WHAT HO, MODS.

My wife is from northern Rhode Island, and her mother's people are all French-Canadian. As a result, meat pie is A Thing.

On every New Year's Day, we all go to their house and several meat pies are served. Plenty of ketchup and mashed potatoes are available as the only side dishes. Jessamyn is correct to say that the texture is rather dry and crumbly: it looks like meat granola. And there is a small quantity of spices -- cinnamon, perhaps, or nutmeg. Jessamyn, if you really want to try making it (and it's pretty easy), I can send you her family recipe to prepare yourself this New Year's!

Also, for a retired mod, Jessamyn was on fire on this podcast.

My Grandma was raised in Massachusetts but born in Acadian New Brunswick, and I second this. Grandma wasn't serving meat pie ("tourtiere") when I was a kid, but Mom remembers it from her childhood, and remembers Grandpa was an especial fan.

I've actually long suspected that Natchitoches meat pies may be related - I've tried making both, and there were similar spices in both (wenestvedt, my recipe called for allspice and cinnamon); just an extra kick with cayenne in the Natchitoches. And since the Cajuns started out as displaced Acadians, there may indeed be a common ancestor for both Natchitoches meat pies and tourtiere at that.

I don't mean to be totally flip, it's a lovely idea. I just think we need to be realistic so that our reach doesn't exceed our grasp.

So okay maybe I was wrong about the origin of Natchitoches meat pies; they're more similar to a variant of empanada.

I still have that suspicion, though, dammit.

I think the more important question you raise is whether we can sing "ain't nobody got time for that" in tune to the podcast theme song.

Coincidentally, the exact same thing was said by Grand Moff Tarkin in a deleted scene from Star Wars.

I think we can agree it was out of character.

First question: are there 100 active MeFiMusicians?
Second question: if not, can we simply submit a (written) line to the exquisite corpse of too many MeFites?
(Because I love the surreal insanity of Too Many Cooks, and I like the idea of an exquisite corpse of a song, but I can't sing worth a lick, unless I'm hidden in the context of others.)

(Even worse idea: someone write up a little melody and some chorus lyrics, and then 100 people send in their vocals for that chorus, and we make our version of We Buy White Albums. If someone wanted to be terrible and creative and more terrible, they could build up the song, Too Many Cooks-style, where the layers eventually smother any sense of coherence and become a crashing wall of noise and one crazy guy running around.)

Hey, mathowie, this is your Quonsmas giver. I'm so happy that you liked the book that I may have made some sort of happy squee noise at my desk.
A few more deets on the book I sent - it's a representation of a big swath of the photo collection at the museum I work for. It doesn't show every photo we own, (and there was a lot of arguing discussion about what was to go in or be left out, but it gives an idea of the scope of what we have. My part of the job was pulling the works from storage and getting them photographed and making sure the photography was organized correctly for the publishers, which is a pretty minor role but when you put a publication out it feels like a giant collective birth, so it's still exciting.
Anyway, yay, you liked it, yay!

I was randomly reading through a thread yesterday from some years ago, and I ran into another reference by cortex about the significance of a number palindrome. Before I listened to the podcast, it never crossed my mind to think about that as an interesting feature of numbers.

The Wikipedia page on palindromic numbers does list single digits, including the number 0. Apparently, in base 24, the first eight powers of five are palindromic:
5^0 = 1
5^1 = 5
5^2 = 11
5^3 = 55
5^4 = 121
5^5 = 5A5
5^6 = 1331
5^7 = 5FF5
5^8 = 14641
Also, it appears that all palindromic prime numbers have an odd number of digits.

I love palindromes, because I love symmetry. It makes me feel that all is well with the world.

Yo, jessamyn: this recipe comes from a small slip of paper that was published in memory of local worthy:
In loving memory
Claire M. Coutu
August 11, 1917 - October 25, 2012

Memere's Meat Pie
Preheat oven to 425.

1 double pie crust
1 lb. hamburg (extra lean)
1/2 lb. pork
1 onion, chopped fine
1/4 tsp. clove
Salt & pepper to taste
1 large or 2 small potatoes, mashed

Method:
In a pan or deep frying pan, put in hamburg and
pork with onion, salt and pepper.
Simmer, until meat is done.
Add potatoes and clove, other spices may be used like
cinnamon and nutmeg and poultry seasoning.
I use clove with a pinch of of nutmeg, and poultry
seasoning.
Bake @ 425 for 30 minutes or until crust is light
brown.
- - -
My wife puts a ring around the crust to make sure it doesn't burn. Aside from that, go for it!

"Why do they convert it?"

Because .gif is suuuper inefficient for animation. mp4 is going to load and play significantly faster, especially on mobile. Animated gifs are basically a sequence of compressed images gifs glued together, whereas mp4 can (and does) do compression between frames, and is all HTML5 video tag compliant.

The bit where Twitter uses JavaScript to swap the mp4 in on play is annoying but once you do click it, you can download the mp4. But if your chief complaint that the thing you download is not in GIF format, well, just think how much time you'll save never arguing about how to pronounce GIF again.

snorkmaiden, I just got a kitten this week, and he came up to my close office door mewing. I was sitting there going "I HOPE THIS DOESN'T SHOW UP IN THE RECORDING FEED, ESPECIALLY NOW WITH THE SAD CAT STORY GOING ON" and lo and behold, my mic caught all of it. I cut out every meow I could, but I must have missed one. It was incessant meows for about two minutes.

Great podcast as usual.

jessamyn, re: greasemonkey scripts:

- I recently posted a new version of the hedgehog comment pointer; it's compatible with the Modern theme. Any older versions of the script should still work with the Classic or Plain themes (if not, let me know and I'll update my documentation).

- I really wanted the narwhal and unicorn buttons again too, so I made some changes to get that script working locally; need to figure out the best way to share it. I've also sent Rhomboid (the original script author) a message with my changes.
posted by rangefinder 1.4 at 7:59 PM on December 25, 2014

How is it already the 31st??

As a quick follow-up to my last comment: I've posted an updated version of the unicorn and narwhal buttons script on greasyfork.org, with Rhomboid's permission (thanks, Rhomboid!). The narwhal should now work with the Modern theme, and I also made some other adjustments, e.g. to make the text inside the buttons easier to read. Happy new year!
