Hey mods, are some flaggers more notorious than others?

I get the impression that flag-based action is usually in response to volume, so comments that receive a bunch of flags are more likely to be axed than ones that receive a handful. But when you review the flags, can you see who set them? And do you adjust for the fact that some users are more prolific flaggers than others?

I just wonder if there is a group of neighborhood-watch types that flag things so frequently, the mods tend to roll their eyes and not take their flags as seriously as the ones from users that don't pop up in the list as often.

Or, conversely, if some users have a reputation amongst the mods as credible, so when they see flags from them they think "[x] is usually pretty spot-on about these, so I'll definitely check it out."

Obviously I'm not asking for names, I'm just curious if this phenomenon happens.

Data point: One time there was a big derail in some thread or other and I, attempting to be helpful, flagged every deraily comment as such. Then I got a MeMail from Jessamyn who was like (paraphrase) 'Dude are you a moron or something you don't need to flag everything in the world ever.'

So, yeah, they can see who set the flags.

My understanding was that, though they can see who flagged something, they have to go out of their way to do so. So it's not something that happens as a matter of course.

'Dude are you a moron or something you don't need to flag everything in the world ever.'

What I actually said:
Hiya -- once you've flagged a few comments in a thread you can rest assured we'll check it out, promise. Having nine flags on...

actually I just went and checked that thread, what a fucking mess.

You are deputized to help it not get worse. But in the future, we only need a few flags, nine is maybe too many.

xx

Jessamyn
It takes an additional click to see who flagged something, so most of the time we're just going on flags. If we get a bunch of confusing flags or a ton of flags in a row that seem to all be going to the same place, we'll check who did the flagging but most of the time it's not a level of depth to which we plumb.

I always sort of felt the person who starts a thread should have flags with more weight. Sometimes I'll have an AskMe thread and someone will post something that in no way answers my question, so I'll flag it. I always hope it sets off some sort of special alarm at ModHQ, but I know better.

I could see how that sort of thing could get abused though, especially in one of those relationshippy-type questions where people are just looking for answers that support the decision they've already made and they'd just flag everything that told them they needed to DTMFA.

Not when you are the sender, I assume. The issue is if you are the recipient, you might be publishing something the sender wrote under the assumption it was a private communication, and they didn't want it seen by thousands. But if you wrote the message, presumably you can decide for yourself how large an audience you want it to have.

That's totally exactly how I paraphrased it.

Well, no, you paraphrased it such that it seemed like jessamyn called you a moron. Whereas in the actual message, there is no name-calling whatsoever. That's a fairly important difference, I think.

Insofar as it's much better for the asker (or poster on the blue) to flag annoying stuff than get in an in-thread confrontation about it, I totally get you, and I think in many cases it might be going in the right direction. On the other hand, the person responsible for starting the thread is in many cases kind of too close to it emotionally to be super objective about what's going down, and we've definitely seen flags/comments from a poster that were very much off the mark even if produced by understandable frustration or whatever. So, it's a bit of a crapshoot.

It's always totally fine to drop us a line about a thread, and if an asker or poster feels like something is going off the rails in a thread they started that's often the best way for them to go because then we'll know specifically what they're concerned about and can take a look.

Have never gotten a too-many-flags note

We don't have to send too many of them, it's just a thing that seems to happen now and then and I don't think we've ever had to bug the same person twice. It's one of those things that's really not a big deal -- short of doing something malicious like writing a script to flag-bomb threads, you can't really flag in a way that's going to get you in trouble -- but is just enough of a interface annoyance and non-help on our end that we let people know about it if we notice it.

Whoa whoa whoa--I thought reproducing MeMails was strictly verboten.

You are probably joking, but in the spirit of humorless helpfulness let me note that people reproducing *their own words* that they typed into an email is not problematic in the way that reproducing *correspondence written by other people* is.

For the record, it turns out that every flag has to be manually cleared by Team Mod in a process that I can only assume involves arcane machinations, which is why overflagging is annoying.

Yeah, we've technically got a couple methods for clearing out a pile of flags in the case of a huge mess (which has happened maybe once?), but the rest of the time the effort required to get to a "nuke this specific collection of flags" tool and operate it safely is greater than the time required to just click on twelve separate goddam little [x] buttons. It's more like getting something that's been stapled a dozen times than anything; it doesn't take that long in any given case to remove the staples, but you're gonna get a note from us saying "hey, stapling twice is enough, after that just get a binder clip or something instead".

Wait, that's not true. I get them from mathowie all the time. That guy wastes a lot of time congratulating me on my posts. I'd make posts more often but I don't want to bother him.

jessamyn: "Send me your address and I will give you one. You will probably not like it"

I am reminded of a 50's B-grade science fiction movie that scared the ever-living crap out of me as a child called The Twonky. Jessamyn's old computers would undoubtedly have Powerz :)

It might be good for me to see which of my posts or comments were flagged a lot.

Or give me a complex.

Probably the latter. Nevermind.

I'd request one of Jessamyn's evil, meatyputers, but I'm afraid it would breed with the ones I have in the basement. Then it'd be all "Don't feed them after midnight" and me with my "but it's always after midnight, except when it IS midnight" thing all over again.

I kind of knew you didn't have to flag a bunch of comments in a single post, because one would be enough for the mods to see what was going on. But recently there was a thread where about four people seemed to be equally responsible for a single derail topic, and I found I JUST HAD TO flag all of them. I felt too bad singling one out individually because I felt like I was saying "It was his fault!" when actually it wasn't just him. Then I worried all afternoon that I was going to get an email about it.

I think I need to get out more.

Flag Day

Too many florence nightingales
Not enough robin hoods
Too many halos not enough heroes
Coming up with the goods
So you though youd like to change the world
Decided to stage a jumble sale
For the poor, for the poor

Its a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the queen
cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
Its a waste of time if you know what they mean

Too many hands in too many pockets
Not enough hands on hearts
Too many ready to call it a day
Before the day starts

So you thought youd like to see them healed
Got blue peter to stage an appeal
For the poor, for the poor

Its a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the queen
cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
Its a waste of time if you know what they mean

Flag day, flag day, flag day

Does anyone else have instant flag regret? If the issue is minor, I regret it because it's not worth mod time; if it's major, or if it's a FANTASTIC comment, I regret it because I figure it's already gotten enough attention from other people that it's probably not worth me piling on.

Yes, I, too, am in therapy. (I have also just now decided flagging is not for me.)

Meatyputer
Noun: An old computer filled with meat given away as a gift. Verb: To meatput someone is to surprise them with a gift of offal and megabytes. Adj. That was mighty meatyputerish of you. Can be taken as a backhanded complilment.

Not only have I gotten one of these emails, I've played a computer game based on The Twonky.

Also I hand out flags like... something that gets handed out a lot? Anyway about as often ("too much") as I favorite things.

Eideteker writes "Favorites aren't score-keeping? I'm just saying, make the score-keeping private if you're going to have it at all."

I'm in favour of any steps Metafilter takes to reduce score keeping; this sounds like a good step though it'd be wildly unpopular with some users.

gingerest writes "Does anyone else have instant flag regret?"

Only when I flag accidentally. It's not too bad when I just hit the flag link but I quiver with anguish when I accidently invert the sense of the flag. IE: hit derail instead of Fantastic comment and vice versa. I imagine Jessamyn sitting there going "WTF. This comment has 16 Fantastic Comment flags and a single Derail flag. Oh, it's _him_ again."

I'm always late to the party. I never used to flag, but lately I've been flagging stuff here and there that makes me think "Really? THIS belongs on the blue?" So I flag as other and move on. Probably lame, since I'm sure it never makes a difference and by the time I've flagged, it's probably been around for several hours, but at least I got to feel like my point was made without any GRAR or fighty callouts ():-)
