Maybe I'm just smarting because I was in the midst of composing a thoughtful comment when this thread got shut down.
Or maybe I feel like when I posted about hockey I got a lot of "why do we care". But when this thread about football is okay but that first one about hockey isn't, I'm starting to wonder.

I did read it. I guess I felt like that the stuff compiled in the link as a reference to the NPR link and the study wasn't necessarily a bad thing. But I defer to cortex, obviously.

I think the problem with that thread was that the real meat of the story is paywalled, and the rest is just original info -- which isn't okay -- meant to rebut said paywalled meat. There was a really epic post about soccer a few years ago with a ton of YouTube video examples and so on, but, IIRC, the main link it revolved around was paywalled as well and it got canned, too.
As far as the gripers, it's almost inevitable that sports threads bring out the folks carrying a load of baggage marked PROPERTY OF JFK HIGH SCHOOL PHYS ED. DEPT.

I'm totally into the various politics and prejudices of sports officiating especially w/r/t interactions with race (in fact, I often think I am the only person to be skulking around with my Marxist hat and glasses on in discussions about, like, the standardization of strike zones and defenseless receivers, except for maybe Dave Zirin?), and there is totally a good post to be made about penalty minutes in the NHL right now (Shea Weber! Raffi Torres! WHITHER THE SHANABAN?!), but this was a link to a bad study behind a paywall and some back-of-the-envelope wiki research below the fold, dude, come on. If you make your own hockey penalty post, I'll come talk in it (what a prize!), even.

Seems like a good deletion, though the NPR article is interesting to me as a hockey fan. They also mention that a similar study was done in the NFL, with similar results.

I agree that this is a good deletion reason and that you must be smarting from for other reasons unrelated to this post (be it the sports connection or the comment you didn't get to make), so I should be 'meh' about this callout.
But whenever somebody says "GYOB", for a second, I always thinking that it's some sort of weird Arrested Development reference I don't remember until I remember what it stands for. And for some reason, my stupidity makes me happy. So in the end, I'm all for this call out.

What the hell is hockey??
It's the goddamn nation religion of Canada, that's what it is. And I'm a non-believer... I'll say it: I do not care to watch hockey, talk about hockey, hear about hockey, or, most of all see the stupid flags people fly from their cars during playoff time.
Even though I haven't said anything nasty about the game itself, saying these thoughts aloud will generating menacing stares in Canada.
And now my eldest son has become a convert. Thank god the Pens are out of the series, thank god the Canucks are out of the series (and likely won't be in another series for a good long time).
I can now go back to contemplating baseball, a wholly more refined, intellectual sport where no one cares one lick if you say you hate or love it.

What the hell is hockey? It's the natural evolution of both Canada's and the United States' only surviving indigenous sport. Baseball? Football? Please. Hockey was played here long before Europeans ever arrived, though it is possible people of the First Nations saw Vikings playing something similar and they worked on it together. Hockey is America's heritage sport.

Except if you did that or anyone else they'd be copying the data that wensink put in the post which was basically either original research or in the paywalled article (I couldn't see the paywalled article) and is, unfortunately, the third "This seems a little GYOB-ish" deletion for this poster. I thought it was an interesting NPR bit but the rest of it pushed it into something that is more personal and maybe not really right for MeFi. I mean we're not Wikipedia so there isn't strictly a "No original research" moratorium here, but I did get the feeling that the bulk of the post wasn't "something cool you found on the internet" but a lot more like "here are my thoughts regarding this story and this paywalled article" which is less great.

Hockey is more regional than a lot of other sports. I grew up in New England where hockey was srs bzns. One of my neighbors went on to play for the Bruins and two of the guys I went to high school with were hockey Olympians. Kids where I live now in Vermont often go to hockey camp and we have a town rink that is maintained right along with the town baseball field and the town swimming pool. We sing hockey songs. Everyone owns skates. This has been true for friends of mine from Michigan and Wisconsin as well, but I guess it's a lot less prevalent in the south.

Yeah, I'm conflating lacrosse and hockey a bit to make a rhetorical point (natural evolution), but they are pretty closely related. And it does seem, to me anyway, much more North Americian than the so-called popular sports. Just trying to defend the only sport I was ever any good at from all the haters.

I will totally admit that lacrosse and hockey differ in the whole ice thing. Skating is clearly a new wrinkle. But I don't concede that it wasn't played on ice before Montreal brought skating to it. Also the two sports are both rooted in a warrior culture. And a cool curved stick.

I think that's partially the answer to hockey's regionalism, too, btw. Half of the USA doesn't freeze in the winter, so there's nowhere to shinny. I would say the other half is how flipping expensive it is, both for individual players and for schools that have to insure a bunch of 15-year-olds trying to kill each other while traveling 157 (approx) miles per hour. I live in a place where everything does freeze, and my (poor) home county has no hockey culture, but the rich-ish county next door has mad hockey.

The puck was usually, but not always a roll of black electrical tape. The sticks were indeed hockey sticks, but usually worn down to the point that the blade was maybe an inch high. When a kid bought a new stick it was an amazing thing. he was then the goalie. Cause, big blade, ya know? And you know what else? A roll of electrical tape, propelled by a powerful point blank slap shot, could knock out a tooth.

I love hockey! My best friend and I spent a lot of time in high school (in New Hampshire) going to college hockey games, sitting above the penalty box and mercilessly mocking the players who had to sit in it. Since we were 15-year-old girls, we were perhaps less intimidating to these college hockey players than they could have been, but I suppose we may have struck a different kind of fear into their hearts?

Oh, I don't actually disagree with you - like all kids' sports, it can be as expensive as poser parents want to make it, and - unlike basketball - the fundamental piece of equipment is not available for $3 at the dollar store.
I actually have no dog in this fight, because I'm not a sports person. (Not that there aren't sports I like less than others - any game that takes more than a calendar day is a lifestyle change, not a sport. Cricket, I would be looking at you except I fell into a coma yesterday during the first innings.)

I have an Irish friend who says that ice hockey "is the hurley for little girls." He will say this to actual minor league hockey players, too. And then kick their asses at the hurley the next afternoon. That hurley shit is fucked up.

You aren't going to believe this, but as a kid we played "hand hurley". My friend Gerard (Irish kid, duh) was a big hurley fan. We played it with a handball in my backyard. The point of the game seemed to be that you'd bounce a ball in your hand and Gerard would knock the shit out of you. It didn't catch on, for some reason.

It's called hurling. Calling it hurley is like calling ice hockey, "stick."
And I bet they transfer WAY better to hurling then he does to ice hockey. (It is a very fast sport though.)

My brother learned something about what to wear to hockey games. Specifically, don't wear an Islanders Suck shirt to an Islander game. He came home with a busted lip, bruises and one less shirt.

Hockey was the reason I lived and breathed and the worst day of my life was the day the doctor told me I could never play hockey again because I broke my femur playing fucking football of all things.
I wasn't even particularly good at it, and my parents could only afford shitty used and handmedown equipment - but damn if I didn't love the violence of the game.
Anyway, one Friday night I spent the night at my friend Alex's house. We farted around all night playing Atari and sneaking his stepdad's beers from the basement fridge. Alex fell asleep somewhere around 3, but I stayed up. Anyway, as dawn began to gather, I thought I'd go down to the river. It had been cold as hell that year, but no real snow yet - and that meant that part of the St. Louis river was smooth as glass. So I got my skates and set out.
I had never skated so fast in my life. Not being bound by the boards meant I could go just as fast as my legs would let me and in the brisk morning air, I was positively flying. I had gone 4-5 miles before I began to get cold and turned back; stopping just long enough to watch the sun come up over Spirit Lake and the small island where I shot my first duck when I was 9.
I still love hockey, but it's hard for me to watch. I'd so much rather play, but I can't skate now because of the injury that stupid day when I was 16. Stupid football.
If there had been a computer game club, I would have been doing that instead.

OK, but in all seriousness it is super frustrating when that happens. I was actually thinking about posting a MeTa thread about that issue (not hockey) since it happened to me last night in AskMe.
Matt, pb et al. - a pony request - maybe the form submission script could spit out what you were trying to post when you submit a comment on a thread that is closed? Because you generally can't get what you wrote by clicking "back" in that situation. To be clear, I'm not suggesting MeFi maintain a permanent record of that, but instead of just disappearing it to /dev/null, maybe just a text box labeled "here's what you were trying to post"? Then you could send it via MeMail or whatever if relevant.
Seriously, I know that losing a long comment you wrote is not the worst thing in the world, but it would be so easy to make it salvagable for those times when it is useful.

Works off ice as well. It's an effective way to neutralize an opponent without having to actually hurt him. Used it more than once when I was cab driver. Drunks.

the fundamental cost is skates. Everything else is optional.
Even skates are optional. I played a bit of hockey growing up, but I played a lot more street hockey. You do need some beaten up sticks to play, but beyond that all you need is a ball of some kind and a few backpacks to set up as goal posts.

I just want to say that looking back on that Kovalchuk thread I was totally right and the guy is playing really well now in New jersey, so nyah!
Also any paper that argues the Bruins get penalized because of the color of their shirts rather than the style of hockey they play is bunk.
