Despite the number "38" in this link to the FAQ, it's actually just the fourth question in the list.

There's a link to the FAQ right under the comma in the date at the top left of your screen. You might want to read through that before using the site much further.

LionIndex, respectfully, what? I can get around the site fairly well, and I have no idea what you're seeing.

My upper left looks like this:

Might be browser/preference driven though.

Yeah, it's preference driven. Whoops. FAQ link's still on the upper left of the screen, though.

Yeah, the date is right-aligned in my browser. Also, I usually forget that it's there. Confuse. Thanks!

Is that really a good faith use of the site? Bleh.
I may need to take a self-imposed time-out sooner than I expected.

You know, that's the only tab you'll ever have to pay here just as long as you don't fuck up.

Heya, md30ford, I'm one of the folks that works here. As a couple people have pointed out, how posting requirement worked is addressed in the FAQ; the short of it is that we expect people to hang around for a little while and to make a few comments before they can make a post on to the front page of Metafilter, and to at least hang around a bit before they can first ask a question on Ask Metafilter.
The rationale is that we want new users to have at least a little bit of a sense of the site culture before they jump into the deep end; the time- and comment-based limits provide a gentle check along those lines.
Without knowing more about what exactly you were expecting to do, I can't really give you useful details.
It's basically okay for you to post this question here to Metatalk—it's the part of the site to take questions about the site, definitely—but posting really wasn't necessary since there's no public discussion to really be had. In the future if you've got a question about how the site works, the best thing to do is to write a note to me and the other mods (mathowie and jessamyn) via the contact form, which you can find a link to in the bottom right of every page.
I'm not sure there's anything else to do here, really, so I'm going to go ahead and close this thread. Feel free to write us at the contact form if you've got further questions about any of this.
