The background of MeFi Projects sings to me February 2, 2012 2:09 PM   Subscribe

Is there any way to make the background color of one page apply to the others? Or different themes beyond default and plain?

The MeFi Projects page makes me eyes overflow with happy tears whereas the others kind of wear on me if I look at them very long. The closest I came was finding one of two choices for theme in preferences: plain or default.

Two main options exist.

1. There is the plain theme which makes everything white, as you've seen
2. You can use something like Stylish which will let you edit the CSS for the pages and you could totally do something like you describe. You can get plug-ins from sites like userstyles if you don't know CSS yourself. There are a few MetaFilter styles there, not sure which ones of them work.

Opera has the Include CSS extension. I use it to add some margins and increase the line-height on the front page; makes it easier to read texts.

I use greasemonkey for this. It's awesome.

I was just joking, though you did get my hopes up for a hot second there.

I would really like the "Make it Start" button reinstated.

The professional white background goes with everything. Except it's really bright in a dark room.

If you use Firefox and install NoSquint, you can easily override any site's text color, background color and link color choices with your own, as well as optionally disabling background images.

This seems like something Evernote Clearly could help with!

I want my profile page to play Hip Hug-Her by Booker T and the MGs when you view it, but only when I am drunk. Is that doable?

Somewhat related:

I was looking at Ask today at work and it looked really... bold.

Like the white text was super white and seemed slightly larger or bolded. Every other website looked the same. The text size in my browser hadn't changed. It doesn't look like that on other computers. It was odd.

Sounds like somebody has been fiddling with your monitor buttons. Some monitors have sharpness controls in various forms, with various stupid whizzbang marketroid names; generally if you turn those on, they screw up text something shocking.

I just wish Matt would finally spring for High Definition. All my other web sites look so much crisper and life-like.

The background of Projects is the one that makes my eyes hurt. Odd that.

Pfft, you don't know how good you have it. The original background for Projects was a vivid, bloody red that I genuinely loved, but everybody was all "oh no, my retinas, I need them to watch The Wire" and so we ended up in compromiseville.

Maybe I'll change the background color of the Infodump to that. It's my baby, I can make it as ugly as I like.

I was crushed when I was tricked into abandoning my cranberry red profile page. While a dump of any kind is not extremely flattering, at least a nice, red infodump would be something. Sniffle.

Oh, man, that old Projects red is awesome as hell. I wholeheartedly support making it the Infodump color.

I just realized I've been using "professional white" for so long that I have no idea what color mefi projects is.

That red is awesome and you people who complained about it are just horrible.

Is there a way to force a style sheet to install in Safari Stylish that I'm not seeing?

546. Pat Sajak squeezes out a tiny tear. The amount of effort required is theatrically absurd - you'd think he'd be budding off a clone with all of that pushing and flexing and gnashing of teeth. But no, the comical end result is a single tear, immediately indistinguishable from the beads of sweat that were involved in its production. The front of his shirt is matted in sweat, the top of his lederhosen will certainly develop a white salt stain when they dry. The lobster frolics in the bubble spiral, still just beyond his grasp. Mocking him.
