New comments since last visit in Chrome is funky March 10, 2012 3:56 PM   Subscribe

Is there weirdness occurring with the "new since last visit" numbers on the front page in Chrome?

I'm showing different numbers in Chrome (v. 17.0.963.79) and Firefox/Safari. In Chrome the number of comments=comments since last visit, but only since late this morning. Mac OSX.6.8.

A mod will show up to confirm this, I guess, but the long and short of it is: those numbers are not accurate, and never have been. Nor is it likely they will ever be, because it's difficult to do without having the server load baloon rapidly. We've had a bunch of threads about this before. Basically: not broken, just never was really accurate.

Oh, and the specific answer to your question is probably that those numbers are based on session, not visiting threads; so obviously a different session in a different browser will show different numbers.

... and P.S., Chrome, is that a version number or an IP address? WTF?
Thanks koeselitz; I neglected to do sufficient due diligence for previous MeTa threads on the subject. Yet I don't recall ever having this issue before today. I'm also showing different behavior on different computers, the newest & most updated (as well as least-used for Mefi) of them being the only one exhibiting this behavior.

Yeah, pb is moving house this weekend so he's not around as much as he usually would be, but the numbers are session based and will vary depending on the browser you're using. They're intended to be a best guess and maybe more useful for people who are here less frequently. Here is an old comment from pb explaining how this feature is supposed to work.
