favorite? well...i mean it's not bad.... April 28, 2008 9:02 PM Subscribe
A thought: how about adding a post specific "favorite" tool for the blue (et al). Kind of an open "mark as best answer" for individual fpps.
Perhaps difficult and unwieldy. Perhaps unnecessary. I can foresee problems with the tool without a few well-thought-out safe guards. Still I feel that, when favorite-ing, i'm torn between the tool's double-use: too call others' attention to (that is, to rate) and/or to pick out for future consideration (that is, to bookmark).
For topic posts (regardless of the color of the page) the favorite works fine. A post I want to reread is usually a post I think others might like. For comments, I feel that endorsing a post with a vigorous nod should be different than favorite-ing, but not require a new comment.
How helpful/economic is a comment that reads "right on, psmwantz'rRtheywolf!"?
I've spoken with a mefite or two who've said that the 'favorite' feature was excellent for skimming long discussions for pertinent points. I feel that this use needs a function of its own. As I suggested before, an open-to-all version of the "mark-as-best" function (that is, you may mark as many comments as you like once [and only once]and anymefite can mark in any thread) might do the trick. Thus, I can use my "thumbs up/nod/huzzah" tool to mark what I feel o be an important point in the conversation and my "favorite" tool to mark a post or comment that I want to revisit again and again.
It's possible that I'm missing some major problems which might come with such a tool, but I think it's worth consideration.

Disapprove. The more a website implements inane scoreboards, the more it fails. One day I will write this down with explications as a Law, or perhaps a Rule Of The Internet. (Some research indicates this would need to be at least Rule 104, unless more rules are located. While searching for appropriate numbers, I learned that a cat is fine too.)
I would even posit that Metafilter might be slightly improved if the current "favorites" information was made more obscure.

I posit that would fits better than might, and much is closer to the mark than slightly. However, the current commingling of favorites and bookmarks is a design abomination, and any suggestion to move away from the dual-purpose use possesses intrinsic merit.

Pre-sliced bread goes stale more quickly than an unsliced loaf.
But I'm more likely to opt for the sandwich instead of a microwave hot-pocket or something if the bread is presliced.

Seems overly complex, while assuming that everyone uses favorites the way you do. And can you point to instances where adding the ability to rate posts or comments improved a website? I'm curious...

You didn't get my memo? Concentrate harder, as soon as you pick up my vibrations just once it gets much easier.
The karma system is up and running, everything performing at 350% effectiveness. Average MetaFilter Karma levels are infinite, with the rate of increase in perfection expanding exponentially on the blue and all subsites. Invincibility is projected for early June 2008.
Keep it up, MetaFilter!

Meatbomb said what I was going to say.
If you like a comment, say something nice to the person who posted it, either in-thread or out. If it's good enough to like, take the time to make it a little more reflective than "me too" The world is enriched and MeFi avoids a ranking scheme for another few years.

And you're welcome to think whatever you want. Howevwer, specific vote-up/vote-down behavior in order to create some other change on the way content is displayed on the site is not something we're interested in implementing despite it being a feature desired by some.

I want a feature that would take any MeTa posts about favorites out back and shoot them.

Isn't the undefinable nature of the favorite function the essence of metafilter? Was I so naive all this time?

Nor am I advocating a Digg 2.0 style. I just think it's worth pointing out that somewhere between "no ranking scheme whatsoever" and "Digg-style voting" is actually where MetaFilter favorites land.

Let's find those people and eliminate them before this madness spreads. Sometimes, to ensure the health of the host organism, you have to sacrifice non-essential appendages.

My similar idea was for a SuperFave. Each user gets one and only one. It can be applied to (and removed from) any post or comment, but you only get one for all of MeFi-land. The SuperFave is indicated by a little favicon style icon (like the Best Answer checkmark).

*throws a wadded ball of paper at pineapple's head* No capes!
Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers? Nice man, good with kids. November 15th of '58! All was well, another day saved, when? his cape snagged on a missile fin!
Stratogale! April 23rd, '57! Cape caught in a jet turbine!
Metaman, express elevator! Dynaguy, snag on takeoff! Splashdown, sucked into a vortex!
NO CAPES!
