All I want for Xmas is a meetup...with mathowie November 19, 2007 6:58 AM   Subscribe

mathowie and allkindsoftime will be in San Francisco December 15-16. Meetup?

I know we just had one - and I missed it (and the one before, etc.), but mathowie and allkindsoftime noted in the Whistler thread that they'd both be in SF that weekend. So, meetup? I swear I'll actually turn up for this one.

For best results, you'll need to rephrase in the question in the form of an actual plan:

1) Email mathowie and allkindsoftime to see which date works best for them and which parts of the city works best within their transportation constraints;
2) Find (solicit suggestions if necessary) a suitable venue within those constraints, noting that easy BART access tends to draw more East Bay folks like me;
3) And then post a firm plan of time/date/location, by fiat. Spare nothing but rueful "next times" for those who can't make it. Show up early, and cross your fingers and hope that others show.

As the LA crowd demonstrates, anything less is just madness catering to the flakes.

Good luck -- I'll be there if I'm in town that weekend. Haven't made holiday plans yet.

Going to San Francisco for a meetup? Pfft! - that is soooo last weekend, you losers.

Nowadays all the cool kids are hugging their DaShiv photos and rocking gently back and forward in their bedrooms and whimpering "so lonley ... so cold ... so lonely ... so cold".

I'll add that because I am lazy and a creature of habit, I go to the same couple of places for drinks all the time, and am perhaps not the best resource for choosing a place. Sadie's Flying Elephant is great, but not BART-friendly; Zeitgeist is a nightmare on a Friday (if the weather's good); Toronado is both too small (maybe) and not very BART-friendly...etc.

My first thought was the Edinburgh Castle, which is yes, in the Tenderloin, but not a far walk from the Civic Center BART station.

Other suggestions are more than welcome.

Frjtz! Great idea - I've been to the Hayes Valley location, though not in a while.

Ok. Unless there are compelling objections:

Friday, December 14th, at....6:30pm? (does that give folks time to get home from work etc.?) At Frjtz.

posted by trip and a half at 8:05 PM on November 19, 2007

I might just show up. It's been too long since I've seen Matt's meatbeard.

Further - please note for your SF considerations: I've been feeling kind of festive and social - thus I have been considering how to invite MeFites to my crazy-fun communal studio-space for, well, whatever.

It could be as simple as drinks and open DJing on the big sound system, or as complicated as an open jam session or some kind of interactive art project. Also, our dancefloor is killer, and we've got the speakers to shake it and shake it good.

The goods are odd but the odds are good, and it's an all-hours kind of place, which makes (private) afterparties or all-nighters just fine.

If there's anyone interested in something like this - whether for this meetup in particular, or in general - drop me a message or email. Also feel free to do so if you just generally dig electronic/experimental music/art, are curious about it, or are otherwise curious about this "art space" I speak of.

Cool. Ok, I'll doublecheck the calendar to see if there's any conflicts for Friday the 14th on into Saturday. (As far as I know there's nothing scheduled for that day.) I'll post an update when I get an all clear.

Also, if you're interested in the afterparty but don't think you can make it to the meetup itself (like allkindsoftime) then please be sure to email or message me so I can send you directions and/or info. Go on, don't be shy. I don't bite. Much. Hell, I'm getting so old I'm halfway to toothless, anyway.

Directions/info will be available only via email, phone or in person at the meet, and will not be posted within the cast of the google-light, first rule of Fight Club, etc.

This invite also extends beyond the meetup date itself. Contact for an appointment.

posted by wemayfreeze at 2:11 AM on December 12, 2007

Are we going to DDoS the place?

I was wondering the same thing after walking by the new Fitjz location a few nights back. It's kind of a small-to-medium sized place similar to a Just Desserts of the mid to late nineties. The Elbo Room is just a half-block away and might accommodate the spillover, maybe? The upstairs has a DJ and a cover, but the downstairs bar area tends to be pretty chill on weeknights, and up until peak hours on the weekends. It's not my favorite bar ever but it's still near BART and has booths and stuff. Besides that I don't know of many places in the 16th St + Mission area that are both accommodating towards bigish crowds and not already filled with hoi polloi, but I'd be interested to hear about them if they exist.
posted by whir at 2:19 AM on December 12, 2007

I'm about to head east for two weeks (on Wednesday), and I have a well-founded fear that going out tomorrow night, as much fun as it would be, will do exactly the same thing. Which I really, really don't want.

This sucks, but I don't want to get sick again, and even my deeply seated desire to assault hug mathowie is as nothing in the face of my fears.

Photo links - awesome!

The only slightly bummer thing about the meetup was that the table(s) was sooooo long and skinny. Without dedicated shuffling, it was hard to talk to more people than were sitting right next to you. But it was a lot of mefites to cram into one space, anyway, so I don't know what could've solved that.

The IR photos are very cool - they make us all look a little dead, but in a cool way! This one's me - it looks like I'm singing, or something.

Ok. Time to drink some coffee, and then I'll post some photos.

Also, I wish I'd spent more time talking with Lore. But I guess I could wander over to the Million monkeys thread and do so there.

roll truck roll, there's been talk about a meetup during the MacWorld thing in january. It's somewhere in the grey...

by popular demand, the recipe for my ginger cookies:

INGREDIENTS

* 3/4 cup butter (1 1/2 sticks)
* 1 cup packed brown sugar
* 1 egg
* 1/4 cup molasses
* 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons ground ginger
* 2 teaspoons baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger root
* 1/2 cup chopped crystallized ginger

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and molasses. Combine the flour, ground ginger, baking soda, and salt; stir into the molasses mixture using a wooden spoon. Mix in the fresh and crystallized gingers. Cover, and refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Shape dough into 1 inch balls, and place about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet.
3. Bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks.

NOTES
The recipe is from a Silver Palate cookbook. I made the ones last night with blackstrap molasses, and half regular brown sugar and half fancy molasses brown sugar. I also routinely put in more ginger, especially the fresh ginger, than the recipe calls for. It’s ok if you don’t have time to refrigerate the cookie dough – they still turn out fine.

Enjoy!

That was cool. I love this city. Pics here.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and getting most of my shopmates drunk besides.

I have a couple of awards to give out.

ryanrs gets the "First in, Last out" award for sticking it out till dawn when the market opened. He rewarded himself with gorditas.

"Most Reckless" goes to Ambrosia Voyeur for going about barefoot and arguing 4 rather dissatisfied hypernerds at once about the benefits of an American public education.

Honorary membership in "Team Bring It" is awarded to ryanrs and contraption for making the 7-minutes to closing time beer run with me on foot to the local winomart, keeping it going until everyone was well and truly done.

Everyone else give yourself one for suitably impressing my friends with your intelligent and interesting conversation and refined manners. We can probably do this again some time.

I made a few contacts with folks about stuff like the internet radio show we do or otherwise just coming over to work on stuff or revisit when it was less hectic - shoot me a message and remind me.

And thanks to lapolla, Miss Lynnster and tangerine for the little sneaker-net mail and note. That was awesome!

loq, we need to continue that education discussion sometime (like when I'm finally the empress chancellor of a UC). I wasn't saying the system isn't broken, but that it can be modified to match a much more diverse set of learning needs than it currently does, which requires a national level of financial investment, and for some people (example, myself) the current pedagogies are more effective than more anarchic models. Questions of evil acculturation are somewhat separate.

I hope to spend a peaceful week between xmas and New Year's uploading things to my flickr account.

So I bet the "rick" corresponded to the username above/below ORthey's.

ok, team lowkey, now I had to go look up the limerick thread. Now I'm wondering how the hell I missed it the first time, because you're right. It's a great Metafilter moment. I just wasn't paying attention.

Thanks for mentioning it. Thanks too to Lore, obviously, and to everyone else in the thread.

See, I would think a linguist surfer would be more interested in the new word for cool than anxious dogs. How's that for stalking?

I just noticed the limerick thread again because Devils Rancher brought it up for some reason. I was unconscionably proud of my contributions, and loved reading through it again. I think there was an associated MeTa and even a podcast mention about how they intended to sidebar it.

No need to read that thread, the in-crowd already knows that I *am* the new word for cool.
