Do mods and users see MetaFilter differently? May 4, 2008 7:58 PM   Subscribe

What does MetaFilter look like to moderators?

Do you have all kinds of extra buttons and nifty stuff to help you delete or edit lame posts and comments, or do you have to sift through a ton of code and HTML gobbledygook when you have to make those changes? (Screenshots?)

Are there any functions or shortcuts you'd like to see on your end of things to make your lives easier?

we have small edit/delete buttons on stuff and IP addresses, but that's about it.

jessamyn posted a description of what kinds of admin features there are around flagging a while back, including a blurred-for-your-protection view of the admin stuff.
posted by burnmp3s at 8:05 PM on May 4, 2008

The blurred view, with the "two days since a bannin'" panel, REALLY makes me want that panel somewhere publicly visible.

How long since a bannin'?

That number almost never goes above two. Otherwise MeFi looks the same to us as everyone else except we have the admin panel.

I thought it was simply this.

Wow, I bet is was more like weeks or months in the first few years. Are these mostly self linking interlopers?
posted by caddis at 9:17 PM on May 4, 2008

The bans are a mix of self-link/SEO jerks, timeouts (those reset the clock), and self-closures. Two or three days without one of those happening is, yeah, kind of rare as it turns out.
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:18 PM on May 4, 2008

I don't think we've ever seen that number above six? seven? It's mostly SEO jerks with the occasional timeout/ban.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 9:24 PM on May 4, 2008

some of us are just asking for a banning. Did you see what I was wearing? How could I not expect to get banned.

Buy my shit.

Why self closures? Sure it probably doesn't happen as often as the other stuff, but it just doesn't seem to fit.

Eh.

Why self closures? Sure it probably doesn't happen as often as the other stuff, but it just doesn't seem to fit.

No compelling reason; they're a variety of the internal "ban" event, and the days-since counter just keeps track of those. We could make pb do some work to exclude those, but, eh.

posted by cortex (staff) at 10:59 AM on May 5, 2008 [3 favorites]

Well, it was going to go out on the town, have a couple of cocktails, maybe a beer or two, and see what happens, but now I think it's just gonna stay home and mask itself.
posted by dersins at 11:05 AM on May 5, 2008

I think it looks like the lot of you going, "What does it look like to you?" and giving wise-ass answers that approximate the truth. Am I close?

(I've declined to look behind the curtain during the two meetups where I had the chance. mathowie's screen was too small. jessamyn's was too crowded. pb's looked too much like a camera; I was scared. cortex &nbsp doesn't really exist &nbsp &nbsp is a very handsome man.)

cortex doesn't really exist

One of these days I'll get some sort of mobile computing phone device thing with the WAP and the DATA FEEDS and all that. For now, when I got to a meetup, I either haul my big-ass laptop or keep my hands free for more efficient beer drinkin'.

posted by Citizen Premier at 3:27 AM on May 7, 2008

Every once in a while, as a stopgap measure, I'll flag something if I notice it when I'm walking out the door and think it isn't slam-dunk deleteable but still needs mod consideration. This is a habit I picked up from Jessamyn, I think.

Ah yes, the old flag-and-run, yeah I do this sometimes too. While our first view of the flags doesn't show who flagged things, we can look one level deeper and see this. If I know cortex flagged but didn't delete something I'll know it's something he was wavering on. Usually we just email each other about things like that though.

I look forward to us being crochety old moderators, sitting on porch rocking chairs and smoking pipes and telling stories about The Old Internet to young whippersnapper, partly because these stories will include interjections like "Ah, yes, the old flag-and-run..."

If you want to see a good approximation of what that will be like, watch the BBS Documentary, and mentally switch things like FidoNet to MeFiMail and SysOp to mod.

I would like to thank the moderator overlords for keeping the image tag out of MeFi. It was a very good idea on their part, and I'm sure a very hard decision to make or to keep steadfast in the wake of opposing opinion. On occasion, I'm somewhere where the image tag would make it less appealing to explore MeFi. NSFW and all that.

Given the circumstances, it was the best choice they could make, and I really wish people would quit beating that dead horse, when there's so many other better deader horses to beat, like what MeFi looks like on the mods' side of things. That's a question that just never gets old... well, unless you're a mod, I reckon.
