Thanks to some awesome, loving MeFites February 19, 2008 5:13 PM Subscribe
My heartfelt thanks to loving MeFites: Brandon Blatcher, hadjiboy, Grammar Moses, madamjujujive, vronsky, hortense, It's Raining Florence Henderson, rtha and Hildegarde.
Over the last several months I've been distressed dealing with possible metastases, biopsies, possible upcoming surgeries, finding new doctors, coping with surviving late stage cancer, while living alone and having no family or practically helpful friends near at hand.
These 9 MeFites have been consistently caring, giving, loving, kind, patient, helpful and just sheer amazing. I wanted to publicly thank them, as well as let others know how wonderful they've been, that MetaFilter has certainly been a real community of loving support.
Brandon Blatcher has gently, steadily encouraged me as I faced needing to deal with additional tests and fears about the scariness of managing all this stuff for 3 months now, truly like a loving brother. He has been an extraordinary friend.
A few minutes ago I received a beautiful bouquet of roses from hadjiboy, who lives in Hyderabad, India and 2 round the world telephone calls from him before and after, on the day I had my last biopsy and felt very nervous about the procedure. Grammar Moses, herself a survivor, just sent me a link to a patient advocacy service. hortense sent jade pebbles from the West Coast, a thoughtful touch of Nature to hang onto; madamjujujive spent a dozen hours on the phone with me over several months and sent a cheerful, lovely bouquet of tulips a week ago; Hildegarde has given me reassurances and shared her journey of similar biopsies; rtha has been warmly friendly, IRFH called and offered his intelligent positivity and vronsky has been caring and supportive.
All these people know how profoundly grateful I am to them but I wanted to share this in MetaTalk and say how exceptionally kind these particular MeFites have been.
Listed under "etiquette" as awesome.

Nicky, I was thinking of you today, trying to remember to thank you for something you posted last year that made me see things in a new light. So thank you - you were very helpful to me in a way that is still resonating with me.
Now I will keep thinking of you with a new focus - wishing you the best - and another thank you from me to those that are providing you such beautiful support.

Man:
Just when I was sick of humans in general, you mooks come along and have to be all showing your good sides and stuff.
Oddly enough, picking up my fifth grader kid from after-school band practice today, I grabbed one of the other trumpeters and said "Hey Kev...you need a ride home squirt?"
Two blocks later his mom answered the door, in sweats, looking pale, completely bald, and mouthed the words thank you as I drove off.
Don't know you from Adam NickySkye, but I'll keep a good thought in my heart and a big fat doob for you if and when necessary.

Nicky, I didn't realize either, and I am staggered by the news (I had the big C myself about 10 years ago, and I just found out a few days ago that my dad's facing the possibility as well) -- but more than that, I am staggered by your extraordinary grace and courage and wit (not to mention the reliably smart, fascinating threads and comments you've made in your tenure here). You are truly a muse to me (and plenty of others around these parts), and you have the deepest, warmest good wishes I can possibly muster. This is probably going to sound a bit weird and stalkery, but I was arguing recently with someone who doesn't hang about on the web at all, about how 'real' online interactions are, and used you as Exhibit A for the defense, nickyskye - just showing this person something kindly you said to me on MetaFilter, and explaining how the comment had made me think about some trouble I was having at the time in a new, better way, immediately made them understand that encounters with folk on the web, however fleeting, can have real meaning, are worth something.

The reason Metafilter survives: it's the people.
As I type this, the note below the Live Preview says "Everyone needs a hug." And they do. But none more than nicky and those who have helped her. Hugs to all of you.

Oh YAY happy love fest in MetaTalk!
Thanks so much for the kind, warm and positive things you all said! Been all tenderly teary reading this thread. I want to give a special additional love and thanks shout out to de, dog food sugar (both warm-hearted oncology nurses) and Melissa May.
It was and is my intention to put the spotlight of admiration on Brandon Blatcher, hadjiboy, Grammar Moses, madamjujujive, vronsky, hortense, It's Raining Florence Henderson, rtha and Hildegarde. They have been brave in *consistently* investing their time, effort, gifts, energy and communication with somebody, me, who may cause them to feel loss due to my illness. That kind of generosity takes a particular kind of heart and courage. It's not out of any blood tie, work, financial or offline social connection, which is to say I think their giving has been pure hearted and selfless. This has been profoundly inspiring to me, heartening. It's hard, in my experience, to deal with loss, it brings up ancient grieving. In knowing me, they have coped with both my feelings and their feelings of loss. I admire that in them more than I can express.
How I came to know Brandon Blatcher was in commenting to him by memail after he made an AskMetaFilter post about the practical aspects of somebody who has died. I then went to read his blog, in which he shared about the recent death of his aunt due to cancer.
So while coping with his own significant loss, he reached out to be kind to me, not just in one or two emails but with weekly phone calls, regular email check ups, actually being there in real, practical ways that I could count on. In the real sense of the word, a friend. And I needed that. This is, imo, dazzling. What an unexpected and wonderful gift!
Now, I need to leave for work and cannot reply to all the lovely thoughts.
But I wanted to say also to you jack_mo, that words typed online, in posts, comments, emails do impact offline life, certainly my offline life, just as much as any writing in books, in newspapers, poetry, lyrics or visual art forms like paintings. Why wouldn't they?
If books and newspapers aren't trivialized as meaningful forms of communication, then why would internet communication, which has both the aspects of the written and conversational word, be less meaningful? If anything it has shown itself socially, politically and in every physical way to be as least as meaningful and more than any one of the forms of human communication that has ever existed.
The written word impacts me as much here on Metafilter as the spoken word, either in person or on the phone, or as much as music for that matter. It has astounded me when some people attempt to diminish the significance of comments shared on a group such as this online, as if the words wouldn't or didn't have an offline impact.
How nice of you to say anything I said was helpful to you. Since I've had quite a cyber crush on you for a while, it's delightful to think you liked anything I said (and I say that in a non-stalkery kind of way, lol).
Time to leave for work. Many hugs, thanks and my love.

And mine. The person I was arguing with has never been online (to send an email to friends overseas, she hand-writes a letter and gives it to her husband, who types it up and sends it, then reads the replies he prints out for her!), so all she knows is occasional scare stories that make the papers. It's hard to imagine - especially in this thread! - how some people see the web is some nefarious unreal zone.
Since I've had quite a cyber crush on you for a while, it's delightful to think you liked anything I said (and I say that in a non-stalkery kind of way, lol).

Favorite nickyskye moment: her yelling at me for messing with the local fire ants and their ant mounds; paraphrasing from memory: "How can you destroy the homes of 10,000 sentient beings, they work so hard?!" and then later sent this cool video about ant mounds. How can you not love that?
She has mad Google skillz and will look for and find links on just about anything you mention offhand that strikes her fancy. She is TEH AWESOME.

if i had a dollar for everytime i've said to people there are worse things than death i'd be travelling the world instead of surfing it.
how do we talk to a dying friend, nickyskye? first and foremost we simply don't if he or she doesn't declare his or her hand (first). by disclosing your circumstances to us nickyskye you do us justice. we get to celebrate your life with you.
there's no greater way to depart this life - i imagine - than with friends celebrating a life well lived.
you are very loved, very enjoyed, that's obvious. it's wonderful for me to read in others similar experiences of joy directly attributable to your existence. you have certainly added to life's pleasures - across the globe. you incite goodwill and the return of quonsar.
you have a uniqueness. don't you see nickyskye? it's you who has been consistently caring, giving, loving, kind, patient, helpful and just sheer amazing. it's you who steps forward to be kind. you do not go unnoticed.
it's hardly surprising that you meet your match, at the very least, 9-fold.
revel in you. enjoy!
