Lies, Liars, and Politicians: Let the debates begin! October 3, 2012 5:28 AM Subscribe
In previous election debates, we have occasionally had a thread where live-blogging the event happened. Those threads are often entertaining and informative, but I'm not sure it's something the mods want on the front page. In anticipation of tonight's debate, and the likely liveblogging thereupon, would it be better to create a metatalk or other off-blue thread for said event?

Let's not forget about the 4,000+ thread from two weeks ago about Romney's 47% comment. Working together, the way a community should, we can turn that post into the one with the most comments ever and test your computer processing speed at the same time.

The Yankee game is on at 7:05 on ESPN concurrently with the Orioles game on ESPN2 (or 3 or something). I doubt it can match last year's thrills for game 162, but there are at least 4 baseball games tonight that have meaningful significance for the playoffs. Much more entertaining than two politicians talking over each other and spinning their shit for a few hours, then each claiming they did better than expected. Besides, Gary E. Johnson is the man for whom to vote.

I always get a bit of a chuckle about these sorts of requests. I thought everyone knew that the way to do this was to create a thread about some aspect of the thing you are going to want to chat about a day or so in advance. You want it to be a solid post, so maybe marshal some good links ahead of time if need be, but then once the thread is open and going smoothly, you can chat away to your heart's content. I think we managed to keep the same Doctor Who discussion going all season this way. It's like longboating, but with a purpose.

What my coworkers said. If there's a new thread on the blue that's a decent post and a natural fit for debate chatter, debate chatter will coalesce there. If not, there's older threads; the terrible monster is still creaking along and using a half-broken thread to document a half-broken debate system seems oddly thematically encouraging to me if it comes to that.
Starting a new cheeseball "this is a thread for the debates la la la" thread with is a bad idea. Starting one in metatalk is a worse idea. We ask nicely that people don't.

I've got links! I've been putting them in the "47%" thread, which, I think, is too big to usefully serve as a 'debate' thread.
Also, if a 'debate thread' starts, it can serve for all four debates!

This is bullshit. Teddy needs to win at the Nats first home Divisional Series game, to which I have tickets, and not some bullshit 1:00 PM Wednesday game that will probably include Chad Tracy starting. My wife will even be there in her customized Teddy jersey I got her for her birthday.
This just makes sense.

Last year I finally got around to replacing the decrepit 2003-era AMD K7 Barton-based system that I had been using with something a little more modern, which mercifully cuts through the Romney thread like a knife through hot butter, so I have no objections to that remaining the primary thread. But I still have sympathy for those on older systems or mobile devices, and if a new thread does materialize then so be it. However, I'd rather not monitor two threads, so if a new one does appear can we please wrangle everyone out of the old one?

I sometimes wish I could follow a thread that I like reading, but I don't really have anything I want to say in. Perhaps whatever I'd have said has been well said already, perhaps I find the topic fascinating but lack expertise, perhaps I'd like to read answers to a question precisely because I don't know the answer, and therefore have nothing to say in the AskMe thread.
Is there any way to do that, other than throwing in some comment just for the sake of getting the thread into my Recent Activity?

Perhaps whatever I'd have said has been well said already, perhaps I find the topic fascinating but lack expertise, perhaps I'd like to read answers to a question precisely because I don't know the answer, and therefore have nothing to say in the AskMe thread.
Is there any way to do that, other than throwing in some comment just for the sake of getting the thread into my Recent Activity?

In anticipation of tonight's debate, and the likely liveblogging thereupon, would it be better to create a metatalk or other off-blue thread for said event?
Off-blue would be good. Reddit for example.

Oh well. I'll save mine for another time rather than over-debate-thread the place up. :)

If you favorite the thread you can follow it under the "My Favorites" tab in Recent activity. Here's a direct link to that tab.

No, there isn't. (You can find a lot of talk about this in MetaTalk threads.) This is the pony I keep asking for. I occasionally throw in such a comment, but I feel bad about it.

I'm pretty sure this is why the new debate thread filled up with a bunch of comments right away- people wanted to get it in their Recent Activity in anticipation of tonight's extravaganza.
At least that would be what I did.

Thanks for the tip. It's not ideal that I have to remember to look in two places, but at least it's an approximation to what I was looking for. Will give it a try.

How strange.
Pretty much all the mods have weighed in that they would rather have an existing thread massively derailed, than accept the existence of a liveblog-type thread?
I usually consider debates a waste of time, but this one? Holy shit! Listen to these two go!
But, wouldn't want to sully the Blue? Okay... See y'all on just about any other news/blog site out there.

What? No. What we said was that there is always a liveblog thread that appears but it has to, nominally, be about something other than just "go liveblog!" Here is it. It's fun.

Metafilter has slowed to a crawl, period, for me. And I'm getting lots of these:
-----
Server Error
The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.
Application server is busy. Either there are too many concurrent requests or the server still is starting up.
-----
I wonder if there is something going on tonight that really isn't what this site was designed for.
