Here is an opportunity to mock stupidity! I imagine this is crystal clear to most, but I'm clueless, which probably means leave it alone. But what, in edit mode, do "MefiQuote preferences" and "Contact contribution display preferences" mean and how does one utilize them?
I just ate a bowl of dicks, so perhaps you can suggest something to drink instead?
mathowie, I do have several plugins and greasemonkey scripts installed, but as best as I can tell this is the on the default 'edit' page. I have no problem with one of you guys looking at my page if that helps. Now I have a sudden fear that it's greasmonkey and I need to slink off into the forest for a fortnight.

That's your greasy monkey. "Contract contribution display preferences" is from the Metafilter mark contact contributions script. Not sure what the other one's from, but I suggest a nice Zinfandel.

Fuck. And I've pondered this for months now. why don't we just leave this open and make fun of me? Zinfandel is for wimps.

Yeah, it was updated on Friday, too, so it's extra fresh. Not clear to me what's different, but it apparently utilizes secret sauce, which might be a welcome condiment given that bucket you've got.

The "MefiQuote Preferences" dealie refers to the *drumroll* Mefiquote userscript. I've got it installed, myself. Essentially, the little text box lets you customize how the script formats the quote it creates when you click the "[quote]" link.

Is there anything left for me to explain, or can we continue devolving into html tricks?
As suggested above, yeah, those are added there by the MefiQuote and Mark Contact Contribution" scripts. The former controls the 'quote' button text and the format of the quote itself. The latter controls what it does to each type of contact (color, arbitrary style, the default star-and-house icons, or nothing). It's a feature.
