Entering your location (lat/long) in your profile gives a street address in Google Maps when you click on the icon. This seems to be new, and fairly accurate. My guess is that some people do not want others to see this and will want to obfuscate their location.

I live within a half-mile of my profile's stated location, but intentionally made it the middle of the expressway, because, y'know, I don't want you all showing up looking for beer and waffles. You can obfuscate by changing the numbers slightly until you achieve your desired location, or you can use this map to zoom in.

Are you saying that if you enter your exact location into your profile, people may be able to find out your exact location by looking at your profile?

That's what worried me when I was setting up this info, so I put in an approximate lat/long, which is intentionally off by about a mile. I didn't really want a "this is my exact house right here" marker showing up on Google maps, since it'd be awfully easy to find with that.

I would be surprised if other people with similar concerns had not already applied this kind of intentional error to their own lat/long.

However, I am surprised on a regular basis, it seems.

Apparently, I live at Don's Motel. It sounds seedy, but is actually rather clean, and the staff is pleaseant. They do not charge hourly rates, but I cannot hold it against them. I have never found a dead hooker under my bed, nor have I found anything living under my bed, including bed bugs or cockroaches (this is actually somewhat of a negative, as the 7-11 down the street does not serve raw treats). They do not ask any questions of my potentially nefarious activities or my suspicious countenance, or the fact that I only leave the motel after sundown, and return before dawn.

Overall, I like MeFiLiving at Don's Motel.

Oh, I see your point. Google Maps is now doing reverse lookups to address if you feed it a lat and long. And there is no way to tell it you didn't give it an exact address, and it doesn't seem to pay attention to significant digits. Like if you type in "42, -74", it maps it to a house.

Wonder if there is a way to turn it off?

My concern is that some of these locations do not lead the the actual residence. God forbid, if something should happen, and Catherine Willows notices the wrong Google Map location, she may incorrectly assume that some murderous fiend has deliberately planted that location to point out where the body has been buried, and Nick Stoakes has better things to do with his time then dig a hole in the ground.

If one is concerned about being found perhaps one should leave the fields blank? Other have done this with their name and gender and everything else. Kinda like skipping over threads that aren't of interest. Just a thought.

If you want to discuss this further, you can check my profile and come over to my house and we can talk about it over coffee and my amazing view of Killington.

My street changes names 4 times in the span of 5 blocks.

One goes through 3 towns and two counties in the 0.8 miles from the turn off of Route 14 on the way to my house.

Fortunately it costs, like, $16 to take the elevator to my place, so I think I'm safe from unwanted visitors.

Mine points to my usual seat at my favorite bar. It seems like a better way to locate me.

All these funny people and not one has yet claimed to live IN A VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER

Now that you mention it, I am in the woods next to the river. No van, though...my new bike is sorta van-like, though, for a bike.

Well, that's no fun at all!

I've always tended to obscure my identity online. It's a habit I picked up when I was 14 and fascinated with sci/sci-fi chat rooms. a/s/l indeed. The obsfuscation has served me well when I've been in more high-profile situations, with my own amateur stalkers and hate mail and such. Tsk.

I just mapped myself to the closest bar, which is probably where I'll be anyway if someone is looking for me.

Pool party at my place!

Give me a week to move in and get settled, then it's BYOW(affles).

There are quite a few advantages to having at least a city listed in your profile. You show up on on other users nearby lists and if you ask a question in askme people can relate answers to your location. Plus we've done some cool stuff with people's locations in the past, maps and that kind of thing.

I'll chime in on this....

terrapin, I don't want to be anonymous; I just want people from the internets to not come to me uninvited.

I want to participate with the flow of ideas here; I don't want to censor myself out of fear that someone will take offense and decide to show up and school me... or, conversely, decide that since they're in the neighbourhood, they should drop by and tell me how much they like me (yeah, you say...not likely.....but that's happened).

Most of you are fine people. Some are not. Some of the scary people here are probably the callow immature showoffs they seem, but statistically there's a good chance that some really are a bit dangerous.

I am not interested in being controlled by fear imposed on my by a psycho's actions, and I don't feel like I'm being a control freak to want that small layer of obfuscation.

Yeah, the weird thing is that I posted this because someone said "since you'll be in the area, you should stop by my place." I assume the person meant that in a general way, but I clicked on the profile to see how far away it was. And I got an exact address, which I don't think this person knew would happen. Now, this person doesn't know me except through my postings, so what if I really did spontaneously show up on the doorstep after the vague invite? I would sure be creeped out by that.

This thread has brought up an interesting point that caused me to change the co-ordinates in my profile a little bit. Now I apparently reside in Lake Ontario.

I hadn't put my exact lat/long anyway, due to the small, but non-zero probability of Lunatics from the Internettm showing up at my place. Of course, somebody who really wants to could probably figure out my address some other way.

But I don't want something bad intended for me to happen to some stranger across town instead. And that relies on said lunatics actually trying to verify that the marker does indicate my real address, and realizing "ha, suckers, that's not where I am after all."

So now the marker is where quite obviously nobody lives... to protect anonymous strangers from lazy lunatics only.

Has anyone seen my tin foil hat?

But FishBike, won't they just confuse you with bicyclefish anyway?

I'm so disappointed that my lat/long just puts me in another neighborhood. With nicer houses even.

Actually, um, my waffle iron is in the shop (really). Visitors are encouraged to bring waffle-izers, cast iron preferred. I'll take care of the waffle batter and the chicken frying.

It shows me living in the middle of 95. I'm not too worried about anyone finding my house from there as if they tried to navigate the traffic involved, they would probably just give up and cry.

Mine's way off, though I have now found out that I have a street view, and due to construction, can even tell roughly when the car went by!
