Not sure why, but my first post was deleted. It was about the News Corp discussions with Microsoft. Definitely not spam, so I'm not sure what happened.

In the future, you can take this up with the mods directly via the handy contact link at the bottom of every page.

It was a bit doublepost-y. Don't think of its deletion as a strike; it's more of a foul ball. Or some other sort of poorly wrought sports analogy.

Searching for the terms that you'd use as tags for your post (like Yahoo in your case) can help catch doubleposts before making them.

There was a post on a really related topic from Friday and it was a thinnish link to something from the Times Online which we've some trouble with lately (nothing to do with you, but a spammer type who had been working for their promotions company and also linking to them often here) which may have sent up some red flags. Not really a big deal, please feel free to post updates into the open thread.

Heya, JD Rucker. Pretty much what those folks said; when we see multiple posts on more or less the same topic—especially newsy stuff—in the same short period, we'll typically delete the later posts if they aren't really superlative stuff on their own.

Your post came less than two days after this post talking about the MS/Yahoo thing, and your links were newswire/rumory stuff related to that same conversation. It's the kind of thing that often gets called "updatefilter", and while it may be okay on higher-volume sites (digg, et al), that sort of Oh And Another Thing posting doesn't really fly on the front page when it can be added to a recent existing thread as a comment instead.

Deleted posts aren't hidden from access, but they do as you saw disappear from the front page; there are a few different resources for finding deleted posts if you're curious. We try to summarize the reason for a deletion in the deletion reason field directly under the post text, which NotMyselfRightNow quoted above in the link to your post—on the thread itself, that text included a link to the previous post.

We'll also often try to give new users a heads-up about things like deletions, but you caught me with my hands full this morning; apologies for any confusion.

That reminds me. Can someone explain what the hell "doorbell" means?

It's those big glass things on the side of a house. "Ringing" them means jumping through headfirst screaming. (It makes them "ring." Makes sense when you think about it, doesn't it?)

You're welcome.

Also, JD Rucker, you should know that when someone posts to MetaTalk (abbreviated MeTa), people will make fun of them if possible. Usually this is all in good fun, nothing personal -- unless the poster is really being a big jerk or whining too much. But this is an incentive to use the contact form or privately MefiMail a moderator (mathowie, jessamyn or cortex) if you have a question that's really just a question for them. If you post in here, you're opening yourself up for some ribbing.

I saw Flying Buttered Asses on a bill at the Fillmore in '69, with Ultimate Spinach and Moby Grape. My mind was so blown, to this day I can't remember a single thing about that show.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 4:57 PM on February 4, 2008

Man, weren't Flying Buttered Asses great? I thought I was the only one who remembered them. That banned cover was amazing—we used to pass it around the dorm and freak out the freshmen. The replacement cover was hilarious too, with the donkey looking mournfully at the stick of butter. Ah, the sixties!
posted by languagehat at 5:34 PM on February 4, 2008

Yeah, those were the days, man, those were the days... But it started getting a little weird, y'know, when their bass player (Randy Michigan, remember him? Big blonde 'fro?) went and married that donkey from the replacement cover, down in Belize. Course, by then the drummer had already snorted up half of Marin County (which woulda been cool, but, hey, dude, leave some for the rest of us, y'know?) and Ace, the lead singer... aww, shit, man, I don't even wanna talk about that.. I mean, peeing into an electrical socket and screaming "Janis! Janis!" over and over 'til he fried his... oh, man. Oh, maaaaan...

I've noticed that you've been making a news post almost every day for the last few days.Just because they didn't get deleted doesn't mean they are great posts. If you would like to make some truly great posts rather than merely mediocre posts, you might consider The Crunchland Method. Especially this bit:
Avoid "Newsfilter." There are other people on
Metafilter who specialize in reporting the news. Don't be one of them.
If it's important enough news, people will find out about it one way or
another. If they don't, then it's not important.
Also, I would advise slowing down until you get the hang of the place a bit more. There's no need for you to make a new post every day.

Yup. In your profile and on your blog, you mention the whole "one [post] a day" aspect of MeFi in a quasi-mystified way. It's a limit, not a requirement. Could you imagine if there were *thousands* of new posts a day?
