Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion August 4, 2011 9:31 AM   Subscribe

I'd never seen a deletion actually happen before.

That was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cool! I was reading to the end of a new thread, assuming that it would get deleted for "lousy framing", and then this RED BOX OF DOOM appears at the bottom, announcing "This post was deleted."

I'd never seen a deletion happen in real-time before. Like watching a star go supernova, it was.

It's not exactly giant, but it's something. I haven't been able to actually test this, but you can simulate the red box of death by pasting this in the location bar:
javascript:void($("#newcommentsmsg").css("background-color","#aa0000").css("border","solid white 1px").css("color","#fff").html("This post was deleted.").show())
Or if you want the grey box of death:
javascript:void($("#newcommentsmsg").css("background-color","#333").css("border","solid white 1px").css("color","#fff").html("This post was closed.").show())
Both are laserkittified with the new script. (You may have to remove the old one first before installing the new one, I don't recall if I used a proper namespace.)

The whole point behind closing a post is to head off discussions that are getting heated and nasty, not to give the participants a stage and a spotlight. And you can't just say, "oh, well they were warned, we're not going to moderate that part of the site" as the fights would spill over into other parts of the site, so they'd have to monitor it anyway. This would make the site worse and it would make the moderators' jobs significantly harder, and I can't believe anyone with even a hint of familiarity with how this site works or with the mods' community philosophy could possibly think this would be anything but a huge mistake.

Sometimes posts are deleted because there is a perception the discussion won't go well, as in the "look at these assholes" posts. But isn't it the case that 9 times out of 10 posts are deleted because they are a double? I've never seen a post deleted because of fighting in the thread, does that happen?

At any rate, I was kind of kidding, I was thinking of the secret threads on slashdot back in the day what were pretty much free fires zones.

Yes, this is the party line. Not everybody buys it. Not everybody likes having conversations in which they are participating, or are even just enjoying reading, cut off rudely and arbitrarily for stupid MetaFilter made-up BS reasons. The increasingly aggressive over-"moderation" here is going to make a lot of people decide it's just not worth it to participate.

If you're tired of "stupid MetaFilter made-up BS reasons" maybe you shouldn't be posting and reading MetaFilter. That'd be one way to avoid the "stupid made-up BS reasons".

Or you could just keep complaining about it every time the discussion becomes even remotely related.

One of these courses of action falls under "walking the talk" and "putting one's money where one's mouth is"; the other falls under "big talker" and "all hat, no saddle". Which is which is left as an exercise for the reader.

Why? Are you worried about the disk space they consume? If you don't like them, don't read them. Simple as that.

In my opinion, threads going badly aren't just a drain on the mods, they're a drain on the entire site, and fester ill feelings that spill over into other threads.

What makes you think your notion of what it means for a thread to "go badly" makes any sense to me or anybody else? This whole notion of threads "going badly" is very nebulous and subjective. The notion that they're a "drain" on anything or anybody is just incoherent.

You've never even made an FPP and mostly seem to just hang around being an ass to people.

I dunno. I saw it today and it was okay, but I've kind of been into deletions before they got all Michael Bay.

A Florida fan, a Georgia fan & a Seminole fan are climbing a mountain & arguing about who loves their team the most. The Georgia fan insists that he is the most loyal ''This is for Georgia!'' he yells & jumps off the mountain, Not to be outdone, the Florida fan is next to profess his love for his team. He yells, "This is for the Gators!" and pushes the Seminole fan off the mountain.

I think I just saw a comment get deleted. The fancy "1 new comment" box was there, but I clicked on it and everything below the box sort of shifted up and down, but no comment appeared.
