"...and runs about 70 minutes long."
Yeah, sure, I didn't have anything else I needed to do this week.
It'd probably be a pain in the ass for Matt, who has to edit and post the things, but I'd rather have a ½-hr weekly cast than 60+ min ever 2-3 weeks.

Ok, I'm going to pretend it rendered my HTML entity for "1/2", because Matt and pb have been rolling out a lot of stuff lately, cool or otherwise*, and one really stupid basic simple thing like that isn't worth bringing down the thread this early on.

I didn't see that .9r=1 thread the first time 'round, and am disappointed that it's closed now, because early on in the Judas Priest another-think/thing-coming Lyrical Disputation and mathiness and despite the fact that my undergrad degree was actually in Math and I'm all about the wordplay, I got the idea to drop the totally awesome snarky pun about mental masturbation and 'another dink-thumbing' but I couldn't do it so now I'm sad.

Meeefite is correct, but it works better in the Tom Waits song parody to say MehFite

Meefite?
I've always pronounced it like "may-fight" (of course that depends on how you pronounce those words in your accent as well)
Perhaps the next podcast can consist entirely of mefites calling in and trying to pronounce the word. It would be very pomo.

The MeFite may fight, but in the end it's just a meh-fight.

You know, I started out saying meeefiiii, but then when I heard cortex say it meffy I switched to that. It just sounds better, rolls off the tongue so smooth.

On the thing/think deal, sometime after that thread I stumbled upon an Alan Watts talk where he explains that a thing actually is a think, "a thing is a think - a unit of thought". Well I found it amusing anyway. It's a cool talk too, worth listening to.

Me too; when they're an hour or more long I find it almost impossible to pay attention. Also, more than two people talking is a great improvement.

You're easily satisfied. Matt may have started the site, but he doesn't control pronunciation. Like philomathoholic said, it's got to be meffy:

Not you too languagehat, nooooooooooooooooo!
Damn, you could probably cite 500 year old english language precedent for why is really should be meffy.

Weird, because even though I call it Mee Fi, I have always pronounced (in my head) the full name May-ta Filter.
For example:
theta...
beta...
meta...?

The vowel i after the single consonant f effects the previous vowel e, making it long. So that's Me. The Fi is ambiguous on its own, but as part of Fite, it is subject to the same rule. Hence, Fi, as in φ.
(Just don't tell the Iraqis.)
Anyway.
So, Tubesock: Worth the $15?

horsemuth: It's not a Greek letter, it's a prefix. Do you say "may-ta-physics"? "May-ta-phor"?

Ahhh, good answer. Your examples stuck instantly and the voice in my head now says it properly - though, I'm paranoid that I will now accidentally say metaphor incorrectly.

Hey, that's my Mythbusters costume! Apologies for the broken link; crapflooding comment spammers have knocked my effing site off the Internet this week. I've managed to put up a holding page, but the archives are still hosed. HOWEVER - I did have a copy of our costume photo in my email, and I've uploaded that to my new host. It's here.
