Best overlooked comments of 2010 January 6, 2011 11:26 AM Subscribe
Last year, Greg Nog made up a list of tragically overlooked comments from 2009. It was more monkeys than a barrel full of fun, so let's do it again!
There are no rules, but ideally these should be comments that you loved that just didn't get the favorites/attention they deserved.
My list:
The Atlas Shrugged "Get the Hell Out of My Office Game
"First thing you learn is that the dude drives to your house."
"Cathy / Jon Arbuckle slashfic! It was great!"
"I'm becoming more and more convinced [Miss Piggy] is a brilliant creation, far beyond the other (still wonderful) characters on the show."
"One of the most important skills you can have in college."
The mods already forgot Poland!
"The Picturephones went away after about a year."
"That always seemed like an iffy way to do science."
Neptune is too shouty.
"COME ON WE NEED THAT STRESS VACCINE NOW NOW NOW PEOPLE ARE STRESSED OUT THERE"
"Either 58008 or 80085 could read BOOBS, but only 5318008 can read BOOBIES."
"The real Spartans wore heavy armor that was part of their advantage on the field of battle. The movie Spartans..."
"I always thought "Rage Against The Machine" should've been "Rage Against Yer Mom"."
A 16 meter exoskeleton for kids?
digsrus's daring escalator rescue interpreted as perversion.
Eating fresh foods isn't the only thing that connects us to the earth!
"I had a dream that life was exactly like xkcd."
mathowie's review of the Big Lebowski pornody.
"Everyone just sort left their meat-clothes there after they got bored..."
My HS Math Professor's jury selection story, in total."

Thank you all for another year of good advice and great stories. Special love for:
* Miko's advice on constructing gingerbread houses: "There are two ways to make a winning house: the first is precision and cleanness, the second is charming/whimsical detail...."
* fire&wings's awesome rendition of Hank Hill: In praise of propane and propane accessories
* chasles's advice on the best tactical pen money can buy
* stet's sound advice on the wisdom of eating raw eggs
* vaike solved a decades'-long mystery for a fellow MeFite. Coincidence rocks.
* lonefrontranger's memory of cows gone wild made me laugh in sympathy and recognition
* Kangaroo's memory of childhood tolerance made me smile
* jfwlucy on time, time, time
* yeahyeahyeahwhoo, on writing about obscure esoterica
* 1f2frfbf wrote the best guide to face jugs you'll read this year
* availablelight on those left behind
* cashman's pithy analysis of the simplicity of evil
* cortex on avoiding threadshitting: "...leave a thread no worse than you found it."
* mostlymartha on manners
* seanmpuckett on manners: "Act as if everyone around you is carrying a weapon, or has very large dogs, or has nothing to lose, or has a beautiful sibling that you just might like to go out with."
* BitterOldPunk on two of time's frozen places
* forktine on ethical slaughter
* skidknee on finding great jeans
* busybusybusy shuts down the insults
* sideshow's grandmother gleaned coal from the tracks
* scody was able to put a name to a phenomenon I've often wondered about: "Do not adopt a state of what I call "aggressive helplessness" where you expect that all information and tools will automatically be handed to you from the doctors and nurses..."
* alms introduced me to Schopenhauer's 38 Stratagems for winning an argument
* Have a nice day, hon! (and thanks for explaining Charm City's favorite word, Ice Cream Socialist!)
* He (or she) may be Ad Hominem, but it's Granddad's attack on a pine tree that's hilarious
* And finally, to break rules concerning questions and number of favorites...I appreciate everyone's candid and compassionate answers to greenish's question, "Why Do I Think Things Have Feelings?"

"Is there no end to this man's treachery?" I don't know how "overlooked" it is at 58 favorites, but it still makes me laugh and laugh and laugh.
This comment, however, only has 5 measly favorites. When I get around to writing a comprehensive guide to evaluating online sources (ha!) this comment will undoubtedly form it's own entry.
"Calling the dead is an interest of mine." And now it's an interest of mine, too.
OK, that's three and I'm not through November yet.

MonkeyToes, how I wish I could favorite this line from that link: "The funny side of this is me giving an apologetic smile to the sandwich I put back down when I see another I'd prefer." And the next part is great too. I just picture the tree sagging a little, the fallen shoulders of overhearer's defeat.

norm only got two faves for this little bit at the ass end this rather interesting thread about Mick Jagger's FAKE response to Keith Richards recent autobiography. (reveal: the piece was actually written by Bill Wyman, Rolling Stones bassist for decades)
I mean, getting a genuine former Rolling Stone to refer to a MetaFilter thread as, "... a great discussion of the piece and the issues, and so many great lines. the patrick bateman crack hurts! and the overall level of knowledge and debate was incredibly high ..." well, that's pretty darned cool.

I was big on favoriting advice this year (following it, maybe not so much): "If you are trying to carry on multiple one-on-one debates in real time there's a good chance you are teetering on the brink of flipped out and lost it chasm." "One of the most helpful and humbling things you can do in any country is..." "Think about it and then tell us the story." "Now live it."

It's probably strange to connect to this, but I really liked Xurando's description of giving CPR in an emergency. I had over the last year moved to a inpatient hospital floor that has more codes I really identified with his comment. I remember reading it after a particularly rough code on the unit, doing compressions to exhaustion, seeing them on the EKG monitor, then feeling overwhelmed when it's over. I was comforted by what Xurando said.
I'm comforted by a lot of metafilter comments. Sorry to be a downer in what's mostly a funny thread, but that comment is right on the mark in a concise way.

MarchHare : Our pitch was "You'll like Deliverance; it's got Burt Reynolds in it! And Feebles is by the same guy that made The Frighteners, but it's like a Kiwi version of The Muppet Show!"
Greg Nog : Hell of an explosion there, Jim. You use plastique for that, or just some kind of flammable liquid?
Snyder : people are naturally going to think you are a bit evil.
And all from the same thread:
grubi : The more we focus on NUMBERS, the more we lose sight of our original mandate: to terrorize villagers near shorelines and to trample cities.
Horace Rumpole : I told them fifteen years ago that we ought to just buy the kraken,
Eideteker : In this economic climate, I don't think we can afford to lease the kraken again for FY 2010-11. Have you thought about leasing a smaller monster, perhaps a land-based one?

How do people possibly remember this kind of stuff? Are your memories just fundamentally better than mine?
That was my first thought. And then I realized that this may be the excuse I didn't know I was looking for in order to stroll back through my favorited comments.

Instead of compiling a list of favorites, I inaugurated a project to make shorts (via Xtranormal) using any comment I liked, or that resembled a dialog of sorts.
Then I got sick, too sick to follow up on it.
These are all I've got (warning: kind of a self-link, sorry):
Net neutrality, Spaghetti Western style.
Clarifying a difference between left-wing and right-wing transmission of ideas.
If you want an image of the future, imagine reruns of Law & Order, with no commercial break between episodes, forever.

I started favoriting comments in January last year for basically this reason, and I'm enjoying looking up all the things that got me at the right time:
JOKES
Ad hominem: it's still a flash mob if it is planned days in advance and they let the venue know? that sounds like a regular event to me.
mhoye: In fairness, if Bo Diddley had is way, all his songs from all his albums would probably be called "Bo Diddley"
cjorgensen: I disagree with everything Seth Godin says. I'd do this even if he told me I was right for disagreeing with him.
enn: A typical day in the life of Stagger Lee:
ROU_Xenophobe: on the dramatic potential of WW1
GuyZero: a slice of the gross
sexyrobot: A biochemist walks into a pub
ROU_Xenophobe: The best part of Twister.
Metroid Baby: DID YOU KNOW?
dng: One of my greatest fears is being in a well-lit house and...
Damn that Television: Start a MeTa then.
FACTUAL
tel: It's important to remember that all scientific papers are opinion pieces
davejay: I always considered the only important line to be "because everybody hates a tourist"
bookish: Man, that was like a punch to my former-fat-kid heart.
The Whelk: The Cayce Look
Powerful Religious Baby: People seem to think Tao Lin is easy to imitate, just by writing flatly or inserting ironic quotes, but their efforts usually fail, perhaps because they mistake a lack of affect for a lack of emotion.
Threeway Handshake: there are fewer things I enjoy more than French food, but man, just because you're there doesn't mean you have to live up to some fake idea where its pan chocolate with a kir royal every morning
Drastic: I used to defend the Signs monsters, by way of them not being aliens, but demons.
scalefree: now that most users rarely use even a local terminal, it's a joke that's lost its reference point.
keeleyellenmarie: on learning respiration
graventy: I think it's fair to say that Thriller would be a little under ten minutes long if it was made today.
mattbucher: I emailed Ulrich Blumenbach to ask him why DFW wouldn't work with him and if this is typical of the authors he translates. Here's his reply (posted with his permission):
cortex: the thing to do with the hellban concept is to step it up some
idiopath: Leopard slugs, like many of us, get cravings after sex. For leopard slugs, that craving is usually the craving to eat a penis.
ADVICE
Nothing: The teenage years are when you learn the acceptable bounds of social interaction
Faze: "Don't waste my time" is one of the ugliest, most narcissistic statements a human being can make.
gjc Etiquette is about doing things in a way to NOT make others feel bad or uncomfortable. It is not a competition.
Uniformitarianism Now!: I find that in an any given activity there are people who are there mainly because they like the activity, and people who are there because they like feeling superior to other people with regard to that particular activity
mizu: Some paper mache tips that I learned in the line of fire that is art school:
Tarumba: my favourite own question answer
ThatCanadianGirl: and a necessary response
Greg Nog: a v. useful lifehack
tipthepizzaguy: how to literally eat your hat
empath: By definition, Mensa is going to bar 98% of the population, which is going to exclude almost every single person that I've learned something valuable from.
Ashley801: There's a legal concept called adverse possession, where you can gradually acquire ownership of someone else's property without their consent and without paying them for it.
mightygodking: Cascada understand that the purpose of good dance music is to hit you with a brick in the face called "the beat" and then, when you think you've heard everything they can offer, they hit you with another brick.
Sidhedevil: inviting someone to speak
Lacking Subtlety: Everybody here should really shut the fuck up about trivializing "awareness."

Here are a few unsung comments that made me smile in 2010:
everichon revealed an apocalyptic vision in which the unfaithful will be flung like Beanie Babies across Ohio.
And, speaking of the apocalypse, wobh was moved by the notion that if he ever needed to relocate to Minneapolis, Prince might save him from apocalyptic doom.
Cool Papa Bell offered a truism about disagreement.
Muddler's dog's neck got tired during the Long Match.
TEA found hope for the world in a middle school janitorial closet.
hermitosis confessed that he is robustly proud of even his worst posts.
MexicanYenta likened MetaFilter to an enormous family reunion where even the drunks and the drama queens have redeeming qualities. As for the pigheaded idiots, well, they can't help it.
