AskMe is quickly turning into my favorite food resource of all time. It's a vast treasure trove of practical, easy to make recipes and good food-related advice shared by regular folks, not food writers or even, necessarily, hardcore foodies. Can we have a thread consolidating the favorite/most useful recipes and advice AskMe has produced?

I'm still working my way through this thread and some of the eye-rollingly yummy gems contained within.

This is something that would be a great collaborative MeFi wiki project, though if people put some fave threads here we can bring them over there.

Every time we do a podcast, we look at the most popular page and there's always a great cooking one at the top. We've been making jokes about it in the last two podcasts, how the top of the charts is always a great cooking tips post.

(maybe what I said was not clear. To be dully literal: I'm tired of complaints about "favorite whoring". If favorite whoring means good posts, then it's a good thing. If it means lame posts, then it will bring its own punishment of people making fun of the quality of the post. But whether someone wants favorites is irrelevant, and accusing them of "watering down" the supposed value of favorites is just counterproductive since it feeds into a focus on favorites. Which aren't worth focusing on, either as a thing to get or as a thing to be "judicious" about "awarding". Ugh. Who gives a damn about favorites.)

I agree, there should be some kind of recipefilter thing on here. There's obviously interest... that lushy cupcake fpp I did was by far the most favorited thing I've ever posted. Although on second thought, that might not be because people like baking cupcakes, but rather because they enjoy partaking of alcohol. Lushes!

I'm an avid cook but I had never heard of velveting chicken until this answer to one of my questions. It's an absolutely fantastic technique, and seems almost magical in the way it changes the texture of protein.

The MeFiComp CD issue had more to do with the volume discount we got for making more CDs than we might have made normally. We could take that into account if we made a cookbook -- or Lulu it or whatver -- and I like the fact that recipes aren't really an area where copyright is vigorously defended (what's the copyright deal with recipes again?).

dersins, as right as you were, your subtle use of the subjunctive completely nullifies the OMG CRAZEE you were looking for with your allcaps retort. Please try harder with your lowbrow sarcasm next time.

I think you have to alter the original recipe in some substantial way if it's been published before. I think it's technically ok if you describe the process in your own words and have altered the technique/ingredients to make something new; however, I notice some authors are now choosing to give credit to their original sources more carefully, even though they've changed the recipe. It always strikes me as a good gesture. I think there is a fuzzy middle ground, and I'm not sure how it relates to things like royalties though. I don't remember where I was reading about copyright issues. There was a specific example, I think.

I have seriously thought about doing this, as a matter of fact, I half-heartedly mentioned it recently over at Metachat. No takers, though. I would love to do a food-based meet-up, where we all brought our favorite dishes found on one of the metas. It would be mangiare-meta! Oba!

I was wrong about altering the ingredients. It seems you just need to describe the process in your own words. Barbara Fisher wrote two posts on the subject on Tigers & Strawberries. This is what I was half-remembering (from first link):

"Recipes are not completely covered in US copyright law. According to the law, one cannot copyright a list of ingredients; the only place where copyright comes into play in a recipe is in the way in which the author writes the methodology–the “how to” part of the recipe."

And she refers to a Washington Post article.
