Nothing is "Fee Free" around here, it's $5 for everyone, just like in town.

unless you're a member of the Cabal, of course.

That was like reading the same post in two alternate universes.

I agree that "first post wins" is somewhat arbitrary, and as with so many things it's not a hard-and-fast rule as far as I can tell. We talked a little about this here (in the context of longer-ish timeframes).

It's tough because the alternative is to have the mods make editorial decisions, which we basically don't do outside of whether will work for Metafilter regardless of its doubleness, and technical/display issues. That seems like a short path to madness to me.

So yeah I wasn't happy to delete Rhaomi's post, thanks empath for greenlighting the switcheroo.

Thanks to nat for bringing the science in that thread. I still have no idea what's going on but maybe I'm a wee bit closer to having a clue.

Maybe folk are using the contact form more nowadays? I'm using it more rather than posting frequently on MetaTalk (which a mod gently pointed out I was doing a few months back). Finding it far easier on the mind and soul to get frank and detailed - but fair - feedback from one or two mods in my inbox, rather than frank and perhaps not always fair feedback from 10,000 highly articulate nerds on MetaTalk.

I have not looked at any hard data but I think there might be a skosh of this going on, yeah.

Fixed, thanks for the catch.

Screw up
Moderation error

It's a little thing I guess but, fwiw, a terse presentation like this is one of the less friendly-to-us ways to say "hey I think something went weird here/needs a look/etc". I wouldn't walk up to a coffee shop counter and complain about confusion about a drink order that way, and I'm actually paying for that. I may just be grumpy this morning or something, but it's the kind of thing that puts me on edge from word one of a Metatalk post.

You have to admit that things are slipping around here. The last time I used the contact form, I had to wait almost ONE WHOLE MINUTE to have something cheerfully fixed that I screwed up.

I considered variants on "Kernel panic" or "Abort, Retry, Fail?" but nothing jumped out at me. I clearly should've taken a bit more time with the meta to actually make a coherent joke.

Yes, that was brusque. It's not a race and you aren't limited to 140 characters here.

You might have at least added ABORT, RETRY, FAIL?

Technically the Amplituhedron has countably many dimensions.

Also, isn't it weird how if you repeat the word Amplituhedron over and over again it stops seeming like it means anything?

What is the all-time record?

The record was set in August 2001 when MetaTalk went 15.3 days (1,328,819 seconds if that's easier) without a post. This is a special case because Matt shut the site down during that time to go on vacation.

A 10.9 day (944,606 second) gap occurred in August 2000 between the 23rd and September 3rd. The site could have been shut down then too, I'm not sure.

So if we're looking at the modern era after 2002 when the site doesn't shut down, the record is 6.1 days (532,563 seconds) achieved in February 2004 between the 10th and 16th.

That's followed by:

August 2003: 3.4 days (290,499 seconds)
November 2002: 3.3 days (282,627 seconds)
November 2003: 3.1 days (275,624 seconds)
September 2012: 2.9 days (250,010 seconds)
May 2013: 2.9 days (249,010 seconds)
May 2011: 2.7 days (232,074 seconds)

The gap we just experienced was pretty close to these. It was 2.6 days (222,694 seconds).

Looks like that Feb. 2004 stretch was due to technical difficulties. Remember when MeFi was in someone's apartment?
posted by Rock Steady at 10:19 AM on September 19, 2013

ah, good catch. I think that makes August 2003 the modern, naturally-occurring gap to break then.
posted by pb (staff) at 10:22 AM on September 19, 2013

There are MetaFilter posts at the end of August 2000, and there doesn't appear to be any hint of MetaTalk technical difficulties during that almost 11-day gap, so it appears to be a natural occurrence. It's such an extreme outlier that it does seem to demand some other explanation. In any case, I think it's fine to call that the "pre-modern" record, with 3.4 days being the current modern mark. Also interesting that almost all of the top few gaps are either very early in MeFi history or fairly recent.

I can't wait until "Vintage Meta Filter" re-enactors start re-creating 20th Century MeFi threads on strictly period hardware and software, even going so far as to rebuild long-dead links so that the threads will be forever preserved as they originally operated.
