Missed MeFi Connection: me: This guy. you: The MeFite on the crew who recognized my shirt and let me get a picture of the Daily Show set and Jon Stewart's pen.

Just wanted to say thanks!

Context: I wore my MeFi shirt to the taping and the warmup guy joked about me wearing a shirt for "a website nobody goes to." Felt like I may have made a mistake, but then it paid off.

Nice! Yeah, I've gotten the odd email here and there from people that worked as PAs, writers, etc on the Daily Show before. I've always wanted to visit the show (and I'm in NYC next week! Mystery DS Staff that are also MeFi members, ping me!).

OK, now I want Missed MeFi Connections to be a thing. Or at least a MetaTalk category.

There was like this week of me randomly running into Jon_Evil for unrelated reasons.

If I had thought about my username for any length of time, instead of just picking the same one I use everywhere, I would have been 'smoked duck prosciutto'.

What! I want a shirt! Are shirts still available? I'd like to wear one to tapings of Ellen and BBT.

I'll wear mine the next time I'm starring in an episode of Breaking Bad, it'll be a hoot.

You can almost see the back of my head in the Mad Men pilot.

Anyway, I say we game the system and try for an all Mefite Daily Show audience.

I have a MetaFilter t-shirt AND a shirt for the damn-near-forgotten-spinoff-site-started-when-registration-was-closed MonkeyFilter (it's a USBanana!) If you want people to comment about you wearing a shirt for "a website nobody goes to", it works very well for me. Well, that's a really nice picture of you, Tim, but now I'm wondering about the picture of the pen and why you're choosing not to share it with us. *sniff*

How did this turn into a thread of shirt requests? All you people are threadshirting.

Also: how can I get a shirt?
posted by Red Loop at 6:58 PM on March 10, 2012 [1 favorite]

For those of you wondering where to get blue shirts, we sold them in I think 2008, they are pretty much no longer around. We made some a couple years ago, and might make more in the future. I guess jump to the latest MetaTalk thread if you have ideas for something to put on a new one.

And I heard from the anonymous member, they asked me to put some backstory here:
I was the guy on the crew who was bowled over when the warmup guy picked Tim out of the crowd...I was sitting there making fun of him (the warmup guy, who is....well, I'll reserve my judgement in this space) on headset when he said "What is a metafilter?"

I was immediately like "Wha-wha-wha???" I came around the side of the set and immediately picked the shirt out of the crowd of >150. Needless to say I was blown away.

I waved them down after the show and said something incredibly dumb and awkward like "hey, I'm from Metafilter too. I'd really like you to get a pic in your Mefi shirt on set." Security didn't see me with him, so when he walked over, he almost got jumped! I felt pretty bad. But it all worked out in the end.

That's a great story. I wish we could function as a secret society more often. Even though nobody knows you're a dog on the internet, the flipside is nobody knows you're a MeFite in real life. Unless you're wearing your shirt. And, let's face it, you can't wear the same shirt every day.
posted by Miko at 10:31 PM on March 10, 2012 [1 favorite]

And even then... I don't wear my MetaFilter shirt to work, even on Fridays. Do not cross those streams, I figure...

I once figured out that a long-time acquaintance was a MeFite because he made a casual joke about cats getting stuck in scanners.
posted by colfax at 1:22 PM on March 11, 2012

Oh come on. That joke's older than metafilter. There even used to be a website.
posted by cjorgensen at 2:58 PM on March 11, 2012

Yeah, but I don't think that a lot of people have that joke in the forefront of their brains anymore. At any rate, the guy made a joke about cats in scanners, and I said, "Wait, do you read Metafilter?" Turned out he did.
