 is an essential emoji.
I have a "lucky" golden unchi keychain which I got years ago on Strapya World. Later on, Consumerist took the larger model of said keychain, which was a paper weight, and turned it into their "golden poo" award which they handed out for a while as their worst company award. These days there are variations with faces, and colors like silver and pink.

It's interesting how radically different the rendering of the emoji can be on different devices. In Firefox on Windows 🐔👈 is clearly a finger threatening to goose a chicken (so to speak). On my iPad, it's a finger about to poke the back of a disembodied chicken head.

But your emoji lead me to this silly picture game (🐴+🐵 = ?), which requires the first image to be a donkey, so I award you +5 internet points!

"They're not searchable"
I wonder what Google's reason for that is.
💁 These are part of Unicode (which is why they should be googleable 🔍), they're just like more familiar symbols such as ©, and it makes no sense to to talk about MetaFilter not allowing them unless you live in 1998 and think the web should be restricted to the basic western character set. The reason why they've become part of Unicode is because they're an important part of electronic communication for a large portion of the world's population 🌏.

I have the hardest time understanding the appeal of emojis. I mean, hasn't every internet user in the whole world already used smilies on a message board, quickly becoming bored of them to the point of forgetting they exist?

I would be angry about them if I wasn't still torqued by all the apps that "correct" my text-based :) and stuff into images/emojis. I said :) and I meant :), fuckers. Having it as a default is bad enough. The apps that don't make it configurable are written by people who will roast in the depths of the Slor when their judgement comes due.

Yeah, sorry you didn't pick it up earlier in the thread. We allow emojis in post titles.
And it's probably just a technicality, but the post you mentioned is using a unicode character—not an emoji. And we've always allowed unicode characters on the site.

Well, if you want to be technical, emojis from the Unicode character sets are Unicode characters too :-)
(that specific character is a fleuron from a block of dingbats in the "symbol, other" character category, which is the category where the emoji characters live...)
