I heard someone say it the other day. Christmas, being officially the celebration of the alleged savior's birth (and less officially a celebration of the sun's return to our days -- in the Northern Hemisphere at least), has become a sort of ad-hoc celebration of all that lets us feel safe and secure (note the small "s" on secure). So no, it's not about Homeland Security, border guards, cops patrolling our streets, it's about celebrating the functional aspects of our families, communities, associations -- the people we love and trust.

Cobwebs are excellent for leavening. Your pie will be light as a feather. Feathers are also excellent leavening, but tend to stick in your teeth, and may make your gums giggle.

I had a short zen-like voyage through the grocery store this morning picking up pie ingredients and provisions for a couple friends coming to visit; I was in no hurry and had a nice endorphin rush from a brisk walk in the cold, and I felt almost like an observer from another universe, weaving placidly through the throng of tense-looking shoppers, picking up my items with a sense of quiet confidence that they would still be where I was reaching for them even if I declined to literally snatch at them.
At one point my entrance to an aisle was blocked by a mute confrontation between two octogenarians' carts, both of them trying to move into the lane. I waited, the problem resolved itself, I got my pecans.

rtha, the stuff is mandatory for my mother too. (Gack.) I think after the holiday I will buy a few cans, which of course means I will forget I have them for years until The Next Big Storm hits and then I'll have a fantastic AskMe about hurricane generators and Should I Eat That?
I realized I forgot to get the family traditional New Year's lucky 'food': vodka and marinated herring. This means I will keep forgetting until New Year's Eve, when I will find myself standing lost in the liquor store clutching a jar of pickled fish. Terviseks! Aurgh!

I want to join in thanking the founder, mods and all the folk who post and comment here for the quality and quantity of information and deliberation available at this elegant virtual salon. I am glad, too, that this site is always so much more salon-like than saloon-like and, despite the occasional outcropping of drunken raillery, the wit and charm here are often quite delightful. (Actually, sometimes the raillery, wit and charm coalesce spectacularly within a single line.) This place is fun.

The store was weirdly empty. I was expecting some kind of hurricane season 12-hours-to-landfall frenzy, and instead.... it was damn near deserted.
The most desolate sight I've ever seen in a grocery store was a single completely looted sun cream shelf in Galway on a sunny day. It had the contents of neighbor shelves scattered about it, remnants of people's frantic search for misplaced extras.
There was something alluring about the emptiness amid the plenty. A hollow home for the emptiness of your soul.
Also, Merry Christmas!

It would have all been so much harder if I had to go it alone. And this says nothing of all the awesome stuff I learned, new perspectives I gained, laughs I had, beers I've drank at many meet-ups. Aw, shucks.

I am somewhat horrified and also quite curious. The candy cane and pumpkin spice ones sort of I can imagine, but eggnog is so much about texture that it's hard to think about it in seltzer. Is it non-awful?

Davis & Big Bend, cameras in tow) and then, I am going to go into the kitchen and have me some Whole Foods Cherry Pie.
I've managed to finagle my schedule to where I have to work exactly one day over the next ten, and it's only costing me three days PTO. Oh, and Spurs season opener, arena level tix on Monday. Basketball is back, and Duncan is healthy and rested. Woot!
My life is full of consumerist goodness, and welling up from this nigh-abysmal font of plenty, I feel a great sense of gratitude & satisfaction, however fleeting, so seriously -- merry Christmas, alla yous.

Well dang you all. There I was nestled all snug in my bed when I suddenly felt the need for some cider. Cider that pops its cork like champagne. Really potent hand-pressed cider. Really tasty, immediate-tipsy-making cider. Cider that you have to open in the sink because it makes Old Faithful lok like a slutty sporty spring. There are lots of freshly cleaned china sitting by the sink. And there are two cats who are mortally wounded they aren't getting fed again tring to kill me by tripping me and then blaming my death on a pre-drunken stupor.
Thanks!

The Potate and I celebrated xmas eve with a Victory at Sea. So delicious. Earlier that day a customer returned two $90 bottles of port (we both work liquor retail, and the customer was a giant idiot who didn't know how to open a port) Since the bottles couldn't be resold, they were decanted and put at the tasting bar for staff and customers alike to try. I have now been ruined for port. Damn rich people.

I think that's funny about the Christmas carols. We were at a party last week and I felt really awkward standing around singing with a bunch of strangers. Who I later found out were all in a professional choir together. Those old ladies have some pipes on them!

I've had a terrible year in which I needed much distracting. Metafilter all, I truly do thank you.

As brisk as bees, if not altogether as light as fairies, did the four
Pickwickians assemble on the morning of the twenty-second day of
December, in the year of grace in which these, their faithfully-recorded
adventures, were undertaken and accomplished. Christmas was close at
hand, in all his bluff and hearty honesty; it was the season of
hospitality, merriment, and open-heartedness; the old year was
preparing, like an ancient philosopher, to call his friends around
him, and amidst the sound of feasting and revelry to pass gently and
calmly away. Gay and merry was the time; and right gay and merry
were at least four of the numerous hearts that were gladdened by
its coming.
And numerous indeed are the hearts to which Christmas
brings a brief season of happiness and enjoyment. How many
families, whose members have been dispersed and scattered far
and wide, in the restless struggles of life, are then reunited, and
meet once again in that happy state of companionship and mutual
goodwill, which is a source of such pure and unalloyed delight;
and one so incompatible with the cares and sorrows of the world,
that the religious belief of the most civilised nations, and the rude
traditions of the roughest savages, alike number it among the
first joys of a future condition of existence, provided for the
blessed and happy! How many old recollections, and how many
dormant sympathies, does Christmas time awaken!
We write these words now, many miles distant from the spot
at which, year after year, we met on that day, a merry and joyous
circle. Many of the hearts that throbbed so gaily then, have
ceased to beat; many of the looks that shone so brightly then,
have ceased to glow; the hands we grasped, have grown cold; the
eyes we sought, have hid their lustre in the grave; and yet the old
house, the room, the merry voices and smiling faces, the jest,
the laugh, the most minute and trivial circumstances connected
with those happy meetings, crowd upon our mind at each
recurrence of the season, as if the last assemblage had been but
yesterday! Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the
delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the
pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the
traveller, thousands of miles away, back to his own fireside and
his quiet home!

Omg, best Xmas gift EVAR. The guy scheduled to be on call today had to leave town on a family emergency and, as one of the few saps who didn't have plane tickets, back up duty fell to me. Now, I've got a new baby, my three year old "gets" Christmas for the first time this year and we have tons of family flying in to see us. On top of that, I'm just coming off an 80 hour work week where I got slammed with sick people and the hospital is full. And just to put the icing on the cake, I broke my foot on Monday. I was pretty bummed about unexpectedly having to work today.
I get a page at 7 am this morning, it's one of my partners: "Hey, I spent the night in the hospital and woke up early and rounded on all the patients for you. Enjoy the day with your family. Merry Christmas."
Allison, I owe you big time, not just for a much needed day off, but for restoring my faith in the spirit of the season.

Merry christmases to all. we have spent the day eating chinese food, flying the husband's new radio controlled helicopter into the tree, the ceiling, the sofa, etc and and reading. And drinking. And then flying the helicopter into the tree by accident again. ;) All quiet days should be this enjoyable.
Best wishes to all and many thanks to the mods!

I just rocked my daughter's world when she asked if there was an estimate on what time Jesus was born by saying "sometime in March." She is 8 and goes to Catholic school. When I get the phone call from the principal next week, I will be thinking of all of MetaFilter. Because you bastards make me think and I'm turning it around on my kids.

ghughuism - a foul and hideous order who worship ghughu as their ghod. According to the researches of FooFoo scientists, ghughu is a beetle-bodied monster living on the sunward side of Vulcan, who telepathically controls a zombie named don wollheim, wollheim itself being usually regarded as ghughu by its followers.
Think about it.
(No, I don't actually know what this means; I found it here. But now I want to be a FooFoo scientist.)

One more party to host (turkey soup and ham sammiches for the diaspora who must return to their chosen states) and then all will be quiet. It's been a good xmas, everything is getting better for friends, realtions and yours truly. It's funny how sometime you ignore how bad things are getting but now looking back, whew!
Life is good and I truly appreciate and love you all.

My brother's family was with his in-laws for Christmas this year; they should be coming back fairly soon, at which point they will collect the presents I've left for them -- including the Elmo Guitar for my three-year-old niece. ....which came with the batteries already installed.
