So how do the mods feel about the user base, really?
I'm very interested in how the moderators see user base from atop their lofty perch at MetaFilter Towers.
Do you love us, or hate us? Do we shit you or do we constantly surprise you (in good ways) with what we do? Do you, as the moderators, feel protective of us if someone from outside The Hive hurts us? Do we make your job better or worse? And other than stopping ourselves from posting inane MeTa threads like this, what can we do to make your lives easier?

Without the user base providing content (FPPs, limks, and comments) there'd be no Metafilter, no page ads, and no moderator jobs.

That's a really big set of questions; the userbase is pretty huge, and nothing ever reduces cleanly to generalities, really.
I know there's some unavoidable aspects of separation with us being mods, but frankly I don't see much of a Metafilter Towers in how I spend time at the site. Maybe more of an Employees Only backroom at the bar we're all hanging out at anyway—I was a user first and am a user still whenever I can manage it—whenever something administrative doesn't need doing, basically.
I wouldn't have stuck around here as a user in the first place if I didn't like the people that make up the metafilter community. I wouldn't have taken the job back in 2007 if I didn't love that community enough to put myself in the line of the sometimes starkly negative feedback folks here can produce at times and that I had seen Matt and Jess deal with over the years up until that offer came.
I'm surprised every day by one thing or another. The size and heterogeneity of the metafilter community means there's always a new-to-me detail in how someone or other writes or thinks or manages their personal approach to the site and other users, always little idiosyncrasies waiting to pop out in a conversation. And the collective breadth and depth of life experience and vocational and avocational insight is just tremendous to have access to and be a part of.
You guys make our job exist. Making that job better or worse is more a matter of specific local events; there's all kinds of different things that folks can do to make our days a little bit worse, but that's mostly a matter of individual bad behavior (some of it willful, some of it accidental, most of it not really malicious in intent in any case), but that's part of what the job entails. This is a site full of humans acting like humans, and humans aren't great at being perfect or perfectly considerate or otherwise convenient, and we go in expecting that and being thankful that it's not worse than it could be (and is, in fact, a whole damned lot better than it might be elsewhere).
Metafilter is a wonderful place. I'm lucky as hell that I work here.

And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides

When you get up to leave the joint, bus your tray. It's a real dick move to leave a disgusting pile of beans and used napkins all strewn about. But then, nobody would come to the site, and so no money would be made, and nobody would get paid.
So who cares if they like us? They need us.
I do believe this gives us some additional pony leverage, if we all get coordinated somehow...

Of all the mods, I've only ever met Jessamyn in person, and that was at the 10-year party last July. I was surprised that she's shorter than me by a little bit. She is gracious and lovely and fun in person, and I trust her decisions without question. She was tired and not used to the crowd and still has this unnameable thing that makes you think, "That's a good person."
I realize I'm sounding like a fangirl. And I kind of am a fangirl, except that I'm also about her age and have children and a household in which I'm the disciplinarian, so I can kind of relate. My household only has 4 people. Jessamyn's household here contains thousands.
As a loving but stern mother, I can kind of relate to the position she's in as the only female mod. My kids are about to be teenagers, and sometimes MeFi seems like a having a shit ton of teenagers when looking from a non-mod perspective.
Asking a mom how she feels about her kids can vary by the second. Especially when they bring home straight A's, so you take them to their favorite Chinese buffet for a celebration dinner, and then you have to remind them to not put their elbows on the table or talk with their mouths full (true story, Monday night). The only reason I didn't have to remind my kids in the booth to not poke each other was that each sat next to a parent. They were still flicking stuff across the table (and then me telling them to knock that off!), and the car ride home was basically an excruciating round of "he/she is touching me!".
The mods must care about us as a group at least a little, or they wouldn't put up with the job or they would let the site turn to crap. Parts of their job must suck, but hopefully, if we're good participants and polite people, that's less likely.
I've been working with university students for 6.5 years in a computer lab. I have every day grumps and happy times. I get students telling me how the printing is messed up when they can't get their prints after following simple directions, but then I get to be someone's angel at least once a day and solve interesting problems as a bonus. It's a pretty good trade-off.
The mods sure aren't turning MeFi into a nanny-state. They enforce the clearly-stated and very fair rules as best as they can. They sure don't whip out the banhammer every day, and I hope something gives them a grin regularly.
Thanks to all of the mods. I hope you have more happy than grumpy moments when doing your job here. (I'm admittedly schmoopy because it's the first week of classes and the lab SUCKS and is AWESOME alternatingly.)
On preview, Effigy 2000's profile isn't disabled. Please don't scare me like that.

I mean it's...they're isn't...it's not Karate. What gets me is the tinge of racism by calling it that. No doubt they want to cash in on the original, but it just seems like someone at some point kind of thought "Awww f*ck it, all those people look the same doing that chop socky stuff. I don't care that it's not Karate, nobody in it is Japanese or there is nothing Japanese associated with it."

Why is it when I read this I get this image of an abusive, manuipulative boyfriend telling this to his girlfriend who has just moved out in order to get her to move back in?

Oh hey look at what showed up when I was asleep!
Just like cortex, I feel like a user first [especially in AskMe] and then a mod sort of secondary. I don't think any of us feel that this is "just a job" in any sense, more like we're happy that we've been given the responsibility to help keep the place we love to hang out awesome.
I'm still waking up, so this may be a little disjointed, but my feeling about online stuff generally and MeFi in specific, is that if there's no IRL-conversion option, to hell with it. MeFi has a high IRL conversion rate, meaning there are options to meet people, swap postcards, learn about new music, stay places, eat food with people, get information I can bring back to my real life, meet library colleagues & get cool library tours, etc. So that's why I like being here in the first place, and being here to watch it grow and suggest ways to improve the way it works makes me happy. My life is richer for having been here all these years.
That said, it's all encompassing. It's hard sometimes to be offline for a day or two and feel like things are going on without you, either that neat stuff is happening, or bad things are happening that need attention and care. So, there's a tethering aspect to it that does sort of make me different from my other smalltown friends. In wintertime it can be tough to remember to go outside, but AskMe suggested some snowshoes for me and I've mostly licked that.
As people probably know, I also have a few other little jobs. I travel and talk about library technology a lot, and I teach "email to old people" in my small town and do a few hours of IT work at the local high school. I've been able to keep at these jobs and do other miscellaneous stuff for low/no pay because I'm well paid and looked after here on MetaFilter. This is a very important part of how my life fits together. MetaFilter helps me help rural libraries and tiny town technology.
And as for people specifically, I've always been somewhat shy and confused by people but I'm a quick study. Meeting lots of people [first on MeFi and especially after moving over to AskMe] has helped me in a lot of ways relate to the real life people I also interact with. I know a ton more "types" of people who open up and talk about how they feel about things [Ask vs Guess culture, a lot of the talks about gender roles, how anxiety and depression feel from the inside, other people with terrible parents] and that all goes into the big databank in my brain and helps me stay alive. Hopefully I can do this for other people in AskMe as well.
So, as to your questions.
> Do you love us, or hate us?
I pretty much love everyone who hasn't specifically made my life difficult in some I-can't-sleep unmanageable way, my co-workers especially.
> Do we shit you or do we constantly surprise you (in good ways) with what we do?
I do not know what "do we shit you" means. Is it Australian?
> Do you, as the moderators, feel protective of us if someone from outside The Hive hurts us?
Yes! It's so weird. I had a boyfriend a long time ago who was a sort of sensitive type, nice guy. We were talking about MetaFilter [a place I believe he introduced me to] and I was just ramping up to working here. And he would say "but those people are such assholes!" and I realized we had a difference of opinion that was probably fairly important.
> Do we make your job better or worse?
You make my job, period. Obviously, sometimes cortex and I vent a little over chat or email "Oh man THIS SHIT AGAIN" but most of the time things are awesome and mathowie could pay me in gift cards and I'd still come to work every day. Stockholm Syndrome maybe, but I like it here.
> And other than stopping ourselves from posting inane MeTa threads like this, what can we do to make your lives easier?
Proofreading! Really though, the more people are kind to each other, the happier I am and the easier my job goes. I know there's a pollyanna aspect to this that is unrealistic but realizing that gratuitously nasty behavior has a ripple effect that creates unease and maybe reigning it in some. I'd also like fewer people to be afraid of interacting here [see previous point] to make FPPs and ask questions, so I've endeavored to try to be encouraging, be a good example, chime in early in posts that could maybe go either way, that sort of thing. The more people that do that, good I think.
But really, not to be all "don't mind me, I'll sit in the dark" about this, but we're here to make your lives easier. As Elsa said, and I linked to in the awesome "what are your favorite comments" thread: I have made some good friends in this place.

Personally, I wouldn't characterize it as fawning. Sincere expressions of appreciation, perhaps? I think it's nice that their efforts are being acknowledged.
The mods do a hard job and put up with a lot of complaints so the average user can enjoy this place in peace. Most other sites this size handle moderation pretty poorly, if they manage to do it at all. They'll either go too far at censoring their users, or take such a light touch that the chaos often drowns out the conversation. It's also nice to have mods that think of themselves as part of the community, and not our parents. As much as I enjoy reading Making Light, for example, "disemvowelling" is such a condescending and childish tactic that it makes my teeth ache.

I read your comment, and then noticed that your profile link was showing up as previously clicked. So I definitely noticed you at some point previous to that comment. Whether or not it was for obnoxiousness, I can't say.
I have similar wonderings sometimes. I think it's because I spend a lot of time reading the site compared to the frequency of my comments. It's sort of weird knowing all these "characters" without them knowing me.

Interestingly, the OED only has cites back to the early 20th C., earliest being a quote from Tropic of Cancer. (They have the word "shit" as excrement going back much, much farther, natch.) Not that that pegs the usage as starting with Henry Miller at all, certainly, but it may not be all that old after all and could thus plausibly be American in origin indeed even if it has become common in other English-speaking regions as well.

Though "bull" as a verb is very much older, and possibly the forerunner of "bullshit", which in turn the parent of the verbed "shit". Interessant.

I think the point to this post was to ask for a Brand New Day for MetaFilter. The site will have to change its name to something else and pretend that Metafilter never existed. The rest of the internet will be all like, "Whoa, what's this new site? Its a lot like MetaFilter but MetaFilter ceased to exist so it can't be them. What an awesome newcomer!" And then, like, we'll be all like, "Dude, we're a new site and we're awesome. Fuck Sara Palin!" And then LGF will be all like, "Dude, you are so actually Metafilter with a different name. We still hate you!" And then everyone will get into a big shouty fight thread on 4chan and Jessamyn and Cortex and Mathowie will cry.

In the first place, that's a shitty, insulting thing to say. But ignoring that: there would be a lot less of what you uncharitably characterize as "fawning" if there were a lot less asshats saying pointlessly aggressive things about the mods, for example that their failure to delete some comment the asshat doesn't like means they're racist/sexist bigots and oppressors. Every time I read shit like that, I try to say something nice about them to balance it out, and I suspect a lot of other people do too.

I don' t pretend to know how the Mods feel about us, but I can pretty much guess, having been on the receiving end of kindnesses from all three of the US-based Mods. (I'm trying not to leave vacapinta out :)
So I can fairly say that I love and appreciate them, and have endeavored to show it in my own small ways.
I hope that doesn't come off as sycophantic, but that's the way it is. We don't spend enough of our time thanking people who do things for us, and Metafilter is a fairly large part of some of our lives- and it's a part I appreciate more and more each day.
Shmoopy.

I got an email once where cortex raised his voice at me and on that very day I gave up all my worldly possessions and vowed to roam the land with nothing but a laptop and some beans in a brown paper bag with straps, offering PC tuneups to vagrants. That's basically just me running ccleaner and turning off the print spooler service because lol, as if a vagrant has access to a printer. You'd be amazed at some of the old versions of MS Works I come across though, and sometimes their desktop picture is the only one they have of their long-lost family, which is sweet at first but after a while I'm like, guy, that's taking up about 10MB of video memory. So I delete it. They're angry at first but as they say, wine heals all wounds. Or is that time? No matter, I have to defrag this bag lady's Amdahl. You're damn right she needs that shopping cart!

This site captures a lot of my attention, but I don't owe it any attention. Individual user's names float into my awareness like the answers in a magic eight ball, then submerge again. If I meet a user in real life, we're more likely than not to become pleasant acquaintances, but quite some several have amazed me by proving to be reliable and just plain good solid friends. From that point onward their user names in print acquire a permanently glowing surround.
