double take June 10, 2008 7:02 AM Subscribe
There appears to be a bug on the recent Flickr photos page. I've seen this bug regularly, though not every day. Today's example is a repeated picture by bibliowench on Jun 9th, 2008 and bevedog on Jun 9th, 2008. Both are displayed as "Omeka stickers", both link to the same external Flickr page. I am running firefox on macos. (I don't read MetaTalk much, so I apologize if this is a known bug. I did do a quick search for a posting about the same topic.)
I think Plutor is right. I often see doubles from people who appear to be related in the world outside metafilter.

You're not too bad yourself, sailor.

It happens later on the page, too, for melissa may and sleepy pete, so more confirmation for Plutor's idea.

I think this thread will be more interesting if we assume that all the people with doubled flickr accounts are actually sockpuppets for each other.

It looks like that yes indeed, both instances are from two members (spouses) putting in the exact same flickr account onto their mefi account. So we can add in some code to only put in unique flickr accounts on the all users flickr page, but at the moment it's not any bug on our end of things.

Call me old-fashioned if you will, sir, but marrying one's own sockpuppet is nothing short of perverse.

I'm updating the page now. It'll be blank while it rebuilds. When it's back the duplicates should be gone.

Is there a way, when adding social apps, to verify the account holder? What happens if I try to add two accounts from the same site?

You can add two accounts from the same site, we don't check for that. Social Apps are on the honor system.

OK, 'cause when I added jessamyn's flickr stream just now, it booted my old flickr account (only 1 icon, only her recents displayed below).

oh yeah, Flickr is the exception to the multiple account rule. We have a special field in the db for Flickr NSID (an internal ID translated from a Flickr username), unlike the other social apps.

You don't understand. No one gets me like she does. We started off just as friends, but we liked the same links, the same snarky comments, the same rants. One thing led to another, and here we are. How can something that feels so right be wrong?

MARRIAGE FOR EVERYONE. INCLUDING ROBOTS AND OCTOPODS AND SOCK PUPPETS.
(I'm never going to look at a sock drawer the same way ever again. Oh, nasty, nasty socks all balled up together... so dirty! Ugh!)

I'll start another thread if I have to for this, but I'll try here first. Pony request: can we get an RSS feed of that page?

What? Fuck! What?
Nothing like casually glancing at Metatalk and seeing your own name. Double take indeed.
Yes, my husband and I share the same Flickr account. But you have to be listed as a friend to see our ongoing kama sutra photo-essay.

The great thing about this is I was just thinking about that banal Omeka stickers photo, wondering if I should try and post it somewhere to get the Omeka project a little publicity.
I think we need to start calling each other "sockpuppet," my dear bibliowench.

Speaking of Flickr, I just found out about Flickrvision from the "Pimp my NOC" thread. It's pretty cool.
