Eurovision posts May 13, 2013 5:51 PM Subscribe
I had a huge Eurovision post written and ready to post that I was saving for this evening. Then this was posted. I do feel a bit frustrated by this, but it's a good post, just not the post I wanted to make. Details inside.
That post is a great discussion of what Eurovision is.
But it's missing two important details that I feel should be in a MeFi Eurovision post: a clean list of the year's songs sorted by semi-final and a link to the streaming video of the contest on the official website.
I'm apprehensive about posting another thread about Eurovision right on the wake of this one - especially since we've had a higher-than-normal level of discussion of the contest this year - but, dangit, the contest is important to me (for reasons that don't preclude my making a post about it) and I'd like to see a Eurovision post with at least a link to the streaming video.

Make it in the comments. I've had this happen and usually get it in quickly in the comments. You're a bit late for an early admission, but I'd still go for it.

You're in luck! We have recently added commenting to the site. I understand people sometimes even read them.

Yes! Please add many well-organized Eurovision details and links. They'd be super helpful to have all in one place, along with the discussion, because this is the most exciting part of the yeeeear!

Post it in the existing thread. New for this year, the chat server up and running for Eurovision.

Personal moment of panic/dread over; seeing that a post or a comment of mine is the subject of a MetaTalk thread, it's "Oh no. Oh no no no. Crap. What have I done bad and am going to get destroyed by the community over it?" Feeling a bit nervous-sick, reading the post; but, yeah, actually agree a good bit with you, LSK. Backtracking for context...
Took a morning to do the post, which was a case of trying to work out what to include and leave out. I was trying to provide lots of context, and one-click sources to further information, to minimize the number of further questions, especially from non-European MeFites. One of the links above the fold was to deliberately minimize any potential derail into I/P territory (as the former are an entrant).
Did contemplate putting in a link to the web TV, but decided to go with a link above the fold (2nd of only two) to the official website, as it's a clear website with easy routes to the TV, plus to all the songs and lots of other stuff. On reflection, a short paragraph with some info and links about TV and online options across the world may have been better. Eurovision is pretty much a global thing now.
Posted the FPP, with the usual internal dilemmas, first of all about title, then about tags. Then did the Cortex-advised thing of going away for an hour or so and not thinking about your post or what people are commenting (best FPP advice ever). Then realized I'd messed up the title and forgot to mention 'Eurovision', so asked the mods (who must be sick to death of my use of the comment form by now). Lobstermitten cheerily added it (thanks).
Then realized it would have been better, more self-contained and complete, to have listed the videos for each country, which would have made for a better post - yep, you're right, LSK. Had usual inner rage / self-loathing about being a not skilled Internet resource cataloger. Thankfully, bjrn did this as an excellent comment.
Fiancee, who lurks and watches me on here but isn't yet a member, then pokes fun at my MetaPostingFrustration.
Just saw your excellent comment. Ah, really like the 'notable songs that aren't in the final' section. That's a really good thing, and lots more content to absorb; wish had thought of that.
Also saw your comment from a few days back about having a post lined up, and felt a bit bad. Been on both sides of this (posted, and beaten to it), constructing an FPP for a known forthcoming event. So know how you feel, and the two dilemmas of this kind of post: how much effort to put in, and how long before the known event happens should someone put up an FPP.
(LSK, if we meet up, I will stand you a drink. For you, alcohol will indeed be free.)

I'm glad to hear your side. I was definitely a bit more frustrated over this two days ago than I'd like to have been, and it's refreshing to remember that we're both here to share the contest and its excitement with people. Onward to the first semi-final!

Your comment is a noisy, offensive derail that breaks the guidelines. Could a mod please somehow happen upon this and review what chavenet said for appropriateness?

Was most of the discussion in the chatroom? I couldn't view the thread live, and was hoping there'd be more comments to catch up on.

Yes, there was some amusing banter on MetaFilter Chat. Twitter was large on Eurovision, even for a semi-final. The second of which is thursday evening (Europe) / afternoon (US).

I am torn between going to a bar and watching it in rural Holland or hiding out in a random coffeeshop and watching it I suppose every TV in the nation will have it on?

If you're only gonna watch one Eurovision video this year, make it this one.

I know. I feel a bit cheated without the blow by blow snark. We have major time constraints at my house so we have only just watched the Semis (and we will probably watch the finals next Sat.) I was looking forward to reading the enthusiastic cheering and booing but I see it has all gone to MetaChat. Too bad.
