Is this a self-link? September 6, 2011 6:35 PM   Subscribe

No self-linking, but what about stuff you're tangentially involved with?

I have a MeFi post I'd like to make about an upcoming event- It's history, notable participants etc.

However, this year I'm both volunteering at and am on the marketing team for said event. I have no material stake in it, I'm not the creator, I'm just involved is a kind of secondary capacity.

Would making that post BEFORE the event violate self-link rules? Would making it AFTER the event?

If you're involved in marketing it in anyway that's a screeching-tires situation. If it's neat, someone else might post about it. If no one else posts about it, them's the breaks, almost everything doesn't get ever posted to Metafilter.

"On the marketing team for" implies to me a lot of non-tangential engagement in something.

Or, you know, what jess and cortex said.

I once asked the mods about if it was okay if I made a post that would have included a link to an organization run by a guy I had met once; I had no ongoing involvement in the organization. That was okay. (I never got around to making the post; if I had, it would also have included a link to the sound of screeching peregrines.)

and am on the marketing team

Essentially what that means, or at least give the perception of, is that you want to use Metafilter to market it, to shill for it, soft advertise, etc.

The FAQ, which is up there at the top of your screen, has a very handy link to the Metafilter contact form. It's a great way to get in touch with the mods for questions exactly such as these!

I've asked about several potential FPPs to which I was much more tangentially than your situation -- i.e., a newspaper article by a comedian I've appeared in a multi-comic show with.) The answer to anything I've considered ambiguous is no.

Kind of like I've been told that no one every ruined their life by NOT drinking? No one every cheapened Metafilter by not posting an FPP.

what about posts about people you've met once or twice, but aren't friends with?
posted by Lovecraft In Brooklyn at 10:32 PM on September 6, 2011

what about posts about people you've met once or twice, but aren't friends with?

Our general rule of thumb is "If you have to ask us, it's probably not a good idea." The other general litmus test is what we call the smell test. That is, if people on MeFi knew the degree to which you knew the person involved in the post, would they be likely to call bullshit or not? I'm aware that not everyone has to hive mind modeled in their head to this degree, so here are a few other things we think about.

- is the link so interesting that it would likely wind up here anyhow, or is it just someone posting on a topic they frequently post on?
- is the person being linked to pretty well-known such that everyone knows them a little bit?
- is there any possible angle through which a link to this person could be construed as "doing them a favor" Googlewise?
- is there any angle through which a link to this content seems SEOish and sketch?
- if the person being linked to knew you linked to them on MeFi would they be "hey man, thanks" or would they have no idea who you are?
- are you in the job of promoting things somewhat like this thing?
- are you on a short list of this person's Twitter or facebook friends or do you interact with them on their blog frequently?
- have you worked on other projects with this person even if you haven't worked on this with them?

Generally speaking if we think something is a friendlink we'll usually ask people and exp[ect them to be honest with us. Unless it seems blatantly sketchy, it's not an insta-ban [though it sometimes is] but definitely a "seriously, please do not do this" situation. I know it's a small internet in some ways and it can seem weird to feel that you are prevented from linking to the content of the people/topics that you know best, so we do ask you to try to use your own judgment on this, but err on the side of not linking if you're not feeling sure.
