Reddit vs Metafilter - London Oct 10th October 7, 2011 3:54 AM   Subscribe

Reddit has discovered that the London Mefites are going to a pub quiz at the Hat and Tun on 10th Oct, and are proposing to 'hand their asses to them', along with alien signs, hats, vuvuzelas, etc. The gauntlet has been thrown, Mefites, and we must respond with overwhelming pancakes.

I know that this sort of stuff is meant for IRL, but our reputation is at stake here, ladies and gentlemen. The stakes have risen.

You know what would make this even more interesting--World Series mayor bets between Matt and moot or whoever the hell it is runs Reddit. If they win, Metafilter has to adopt threaded comments, and if we win, Reddit has to institute a $5 membership fee.

Redditors are the kinds of people that go to bar trivia and then use their smartphones under the table.

Redditors once invaded my favorite local DC trivia night. It was confusing. They didn't win. But one team did manage to win the best team name, which is a popular vote. I think they self-clapped, which is verboten.

Good luck at the trivia night, folks!

However, I feel this post is a tacit admission that if you want more than a couple of people to see your IRL post, you make it in MeTa.
posted by zamboni at 6:42 AM on October 7, 2011 [2 favorites]

Not true - the IRL post had about 11 confirmed attendees and 6 maybes before I posted this. But a 'big' MeTa post does draw more attention, yes, but it can only be used in the most desperate of situations...
posted by adrianhon at 6:45 AM on October 7, 2011 [1 favorite]

There's no question that posting an IRL event in MetaTalk could be abused, but it clearly was not in this case. The cross-site rivalry aspect of the post is what makes it legitimate for MeTa, and interesting to someone like me, who can't possibly attend.

Yeah, I agree. I would not have known about this otherwise but now I'm finding it interesting and plan on following it. It would be awesome if this could somehow benefit a charity. Let the real challenge be who raises the most money.

DESTROY THEM. POLISH YOUR BOOTS IN THEIR BLOOD. CRUSH THEM AND SUCK THE MARROW FROM THEIR ROASTED BONES. PAVE THE ROADS WITH THE BURNT CINDERS OF THEIR VERY SOULS.

If you fail to utterly vanquish them, do not return to the land of bunnies and pancakes. You know what blood-price your shame will demand - for the narwhal bacons at midnight.

No, seriously. Nuke them from orbit. It really probably won't be that hard. The reddit userbase is really too young and too insulated to be any serious threat in a trivia match. Most of them don't even remember what life was like before Google and Wikipedia and having to actually remember things.

Yeah, I'm so popular. This is literally the first time I've ever interacted with reddit (except for that one time I followed the link to that I am a 100 year old grandma ask me anything thing linked from mefi), and it came about because HandfulOfDust memailed me about the concern that they might not be able to get a table so late in the game. So I went over there to be a nice guy...AND LOOK WHERE IT GOT ME. Apparently I am a stinkin' spy. (Ask me anything!)

I am also going to go kick some serious redditor ass with my adopted compatriots on Monday night.

I like the idea of a charity wager; each site/team member puts up a stake and the winning site gets to decide which charity it goes to. Not sure exactly how we'd organise this though...
posted by adrianhon at 11:25 AM on October 7, 2011

bondcliff - It would be awesome if this could somehow benefit a charity.

It's too late to organise for this quiz, but we should totally do this. Pick a future challenge (or series of challenges, ideally spread across several countries) and run something like:

1) Each website nominates a charity
2) Both communities raise cash that goes into a common pot (an account held by the admins of either MeFi or Reddit)
3) Teams compete to see whose nominated charity gets the cash
4) Glory, dispair, charitable giving, etc.

I'm guessing that people won't love the idea of leaving a donation feeling that random, so we'd probably want to do a split. Right from the start, say that 1/3 of the money is for charity A, 1/3 for charity B. The competition is over whose charity gets the final third. Or we could work out some funky formula to bias the split according to points differential, or something.

Any thoughts? Team Mod would probably have to be involved in some capacity, so what do you guys think?

jabberjaw - AND AN UNDERWORLD REFERENCE
While I hated that film, I did enjoy the protagonist's shiny trousers. Yum.

Once more unto the pub, dear friends, once more;
Or close the site up with our Mefite dead.
In posts there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of quiz blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the troller;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the trivia of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest Mefites.
Whose blood is fet from members of flame-proof!
Members that, like so many moderators,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And held their words for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your lurkers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to triv. And you, good Mefites,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your website; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Matty, Meta, and Cabal!'

Well, except that those are in a public place, and they're not streamed on the web.

Maybe we should at least be careful to only film us and the Reddit mob...

I arrived about 7ish, I thought that the places on the teams would be taken by much better quizsters than me, so I was expecting to just prop up the bar and watch. Inside there were over 20 mefites, we seemed to pretty much fill up the whole place. Grangousier was giving out little [+] badges and everyone in the pub seemed to have one. No Redditors were visible - rumour was they were assembling in a nearby pub and then were going to arrive en-masse.

Now and again people were wandering in and looking around, looking for their teammates but wary of approaching an enemy table by mistake. One lone Redditor strolled in, ascertained that we were all Mefites and performed a good-humoured italian chin-flick at us.

We discussed how to form the teams: TheophileEscargot thought all the best quizsters should go in one top team, but we had trouble working out who that would be. I asked who was good at quizzes and everyone held their hands down under the table. Our deliberations were then interrupted when a burger on a plate appeared, a candle was stuck in it, and adrianhon filmed us all singing Happy Birthday to Matt.

It transpired that there was enough of us (about 22?) to make up 3 Metafilter teams and that being a spectator wasn't going to be an option. As I struggled to come to terms with this responsibility, a large group of Redditors arrived.

As I watched them file in, my heart sank. They had the confident air of people who were very good at Pub Quizzes. These were clearly people who knew a lot of trivia.

Their leader, Lowercase_Drawer, came over and introduced himself, and spoke to adrianhon. I didn't really catch what he was saying, but from his poise and deliberateness, it seemed like he was saying the kind of stuff a Bond villain says when they have the upper hand.

Then the quiz-master arrived, all in a rush, and we all got enrolled. We were told we would lose 3 points if she saw any phones out, so we had to switch to radio silence at that point.

I was on team 'Ass-Jittering Cattle' along with Grangousier, HandfulOfDust, Infinite Jest, freya_lamb and Chichibio. Another of the mefi teams was 'Has Favourites', made up of Mr Bad Example, Mrs Bad Example, PercussivePaul, adrianhon, cillit bang and Gordafarin. The third mefi team was 'Jessamyn's Lost Star' - I didn't get all their names but recognised phunniemee, TheophileEscargot and permafrost.

Reddit had two teams: Team Herp and Team Derp. They had some large Reddit Alien printouts that they stuck to the wall. They sat proud, like people who know what the capital of Yemen is. There were also two or three teams strangely un-affiliated with any web site.

Then we did a quiz for a bit.
(Its hard to write that dramatically. You know the sort of thing. Sitting in a huddle, whispering answers to each other)

At half time we swapped papers. When the scores were totted up, Ass-Jittering Cattle were tied in first place with one of the Reddit teams (Herp or Derp? not sure) with 19 out of 21.

Then we did some more quiz for a bit.
(The second half was a bit more dramatic, as we realised the hopes and fears of perhaps a dozen people were temporarily resting upon us. The other members of Ass-Jittering Cattle did brilliant work, and I think my only worthwhile contribution was spotting that a cryptic clue about dinosaurs was referring to contraceptives)

Then we marked and the sheets were handed in. Uncertainty abounded. Was a sling the same as a slingshot? Was the British Raj of India the same as British Rule?

Then the quiz-master (she was from questionone by the way) read out the results in reverse order. The top three teams were to win prizes - some pickles, a bottle of wine, and a £100 bar tab. It was hard to work out the running because no-one really knew who the team names referred to. But it became apparent that Team Herp and Team Derp had not made it into the top three. Mefite team 'Has Favourites' came third and won a very large gherkin each. Some non-internet team won second place. But we knew then that Ass-Jittering Cattle had won!

And the rest is recorded here as living history. We all went and shook hands with the Redditors and they signed one of their posters and presented it to us. We discussed doing it again, with charity donations and maybe with other websites getting involved.

Thanks to phunniemee and Lowercase_Drawer for getting it organised, and adrianhon for the camerawork. And thanks to all the mefite team members. Apologies to those for whom it was their first meetup and I didn't get around to talking to you. Had to head home to feed that cat.

people who know what the capital of Yemen is

Ooooh, Sana'a! *sits proudly*

Was a sling the same as a slingshot?

No, a sling is a piece of rope or leather with a leather pouch in the centre that you whirl around & around, and then let go of one end, causing the missile to fly out at a tangent. A slingshot, also known as a shanghai, is a Y-Shaped object with an elasticated material holding the pouch for the missile. Instead of using centripetal force, it relies on the stored energy in the elastic's tension to fire the missile.

Was the British Raj of India the same as British Rule?

Yes, the Raj was established when QV took direct control of the East India Company after the Mutiny of 1857, turning it from an ostensibly commercial enterprise into a matter of state. Raj is the Hindi term for rule / realm, as in Rajkumar (prince of the realm) or Maharaja (great ruler).

That's a cute cryptic clue. I think it helps make it less obscure if you know that brits often refer to condoms as durexes (I think this is true, right?) much like you might call a pen a biro.

And David most emphatically did not kill goliath with a slingshot. The ancients didn't have any kind of elastic material that could've been used for a slingshot. 100% incorrect. Sling is the only correct answer.

Capsicum quack = doctor pepper.

What the hell kind of trivia is this? It sounds more like a pub version of a cryptic crossword.

a pub version of a cryptic crossword

Jesus Christ, I'm trying to make fewer tagline comments, not more.

Also, congrats to all y'all and cheers to our new Reddit friends.

What an absolutely stellar evening, kicked off by myself and HandfulOfDust finding ourselves first at the pub...after walking there straight from our shared place of work, not knowing that the other was a MeFite. It was like bumping into each other in the Fight Club basement after a hard day at the cubicle farm. She was quite nervous about the whole thing, hoping folks would show and the quiz master wouldn't be terrible, but after we (miraculously!) won, HoD was dancing on the Redditors graves harder than anyone! I can't wait until we get to do the secret MeFi nod at work tomorrow...

Everyone on our team was amazing, but I agree that memebake gets top marks for 'Durex'. And freya_lamb for solving the 5 + 5 + 5 = 550 question! (Can you add one line to balance the equation? It's not the answer everyone thinks it is.)

A rematch is a must. The folks from that other website were all very nice - lots of 'well met'-ting going on - but they should be given a chance to try and snatch the crown.

It will end in tears for them again, of course, but they should be given the chance. Congrats to them for being good sports and worthy foes.

See you at the next one! That means you, UbuRoivas.

As dumb as this sounds, this was really heartwarming. I guess when things look so bleak around the world, two websites getting together for a friendly, good-spirited pub quiz can make me feel all good inside. I'm such a sap.

You and me both. I had this vague sense of trepidation, like somehow one way or another the whole thing was going to go wobbly and turn into A Thing, but mostly I was hopeful that a bunch of mefites and a bunch of redditors would get together and have a fun nerdy time at the pub, and it sounds like that's exactly what did happen and that's pretty great for my faith in humanity.

The math question was hilarious. Being nerds eveyone instantly thought 'oh just make it '=/=' but then thought hmmmm that's too easy, they probably wanted us to do something clever. A minute passed while we were thinking about it and then the quiz master said (in response to some question) 'it is NOT putting a line through the equals sign! no-one's ever said that before, I don't know where you got that idea!'. Then more murmuring followed and she said 'well it's not written here so you can't do it!'.

We were the ones who asked, and her response to us was something along the lines of, "what is that? what does that mean? I've never seen that symbol before in my life." Causing me to steal a page out of reddit's book and respond with this face.

Man that was fun! And on a Monday night too. Hearty backslaps for all mefites in attendance, and high fives to honorable team mates, especially HandfulOfDust for naming the peoples of Monaco, and Grangousier's most excellent tactic of writing rather than shouting the answers. Kudos to Infinite Jest and Chicibio for white men both pretty fly and unable to jump, and memebake's durex is properly legendary. Huzzah!

And the redditors were lovely. I was very taken with their marvellous moustache.

Wow -- I don't know how I missed this post originally, but when it showed up in the sidebar, I'm so glad it did. Like has been mentioned previously, this just fills me with warm feelings all around, such warm feelings that I must make a comment even though I don't have anything really to say (and unlike staff or people who were actually there, my opinion doesn't feel actually... well... important.)

But I think it's a good thing I missed this prior to the actual event. Like going home and watching my high school football team play, I never realized how much I am emotionally invested in a place until their honor is at stake, and if I'd known there was a Metafilter/Reddit contest, I would have been on pins and needles until I heard the results, so thanks.

And also: Congratulations!

I think Mefi was 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th...PercussivePaul
Hmm. That's odd.

I'd love to participate in one of these. I'm pretty good at trivia, except for pop-culture...which is frequently emphasized in trivia contests because it's the one thing that people who aren't otherwise good at trivia are often well-versed in. I guess that's fair. I mean, when I wonder "who the hell cares?" about many times some celebrity has been in rehab, that's probably exactly the other guy's response to a question regarding the largest of Jupiter's moons.

Oh, also, I'm not very adept at those cryptic or otherwise cleverly-disguised trivia questions. That's a major crossword-puzzle–solving skill, right? I suck at crossword puzzles.

Er, maybe I'm not so great at trivia, after all.

Great. Now, if I ever go to a MeFi trivia meet-up and there's enough people there for multiple teams, I'm going to be like that last guy chosen for dodgeball.

Couldn't you also add a line to the top of the equals signs to make it 5 + 5 + 5 (less than or equal to) 550 ? Or are we arguing that just makes it another inequality?
posted by maryr at 3:45 PM on October 13, 2011

An equation, by definition, is when the LH side exactly equals the RH side: An equation is a mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions.

"less than or equal to" may be a true statement, but that doesn't make it an equation.

So, the RSS feed for the sidebar promised a "Dramatic re-enactment of MeFi's pub quiz victory over Reddit."

I expected a made for youtube reenactment of Ass-Jittering Cattle's success, with everyone played by handsome actors, and a voiceover by our hero protagonists, explaining what they felt at that very moment.

I suspect J meant "a dramatic recounting".
