Eep! I joined about a month before I adopted my daughter, who I look at every day and wonder, "Where did all the time go?" She was 14 months old then, and she is auditioning for a pretty decent orchestra tomorrow morning.
I'm fairly sure where a load of the other time went.
This joint is a lot nicer than it used to be, which I attribute to the excellent moderation — for which, much thanks. Sterling job. Go youse.

Metafilter has been a big part of my marriage, we both signed up that day and it's often a source of conversation with us: "Did you see that on Metafiler?"; "What are they upset about now?"; "You should ask that on AskMetafilter"

I got in under the wire for free, but all this relationship talk has led me to discover that my official MetaFilter relationship started 2 weeks before my current relationship.
I'm not quite sure how to feel about that, but "happy" works.

I really feel like I ought to have more to show for the past nine years... But then again, being divorced, remarried, moving seven times, having a baby, and getting knocked up a second time isn't doing too bad.

The only real problem with all this longevity stuff is that when I'm telling a story someone on Metafilter told I am usually like "my friend..." instead of "this person I know from the internet" because 1) people take it more seriously 2) I actually do feel a really strong sense of community here, so I end up telling a lot of stories about "my friends" who I have not actually met.

I think the reason I didn't sign up on this day nine years ago is that I didn't have $5 in a bank account to spare. The moral of the story is that a lot can change in nine years, thank god.

Strangely I had a weasel (well, a ferret) within a year of joining; I'll assume he was officially issued. (RIP, Meester Nathan Ferretpants 2005-2012.)

But seriously. . . There have been many times in the past nine years that I have tried to wean myself away from this place in favor of other priorities, but I always come back. Ya'll are just too interesting. The time hasn't been wasted at all because I've learned so much here.

Interesting point about zarq: back in 2004 (not 2003, I don't know why I keep on about 2003 save that I can't count), zarq was worth $10 million dollars in today's monopoly money. But the global financial crisis wiped out 90% of his Hotels, and today he lives alone, naked and shivering in a run-down house with Free Parking. But as F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "there are only second acts in American lives", because he always turned up late to the theatre, the thoughtless beast. So I look forward to the day when zarq reaches into our Community Chest and realises that he has won second prize in a beauty contest, and is $10 richer.

Took me two days to join, 6 days until my first comment. Since then it's been 9 glorious years of distraction, banter and researching arcane minutiae! I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Probably the best single $5 I ever spent.
I end up telling a lot of stories about "my friends" who I have not actually met.
My speciality is "Oh yes, I was just in a big conversation about...." without specifying that the conversation was online, with people deeeply deeply devoted to the topic. I don't know if I sound like my life is some endless Algonquin Roundtable of scintillating debates or something but it's easier than explaining it to people who don't do this sort of thing.

Well, dammit. I could have sworn I carefully stepped through the user numbers and Cranberry's was the first on the 18th. And that's totally not the case! Assuming that the matt123test and matttest2 were testing the $5 sign-up code (meaning that the Nov 18th signup of katesippey doesn't count), then the first must be thelastminute, unless that name indicates something. Like, before Matt turned on the new signup.
I don't know I'm speculating. It's not like the mods can't just tell us.

My disappointment about that was that I had my browser window open and clicked that link at exactly noon (Matt time), to the second according the US standard, and didn't make it in on April 1st. Then I did on the 2nd, and I was so excited to be among the lucky 50, or whatever it was, and then learned that a bug in Matt's code allowed like a couple hundred people in and I didn't feel as special.
But when he abandoned that plan and the didn't open signups back up until November and there were thousands of people who had to pay money ... then I felt special again. Which was important because the 14k'ers really ragged on everyone "younger" than them for a long time.
So, ten year anniversary for some of us will be coming up in April. Weird. Not that I've continuously been here, mind you. But it's still kind of weird. Even if you subtract the time I was away, it's still longer than any of my romantic relationships.

Well, dammit. I could have sworn I carefully stepped through the user numbers and Cranberry's was the first on the 18th. And that's totally not the case! Assuming that the matt123test and matttest2 were testing the $5 sign-up code (meaning that the Nov 18th signup of katesippey doesn't count), then the first must be thelastminute, unless that name indicates something. Like, before Matt turned on the new signup.
I don't know I'm speculating. It's not like the mods can't just tell us.

Ten days (and almost 2500 new members) after the rush began, user #206 (officially "joined sometime in 1999" but I recall it being in late October) thought (a) I really should throw mathowie some money and (2) I have this blog name that became my 'second identity' (matt himself responded to my first post here with "ha! good one foopster...") that I didn't want somebody else claiming on this particular forum, so I ponied up $5 for a second account I never intended to use (because I thought there would never be a time I'd NOT want to be 'wendell'), and was gobsmacked to see I had acquired #20007. So near and yet so far (and whoever was going to be #20006 never completed the signup process). Maybe when the user numbers reach 200K (by my guesstimate, Feb or March of next year), I'll go after #200006.

Nice to see that MonkeyFilter is still plugging along. I'm in that thread and reading it now, I didn't realize that by that time I'd been on MonkeyFilter for a year — my user number there was "63".
There really was a huge pent-up demand by 2004. I'd been lurking mefi since at least around the beginning of 2003. The pent-up demand launched MonkeyFilter in November, then that April experiment showed that hundreds of people were willing to follow a link pretty much exactly at noon in order to get an account. I'm pretty sure that I didn't find it surprising at all that thousands of people signed-up in those first days in November, even with the donation.
It was pretty weird to lurk a website like this for more than a year and want to be part of the conversation and you couldn't join. And it was possible to read everything then, and I did. I was a MeTa junkie from early on, from long, long before I actually was able to join. One of the weirdest experiences was that when I finally did join, a whole bunch of people seemed extremely familiar to me, like people I'd known pretty well for a while, but they had no idea who I was.
But those $5 noobs really blew the doors off the place. Suddenly there were so many new people and it really changed a number of things. Mostly for the good, not that there was anything wrong with the people already here, but just all the new blood.

When I signed up, I thought $5 sign ups must have been available for a while and I had just never noticed, so I excitedly signed up as soon as I saw the link. It didn't dawn on me that I was a $5 noob until years later. I am happy to be one, though.

Back in ancient times here there was discussion where an essay contest, judged by current members, would be employed to determine the suitability of prospective members. I had a three word unoriginal essay in mind which rhymed exactly with "Go Fuck Yourself".
The model, as it were, seems to work. A flow of newer members introduce energy relieving or perhaps dissolving the ossification of older members.

Looks like I was number 20 on that day... I can remember where I was when Kennedy was shot, where I was on 9/11, and where I was sitting when I signed up for MetaFilter.
I've disabled the account two or three times, but always came back (for now, you might get lucky again!).
None of my cats were born yet, nor my dog.
I've purchased two houses, moved twice, quit one job, started two others (and a new career). I've been sued, got divorced, got remarried, was in a movie, became a grandfather, learned how to kayak and fly-fish, got my first iPad, my first iPhone, my first MacAir.
I started wearing grownup clothes to work (instead of jeans and a tee-shirt like I had worn for about 50 years), I bought a Harley, rode it for 6 years without ever dropping it, and then sold it.
And, along the way, posted 9,000+ comments and made 164 FPP's that weren't deleted (andgmod knows how many that were nuked).
I'm holding you all responsible for every one of those data points above. Send checks, notes of appreciation, the phone number for your attorney, and an apology to my MeMail account.

The contribution index tracks how many posts each user has made overall. By comparing that number to the one on your profile page, you can determine how many posts you've made that have been deleted.
So (for example) the CI says I've made 683 posts to the Blue, but my profile shows 665. 18 deleted posts. To find your page, simply substitute your own user number in the URL: http://dan.hersam.com/mefi_contrib_index.php?userid=______
You can see all of your posts, including the deletions, by using the infodumpster. Simply go to the "Posts" section, type your name into one of the four "Which posts by _____" fields and hit enter. You'll get a list of all of your posts, and the titles showing strikethrough text have been deleted.

I'm very late to the party, but I'm also pretty young, so it's good I didn't sign up then on account of me being a stupid-ass teenager back then. It would've been way embarrassing. It's bad enough that I post while drinking sometimes.

Mefi has been a big part of me mellowing out and not taking shit personally, or just sidestepping shitstorms instead of wading in, guns blazing.

According to the Timeline, signups were turned off sometime after 9/11 (when Mefi really got popular), then re-opened for limited signups in July 2002, then closed again in November 2002. IIRC there was some bug that let people sign up through some kind of backdoor for awhile, but I can't recall when that was.

One interesting aspect of $5 signups is that, while Metafilter entered its own Eternal September, it seems to me like usernumbers and the concept of "noobs" became less and less important to the community (which is a good thing IMO).
