Thanks for making it free to members.
Is there any way it could have been distributed to members without making them sign up
for MagCloud, and read another terms of use agreement, and create another secret
question with a secret damn answer?
I'll admit that it wasn't all that obtrusive, but it wasn't as discrete as I would have liked,
either, and I've already done it, and I'm champing at the bit for the Zardoz article.

Also, any print or web designers out there who want to work on things, hit me up via MefiMail. Creative freedom is the damn of the game, since we can only pay you with distant love.
Print peeps need to be working in Indesign though, at least CS2. They'll do a page or spread and then pick back PDF and packaged files.
Web peeps, each issue can have custom CSS and I think we're trying to be able to do that for each story.
Whee!

I just went back to re-read the original thread where this idea was proposed. On March 6th, 2011. Less than a month from "how about this idea?" to actual printed materials going out the door. That's incredible. Nice work, everybody!
Hmm, I could write an article about what the Infodump is, geared towards people who don't know anything about databases. That would be useful in the event the magazine is getting too interesting and needs to be dulled down a little.

Crap, there's a small problem, where the margins are every so slightly screwed up, cutting off the edges on some pages. If ya'll could hold off on ordering, till we upload a fixed PDF this evening, that would be great.
If you've already ordered and can not cancel or get a refund, let me know, send your mailing details and I'll send out a corrected print copy to you.
My apologies.

As to hosting on a website, please let us do it on the website. Once clipping problem is fixed, I'll upload a PDF to the website and to mag cloud.

Not sure, but I'm betting both. The web version is definitely different from what was sent ad probably going to be used for print.
The corrected PDF should be up some time around 11 EST tonight (long day!).
Again, my apologies.

To prevent confusion (hey I downloaded from this site, why can't I make a submission here or get other issues here), broken links later and we'd like to to be able to track how many are being downloaded, strictly form a curiosity standpoint.
Also note that the copy odinsdream made available had his name on the backcover, which may or may not be a problem.

Crap, there's a small problem...
This reminds me a whole lot of a caving newsletter that I did in the 90's, so I know pretty much exactly how much work you guys have put into this. I was gonna say "call me when you've gone to the offset printers to oversee the cover duotone, (over budget!!) printed address labels, sorted by zip code and dragged 1000 lbs of dead trees to the post office for bulk-mailing," but it looks like digital publishing just has a different set of pains when you're putting out an issue. It was tough on me to get them out every two months, usually typo-laden. Again, this is really impressive. Wish I could offer more than thanks at this point.

I'll be working on more robust submission guidelines and talking with Brandon about a less improvised print schedule in order to make this a bit more sustainable.
Submissions are currently rolling — Brandon and I will be thinking about themes, etc. for future issues. We've got a couple already that are looking pretty sweet.
Some changes:
While I previously asked for stuff that was already published, that was for two reasons: First, so that we could get it quickly without having people say, "Oh, yeah, I meant to write something for that thing," (lower flake factor), and two, so that we didn't scotch any writers' ability to sell first rights.
That led to some confusion, in that people thought this was only for reprints. As you can see from the issue, original stuff is totally sweet. Some snuck in.
The other thing that I wanted to mention: Be aware that we run about 1000 words per page. That means we can accommodate about one 5000-6000 word piece per issue. While I tend to like to read things that are about 1000 words long at a stretch, we could always use smaller pieces to fill holes, particularly around 300 words. They'll run more on a space-available schedule (I'm just basically going to set up a hopper). Just make sure that those 300 words are tight like spanx!
Oh, wanted to mention too: Artwork! Not just photos! But drawings/paintings/etc. so long as we can get a digital image that's at least 300 dpi at 8x10 for the cover, and 4x5 inside.
All of it can still go to metamagfilter YOU KNOW WHAT GOES HERE gmail.com (it took about six seconds after posting the email address last time to get crazy spam).
As for nudity, there are no plans at the moment to include it, but I am probably one of the few MeFites that actually knows all of the USC 2257 requirements.

Magcloud also knocked out all the nifty links and bookmarks I put in the PDF. Everyone's name was linked to their profile, urls went to the web, there were links between jumps, the TOC was linked to appropriate pages.
WTF, nothing in their guidelines says they'll throw out that information. I wants my damn links back!

If you're trying to cancel your Magcloud order, here's how, from tech support:
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 4:21 PM on April 4, 2011
Hi Brandon,If that doesn't work, let me know.
For any orders already submitted, you (or your customers) will need to cancel via Order History (https://www.magcloud.com/account/Orders), but please note that only orders that haven't already been sent for printing can be cancelled. So typically you/they will need to do this as soon as possible after placing an order.

There is nothing I see on that page (or the specific order page, or the item page) that allows one to cancel an order. HP MagCloud's customer service is very personable, and as far as I can tell totally incompetent. I'm emailing them back and forth for more specific instructions. Here's all they've offered me so far:
Unfortunately there is no (easy) way for us to replace the PDF associated with your order with a new one later, so unfortunately you will need to cancel/re-order.
No instructions on how to cancel (oh except for those vague and unworkable ones provided to Brandon) and an implicit admission that they *could* replace the PDF for me but, *sigh*, it's just too hard. Grr.

There is nothing I see on that page (or the specific order page, or the item page) that allows one to cancel an order. HP MagCloud's customer service is very personable, and as far as I can tell totally incompetent. I'm emailing them back and forth for more specific instructions. Here's all they've offered me so far:

I will say this: they're quick.
The answer: They had to manually cancel my order because I'd already downloaded the digital copy. If you ordered early enough to have bought one (or two!) of the pre-fix print editions, but downloaded the digital copy, you'll need to contact customer service and have them manually cancel the order.
You know, I have access to a really good color printer. I'm just going to print out the digital copy. If y'all were getting a cut of the nice print edition I'd plonk down some dough for it, but if it's just going into MagCloud's coffers I'll pass this time.

Was "Midnight" one of 'em? On the contents page? Cause I know y'all know it's "Midnite", cause it's spelled correctly on the article page. It's always important to get all the spelling rite!

Well done. I've printed myself out a little A4 double sided booklet to tote around. After a quick glance through the only thing I'd suggest is to turn off auto-hyphenation, there's an awful lot of them in there and it's a bit jarring. Also I don't think it's necessary to have a 'continued on page…' and 'continued from page…' when it's on a turn page [if you do want to do that though, you missed the one on page 16]. Anyway, congratulations.

You have Leda and the Swan on the wall. She bore Helen, who in other versions is the daughter of Nemesis who personifies the disaster that awaits those suffering from the pride of hubris. The last line of the article by flapjax at midnite which ends above the cartoon is "…"bred and led" Boorman to bring himself low by the sin of hubris."

Yeah Whstler was hired to do up a room for a big American muck for his grand manse in D.C he collected eastern ceramics, and had a taste but the bold, clean lines of Japanese and Korean design. He wanted the great Whistler to provide a room to show off his collection. He went on holiday I think, or overseas to collect more items.
Came back to a bright purple, gold-diipped incandescent peacock explosion of a room that would have Xanadu blush. I've been there, you can't even SEE the ceramics for all the gilt and fabric and silver. The client was upset - Whistler didn't understand - and it causes one of the lawsuits Whistler was always in.
I mean he once sued someone cause he got paid in pounds, not Guineas.

Is it still OK to nominate/send links to MeFites' comments for future issues? (Based on the comments above, it sounds like it is, but I wanted to make sure.)
FishBike: Hmm, I could write an article about what the Infodump is, geared towards people who don't know anything about databases.
FWIW, as someone who knows a tiny fraction about databases, I think an Infodump primer would be pretty interesting. If not in the mag, it could go on the MeFi Wiki Infodump page (or maybe even both places?).

I haven't actually read up on the whole concept and I apologize but it's Friday and I have beer so I am distracted, but: is this a thing made from stuff that Metafilter members have already made, or will make specifically for this publication? Are there more complicated filters, meta or otherwise, in place?
What I mean to say is, if I have some old but splendid and possibly entertaining things that I may have 'published' on one of my far-too-many-websites sometime in the past, that I think might be magazineworthy, can I send 'em in for consideration? Because I'm wearing my secret Metafilter underwear?
I hate and fear rejection, so this is probably just a hypothetical question, but let's pretend it's not.
