After hearing the discussion about domains and Matt saying you can register stuff "like jessamyn dot dentist", I'm like all, erm really? dot dentist?!

So I went to instra.com and typed in jessamyn.dentist to see if it was a legitimate domain you could buy. And here's a screendump of what came up (I swear that is not edited or photoshopped).

(n.b. for clarity have no intention of buying jessamyn dot anything as that would be a bit odd. Experimenting using the example Matt gave in the podcast.)

I was hoping--for some insane reason--that there would be more about the Old 97's, but I guess having the song they took their name from will have to do. :)

There are two threads about the end of Saturday morning cartoons, mine on May 30th when it was announced and Tell Me No Lies' one on October 4th when it actually happened.

Also, when are you going to start featuring FanFare content in the podcast?

What ho, Mods!

That Tylenol murders thread was just the latest among several here that have awakened old memories from when I was a kid, and filled them in with real, historical details. It's a very interesting thing, contrasting my childish understandings with the cold facts. Sometimes, it turns out, I had a pretty good grasp of what was going on!

Good work, MetaFilter.

I basically don't use FanFare. I love that it exists, but I watch things sufficiently time-shifted from everyone always that all I do is read stuff after the fact, occasionally. So I don't mean to be all like this about it, but to me it doesn't lend itself to talking about in the podcast in the same way as some of the other sites.

there would be more about the Old 97's

I saw them play at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle a zillion years ago (maybe this show) and they did Timebomb which was my favorite song for a short while and was one of the ten songs I had on my Rio MP3 player back when you could only carry around 10 MP3s at a time. Their standup bass player was AMAZING and I remember very little else about that show.

when are you going to start featuring FanFare content in the podcast?

It's kind of weird, I guess it's really hard to have a "favorite" FanFare thread (or multiple ones) each month, they're not quite the same as other parts of the site. I imagine someday something really notable will happen in a FanFare thread and we'll mention it, but what shows and movies you want is such a personal decision that each of us pointing out our favorites wouldn't be as relatable as what we liked on the main site or Ask MeFi.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 5:33 PM on October 7, 2014 [1 favorite]

Yeah, exactly, I'm sure stuff'll come up now and then (and if there's some unusually great discussion it's fine to drop us a line to let us know), but FanFare stuff is sort of more self-defining in general for its audience so e.g. telling a bunch of people who mostly don't watch a show to go read a thread about S3E12 is less likely than telling them to go read a thread about Victorian napkin folding or whatnot.

So, Jessamyn.club is something that really should happen, though I've no idea exactly what it will be when it does.

Wordshore: After hearing the discussion about domains and Matt saying you can register stuff "like jessamyn dot dentist", I'm like all, erm really? dot dentist?!

Yes, this is a thing. In short: ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) realized they could make a mint by charging $185,000 per new TLD (top-level domain), and the flood-doors opened.

I'm (not really) tempted to register MetaFilter.Land to host some crudely re-skinned game, where everything is re-colored in MetaFilter color schemes.

The best thing is the stupid repetition in TLD options. There are THREE variations on "photo" - .photo, .photography, and .photos -- and there are both .bar and .pub, and a ton of really, really dumb ones, like .blackfriday - seriously, what the hell? A domain for a single, terrible day?
posted by filthy light thief at 7:26 AM on October 8, 2014

You don't even need to search for common default filenames to get odd stuff on Youtube. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll search for "lsdkfj" or "jjjjjjjjjjj" or whatever kind of random keyboard mashing I'm in the mood for, and the results usually don't disappoint.

Welcome to the great registrar cash grab - if you are a photography company, you now need to buy three more domains to keep all your bases covered.

Thanks for mentioning my project on the podcast!
"Is that a zip code?"
Yes, 95008 is a zip code in Campbell, California, where I grew up.

If there's a more interesting username backstory, I haven't heard it.
"Why isn't it one.crazytrick.com?"
Just for you, now the "one" and "1" subdomains can be used to access the site :)

OMG ENOUGH about Tilde Club already: it took over what feels like 20 minutes of this episode.
RULE ONE OF TILDE CLUB: ALWAYS TALK ABOUT TILDE CLUB.

On the other hand, I can't get enough of cortex mouth-essaying about clickers.

Can we have games at Fanfare? Because wow, a never-closing Kittens Game thread would be WONDERFUL. (Yay I got Chronophysics; boo it's meaningless; yay, Iron Will run!)

+1. Cortex's verbal and written analysis of clicker games is better than that of more than a few games journalists on this genre, and more engaging than similar academic writing. Wondering if he's wasted as a mod and a future and golden career beckons in game description and analysis.

I snagged mefight.club as soon as it became possible. It's just a 'network hub' shits and giggles kinda thing at the moment, until I figure out something snazzy to do with it.

Yes I just searched through about a hundred billion old emails to find it.

The enthusiasm for Tilde Club is a concrete reminder of just how far behind the times my web presence actually is.

I stared a new job into 2014, and immediately logged into our institution's shared *nix server and established my official, professional web presence in the skeleton-generated tilde extension of our TLD site.

I fear this means I've now become the equivalent of those laughable old timers who used to rant about the utility of physical transparencies and analog chart recorders.

I don't have a lawn, but you kids had better get off my sidewalk grating.

I forgot about that, since nothing ever came of it. It is frustrating really, I've talked to a bunch of lawyer friends and they're all just kind of flabbergasted that the DA didn't care enough to prosecute or even explore the case beyond my phone call for something that is a serious felony, impersonating the court.

If we actually figured out who did it, I think it would have been fun to talk about.
