Tired of arbitrary favorites. A call for orthodoxy. October 9, 2014 7:06 PM   Subscribe

Favorites! Where do I start? Some people don't get enough. Some people get too many. The system we have now is broken. We need a more orthodox approach to give out faves. They have to MEAN SOMETHING, people!

I'll start. You get negative points for a 'Metafilter: something something' comment.
You can only give/take one favorite per comment you say?

No problem. I suggest we form coalitions. Then the coalitions add or subtract favorites to equal the appropriate number of favorites.

Example: User mortified_amortized makes a hilarious comment referencing The Fifth Element and The Wire. The coalition, The Spamish Inquisition works together to give mortivied_amortized +10 favorites.

If a user breaks a rule and requires negative favorites, the coalition combs through the favorites they've given to the delinquent user and removes them.

Easy.

Lets get cracking. There's been too much favorite chaos around here. Organize this place!

Come, TheWhiteSkull,
'tis not too late to seek a newer Blue.
Comment!, and typing well in order smite
The sounding fav'rites; for my purpose holds
To post beyond the subsites, and the skeins
Of the most popular threads, until I die.
It may be that the mods will ban us out:
It may be we shall cross the Happy Sidebar,
And see the great quidnunc kid, whom we knew.

I miss the MetaFilter of Narrative. Before the stories sunk, like the bright sky god, into dreaming. Now we walk the shadow kingdom, dreaming in pixelated rushes, each turn of the orb sending us closer to the edge of space, while the Slug King moderates our speech, sliming our verbs into his gullet. "Is it safe to eat?" He glurgs. But no one can tell Him. It's problematic.

Perhaps someday when all is
Lost and mods no longer rule this site
Under the ads which can't be
Stopped, behind the heedless

Tide of spite, we'll
Hear the distant cry of Matt, his once proud
Icon warped and twisted; maybe then we'll
Stop the faves and wish that we had all resisted

What about foreign, non-USAsian favorites? Favourites?

I've done some trading in those; you have to really be on top of the current exchange rates to make any profit.

If interested, MeMail me along with 20 favorites (or 24.35 favourites CDN) for my system and tips.

The Favorite Swamp? I rather like it. The trees are quite lovely, anyway. I don't believe FOUS'es exist.

arcticseal, did you know that in Canada they call Canadian favorites "backfavorites"? It's true! And when I was in France I found out that what we call "French favorites" is actually an illegal sex act. Involving mayonnaise.

It’s not really about asking for favorites but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right number of favorites as you go along.

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

bugbread, you have entirely far too many favourites at your disposal ... either that or your swipe function is set to hair trigger ;p

Are you implying that Bugbread didn't favorite my comments for their refined, dry wit?
posted by double block and bleed at 1:04 PM on October 14, 2014 [1 favorite]

Since big government (read: Matt) isn't willing to step to the plate and ensure Universal Favorite Care, it's up to us wealthy philanthropists to recognize our privilege and do what we can to ensure that nobody goes to bed worried about their lack of favorite coverage.

This post exposes a bug with the favorites leveling option. Rather than saying below the post "has favorites", it says "13 users marked this as a favorite".

This post should have no more or less favorites than any other post with favorites! Just as the coalition says, only using the existing site option to enforce precisely this behavior.

Coalition, I beg a thing
Redirect your favoriting
To the cause of countless fave
And upvote this, to fairness save

If mods took favorites away, they would mean a lot. They would mean something that the mods took away from us.

And great, the Firefly theme is now running through my head.
