Pony Request: Can we have a google plus sharing button besides twitter and facebook, please.
I remember that conversation, and that is why I waited. I then forgot about it. But yesterday's thread on the Nightmares flickr photostream jogged my memory to ask for this pony.

Also, most of that conversation was about Google Plus in profiles, IIRC. But that is a pony I don't really care about.

I woke up this morning after various bits of sleeping on the couch which included sleeping through entire episodes of Street Fighter II: V and the sky was dark. Why could I see stars after I woke up? That's not supposed to happen.
For reals though, I support adding share and profile stuff. And my cat's head at various points in the night because my foot is apparently the best pillow ever.

box, there's an option in the profile called:
Hide share links?
Give that box (haha) a tick.

You know, I love this place. I feel some conflicted over the idea of pointing people on Facebook here, that it will somehow ruin things. I probably worry too much.
Also, I didn't notice the share buttons until this post.

I think before we'd consider adding another share button from any service, we'd need to feel like that service has reached the same level of ubiquity as Twitter and Facebook. The share links are not universally loved, and we don't want to turn the sidebar into a Nascar car filled with logos from dozens of services, so we went with the Big Two. I think Google Plus is going to need to hit a very high bar on par with these services.
If you find yourself needing to share links frequently on Google Plus you might look around for some tools you could add to your browser. I bet there's a G+ toolbar or bookmarklet that could help.

pb, I get the no share button thing. But we also have a "Mefites are on this social media dealywhatzit" somewhere, if I recall, and could we maybe add Google+ to that?
Because it is so less skeevy than Facebook, and also less crowded than Twitter, so I spend more time on Google+ than anywhere else than Metafilter.

On the subject of Google+. does the +1 button for comments actually do anything? I realize that in some ways it's functionally like favorites are here, but as near as I can tell, I don't have any way of tracking what I've received or what I've given.
I can see what posts I've +1ed in my profile, but that's about it. Anyone come up with a solution to this, or am I just missing something really obvious.

I really wish I could get a video of her chasing that evil ghost cat that lives inside the coffee table. We've got a square one with a plastic (?) middle so you can see what's on the shelf under it. When we actually have the thing clean Vienna will sleep on the table and when she notices her reflection she tries to catch it.
Hasn't worked out yet.

FYI, at least 290 MeFites signed up for G+ initially. A smaller group of us has remained active.
At the beginning of August, the service had around 25 million users. That number has probably climbed to at least 30-35 million by now. A large number of whom have probably rejected facebook for various reasons.
It's never going to be facebook or twitter. Thankfully.

That gave a clear standard for "liking": "like" something if you care enough about it to want to follow the thread. Now, "liking" seems to have no function except to let people know that you "liked" something.

I think you mean the "social apps" bit in profiles – and I was going to respond and say that Google+ is probably already there, but apparently it's not. Weird.

Yeah, I think we can add G+ to the list of "Also On" services now. We haven't added it before because it was in an invitation-only beta. I believe it's open to everyone now. Unfortunately, they don't have friendly URLs, so adding it is going to be a hassle. For example, here's my G+ profile URL:
We'll need people to find their own profile URL and copy that long string of numbers. But what usually happens is people see G+ in the list of services, say to themselves, "I'm Bob there!" and type Bob into the box here. And then the G+ URL doesn't work. We can add the info to the FAQ, but that's still going to happen quite a bit.

I look forward to it being added. That way I can lure more unsuspecting mefites into my circles only to have them discover, too late, that all I ever post is photographs of my pets in stupid hats!

ok, added Google+. You'll need to go to G+, click on the profile icon at the top (circle with the head), copy that number I pointed out from the URL, and paste it in here.

The number of "likes" helps, I think, determine placement in your news feed and other persons' news feeds.
