Congratulations Maias December 6, 2012 12:03 PM Subscribe
Congratulations to Metafilter's own Maias are once again in order. She is a noted drug addiction and recovery specialist, who won the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology's media award Monday night.
AWESOME!
One of the best things about her work: how accessible it is to lay readers. She's one of a select group of journalists that are true experts at translating studies / medical information into consumer-oriented articles that can be easily understood, related to and absorbed by the average newspaper, magazine or website reader. That's a skill which many medical reporters aspire to, but is difficult to achieve consistently.
She couldn't be more deserving. Congratulations, Maias!

Congratulations! I remember reading one of her books (Help at Any Cost, perhaps?) and then realizing she was a MeFite. I love seeing her articles pop up all over the Intarwebs, and I have noticed that she is a boon to whatever thread she posts in. Well deserved, indeed!

Congratulations! I was just admiring her excellent rebuttal to that Lori Gottlieb New York Times magazine piece about how therapists need to brand themselves.

That's so great! I had the great pleasure of meeting her at the holiday benefit for a local harm-reduction org a while back.
Congratulations!

"It wasn't until I started studying the science that I really understood it. And it outraged me that this information wasn't more widely available since our policies and treatments are often based on practices that are harmful or counterproductive—as shown by the science."
As an ex-substance addict and present addictive personality, I am thrilled by this statement. Thank you so very much.

I mean, as fellow MeFites, I'm not going to say we helped her win this award, but I'm not going to say we didn't help. So, you're welcome, Maias.
Seriously though, awesome work in a complicated field. Kudos!

oh wow, thanks everyone!!!! Your support really means a lot— it gets very lonely writing this stuff sometimes and it is great to be part of the Mefi community. Truly honored.
